Phenomenal... i’ve been eagerly awaiting the sequel to the line between Tosca Lee. I absolutely loved this apocalyptic thriller. When cult escapee Wynter Roth and ex-Marine Chase Miller emerge from their bunker months after the country is overtaken by a killer disease, they find themselves on the run. They are desperately searching for antibiotics that are in short supply as well as food, fuel, and help. As more lies are uncovered, and truths come out before they even leave the bunker, the question is can they survive and work together for the greater good?
I loved the real life desperation I believe you would see if this story became a reality. The desperation. The loss of hope. The lawlessness. Then...the reemergence if the good. The hope slowly being restored. I’m in love with this book, but hope we don’t see this become reality. Yes, it feels that real!
If you love apocalyptic thriller’s with a dash of romance and strong male and female lead characters, you will love The Line Between and the second book, A Single Light! I’m desperately hopeful they will make a movie that lives up to the book.
I was given an advanced reader copy through NetGalley by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Five stars. This series just has everything I need: action, great characters, a dash a romance, immersive writing. It's hard not to be engaged with what's happening: my heart raced, my eyes teared up, I was happy in joyful moments- this entire series is just *that good*.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tosca Lee and Howard Books for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review.
Six months after being locked in a silo for their own protection, Wynter and Chase with many other emerge to find the place abandoned. There is no sign of Noah or the rest of the group that was supposed to meet them the day the silo opened. She was counting on them to meet her and help her find the antibiotics she needs to keep her friend Julie alive. Wynter and Chase go on a desperate hunt for the antibiotics and answers to what is going on in the world. Everything seems worse, not better like they had anticipated. They come face to face with a radical group that will do anything to survive. Wynter is called upon once again to save a place that she no longer recognizes.
This novel begins right where the first one left off so it was really quick to get back into, but you definitely couldn’t start reading the series out of order. I again loved the amount of action that Lee has fit into this novel and how you are sitting rooting for the same characters to pull through. I felt more emotions in this novel as we lose people that we care about and I found I was blindsided often by the many twists and turns that this novel took me on. I loved the quick pace of the novel and all the new characters that we meet and fall in love with. I enjoyed this new world and how different it was from what I thought was going to happen. Overall, I rushed right through this book to see what happened and I was not disappointed!
Out September 17th!
Bravo, Tosca Lee! Just when I was thinking the sequel of The Line Between couldn’t possibly live up to my high expectations, she proved me wrong, knocking it out of the park with A Single Light! The story was a nonstop emotional thrill ride that kept me up at night with no regrets, as I couldn’t stand to put it down. Tosca is a master at character development and dialogue as she proves once again in this story of loyalty, bravery, and love in unfathomably challenging circumstances. I heartily recommend this riveting book to anyone who enjoys thrillers or dystopian stories. Thank you, NetGalley, for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
WOW. I'd been intrigued by the premise of this series (I'm a sucker for a great post-apocalyptic novel), and I was pleasantly surprised. Even though I haven't read book 1 yet (trust me, I WILL be reading it!), I found A SINGLE LIGHT to be paced like a train...it started out chugging along steadily, but by halfway through, it was barreling down the express tracks, and I had to stay up late into the night to see how it ended. The first person point of view is perfect for this novel and flawlessly executed, pulling me straight into the bold but conflicted main character's head. This book shot to the top of my best reads of 2019 list and I know I'll be recommending it often. Solid, hopeful moral tone, but I would call this a mainstream read versus strictly Christian fiction.
The one thought running through my head as this story unwound was that Tosca Lee is definitely a gifted storyteller. Looking forward to reading more of these books and I'm hoping there's another in this series.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and chose to review of my own accord.*
I feel like I waited forever for A Single Light!! Immediately after finishing The Line Between I was curious to see what would happen to Wynter and the rest of the world after spending six months in an underground bunker while the world above is destroyed by disease!
Once again Tosca Lee has created a book that has everything I want; real-life horror mixed in with a dystopian thriller that has cults, a bit of romance and nonstop action!
"The end of the world. When everything dies after all the good is gone. So it can start over pure.
I'd thought it a terrible, deranged thing to say. But now I finally understand"
Wynter is so hopeful that things will improve that it was almost painful to read about things not going according to plan! However, she remains an absolute badass and only puppy-dog eyes Chase a little bit as she seeks out medicine and supplies her friends and selected family need to survive.
I really really wanted to try and read this book closer to its release date (September 17th!) but once I started reading it I COULD NOT STOP! The writing is wonderfully detailed, the plot is riveting and the story is fascinating and scary! I can not wait for the next book in this series because I need more!!!!
If you haven't read The Line Between go do that now and then take a day off because you'll want to keep reading!
Tosca Lee’s book A Single Light is the perfect sequel to The Line Between. Once you start A Single Light it is impossible to put it down. The Line Between was a great fast paced thriller but A Single Light is even better. It is a must read book and I will definitely be reading it again.
This sequel to The Line Between was thrilling to read and very hard to put down. There were so many twists and turns that I did not see coming. Very well done, making it an exciting adventure. There is action, despair, love, loss, deceit, fear of the unknown, determination, sacrifice, fierce bravery and the strong will to survive. This story feels so real, deep in your gut. This is what it looks like when people are struggling to survive with limited resources. The characters are beautifully written and so easy to connect with. I didn’t want to leave them. I didn’t want to close that last page. Another exciting and wonderfully written story by Tosca Lee!
Thank you to NetGalley, Howard Books and Tosca Lee for my advanced digital copy of A Single Light. I loved it so much that I had to preorder my very own hardcover copy!
This is how you tell a story. The pages just flew by. Tosca Lee is a born storyteller. Let the adventure continue.
Well written. It makes you suspend what should be the reality. The story line drug a bit in the middle but it was not uninteresting. It seemed a bit rushed at the end.
I received a free ARC for on honest review from Net Galley.
OMGoodness!!! Where do I even start?? The Line Between was amazing, and yet A Single Light by Tosca Lee (the sequel) has managed to shoot right past that one. Wynter, Chase, and Truly are in the Ark, awaiting opening day. Everything you can imagine stress wise when you have 60+ people locked in a silo, happens, and more. Wynter is still learning to trust, and wondering if there is even a possibility of a "happy ending". The emotion and drama that she feels and experiences are so realistic and relatable to. You want to reach out and save her. Can Chase? Can anyone? Only God can, but can she learn to trust Him? I will definitely be purchasing my own copy of this book when it comes out.
Keep up the amazing work Tosca!! If you haven't read any of her books, you so need to do it.
This book starts right where The Line Between ends. The things that I wondered about that book where answered in this book and more. If you liked the first book, you’ll love this one.
This is an exciting book that hooked me from the first page. The type you are eager to finish, but don’t want to end. In the last book, we learned about a pandemic that started with an Alaskan pig farmer. This book deals with the consequences of that disaster. This is a thriller with many unexpected twists and turns.
As I stated with The Line Between last year, this is definitely my favorite book that I’ve read this year.
Either by a stroke of luck, in which I don’t believe, or because of persistent begging, I happily received a galley of Tosca Lee’s newest novel.
A Single Light, the sequel to The Line Between, was a welcome addition to my reading list. I tried to pace myself but still devoured it in three days.
I admit I was excited to read it as I completely enjoyed the characters and plot development in The Line Between. Tosca is a great story teller.
I was not disappointed with the sequel in the least.
As much more a reader than a line editor I focus on the flow and connectivity of the story, scenes, and how they come to rest at the end of the tale.
If a story grabs me I cease seeing the punctuation. I fall in and swim with the current. A Single Light had some calm eddies and some Class 5 white water so you won’t get bored. Just try and hold your breath!
I again saw one of the reasons I enjoy Lee’s writing so much. As with her other solo works, there is a gravity about her writing that pulls readers in and along with it. A Single Light is no different.
There is an eloquence of purpose in Tosca Lee’s words.
Each scene, each bit of dialogue, each character interaction seems like it’s going somewhere. I don’t know how much this is due to her skill in the writing craft or if she simply has a knack for it. Words are not wasted.
The characters are solid with a sampling of just about every type of personality out there. Some old, some new, and some...well, it seems Tosca is not afraid to kill off some really good characters. But in an apocalypse good people gotta die right?
Once again Tosca Lee has written a super enjoyable, well thought out thriller. There is only one recurring issue I have with her books. They end.
I definitely encourage readers to get A Single Light, ASAP. Wynter is coming again!
This series is Hauntingly Beautiful.
The second book in The Line Between series picks up right where the first one left off, right dab in the middle of a Silo. I felt the emotions of each character as I read through their heroistic selfless journey. I laughed, cried, screamed and wanted to throw my kindle across the room for what Tosca was putting me through. (don’t worry its gets resolved… mostly) Tosca Lee weaves a tale so marvelous it leaves me aching for more. (I need a epilogue) A Single Light will give you tears, love, hope, a little bit of anger and ready for the next adventure.
End of the World thrillers are interesting. They take on a what-if scenario and run with it. As for Tosca Lee with her The Line Between and A Single Light, Lee crafts a world that begins with a cult escape and turns into a vaccine that is needed to save the world from early dementia. I highly recommend reading these two novels in order or the second novel really won't make much sense. I even went back and re-read the first one before diving into the second one because I read so many books in between that I couldn't remember much of the first one. Boy, am I glad that I did. As for the plot of A Single Light, it moves quite rapidly. I recommend sitting aside an entire day with no interruptions, which I know is practically impossible. Lee is wonderful at ending each chapter on a cliffhanger, so of course, I wanted to keep reading and find out what happened. This story had so many twists and turns that I loved it. The plot is fast paced and had me flipping through the pages. The characters of Wynter and Chase are fabulous. I love how quickly Wynter fit into the world she escaped to and how much she did to save others. She has a heart to save not only her niece but anyone she comes in contact with. Chase, the hero, is an ex-Marine who does anything for Wynter, even love her when she doesn't want to be loved. Tosca Lee crafted a wonderful end of the world thriller that kept me glued to the page. If this is the last one, then I'm sad to see these characters go, I would love to see what happens next. How do they actually rebuild the world? Fans of The Hunger Games might enjoy this novel. I sure did.
I received a complimentary copy of A Single Light by Tosca Lee from Howard Books, but the opinions stated are all my own.
This is a great fast-paced dystopian novel featuring the main character Wynter from the previous book The Line Between. It's a very good sequel that takes off from book 1 in what might turn into a series. The world has only gotten worse, due to the Alzeheimer virus spreading, and Wynter with her sister's child Truly and partner Chase— acquired en route to this safe silo enclave mentioned at the end of book 1. Life inside parallels her years in the cult and as with any group of people forced to live together in insolation, the silo proves to be no heaven on earth. Wynter and Chase are forced to go back out into the world to hunt for needed medicine. What they find is a world gone mad, with shades of The Walking Dead, although there are no supernaturals in this book. The story is full of exciting action-packed scenes where the reader can only hold his or her breath, hoping Wynter survives and the medication can be found, if not the actual cure for the virus. The story is bleak but not unduly given the state of humanity. Definitely worth a read and likely headed for best-seller status.
Okay...okay... okay...
This duology is absolute genius gold!
I loooovvveeeeeeee Wynter Roth who is deep down such a strong bad A$$ young woman; who not only had dealt with oppression through her religion, but learns to live on the outside of her cult in a big adventurous way.
She also deals with some mental issues ( who wouldnt ) caused by her time in the cult.
I cannot give you much about what happens in this book because I do not want to ruin the first in the duology.
Here is the deal, If you have ever read a book in one day because it flows so well and you have the " just one more chapter" and I'll adult" thought.... but forgo adulting because you must know what happens next? This is your next read. 😘👍
So happy I preordered this book prior to release date of 9.17.19!!
I recieved this ARC via netgalley for an honest review. Which I wholeheartedly give freely!
Intense. Tosca starts out by letting us in on the happenings inside the bunker. When Noah’s daily messages stop coming the people are left wondering what is going on outside the silo and what will the world be like when the door finally opens? Tosca captured my attention right away with the mystery and suspense. The added deadline of finding medicine for the injured character before they died magnified the urgency and kept the pages flipping.
The finding of the medicine occupied most of the book which surprised me a little. I thought there would be more focus on the terrorism aspect and the drama of creating the vaccine. Its hard to know which would have been more exciting. However I recognize that in order to do that we would not have been able to keep the seamless singular POV through Wynter so it makes more sense as is.
I loved the chase and the action and that Tosca wasn’t afraid to kill off her characters. It illicits more emotion and engagement with the story and the outcome.
I liked seeing Wynter escaping the isolation of the Enclave just to enter into the isolation of the silo and how we got to see her character grow through her different captivities.
One thing I wished would have been handled differently was the answer to the security footage tape showing Noah and the others leaving the farm. We got the answer later but it was obscure and didn’t fit the tone of the tape. It was basically a side note instead of the ominous and important role it first appeared to have.
Also, a tiny annoyance was how a lot of the sentences started without a subject, i.e. statements starting with ‘can’ and ‘am’ etc. just felt disjointed reading those in my head, I almost always caught myself rereading them to see if I missed something.
All that to say, another great Tosca Lee book and was a satisfying sequel to The Line Between!
Bonus shoutout for Kearney and Runza and Des Moines!
** I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **
Wynter and Chase are in Noah's Ark, an underground shelter/community closed for 6 months when they are set to re-enter the world. Communications with Noah have ceased so the community has no idea what is happening out in the world. Hopefully the ability to make an antibiotic for the disease ravishing the United States has had time to be distributed by the time they come out from the Ark. Unfortunately what they find when they leave the Ark is not what they expected. No antibiotics and chaos reigning. Chase and Wynter must risk their lives to save the people they love the most while time seems to be running out.
Such a wild ride! It is hard to imagine our world with no electricity, no law, no food and everyone living for themselves. Each step of Wynter and Chase's journey is intense and filled with danger. It keeps the reader turning the pages quickly to find out the outcome of characters that you've been routing for throughout the story. Wynter frustrated me a few times when she acted recklessly, but it fit with the story of desperation and what a person will do to survive or keep the ones they love alive. A fantastic, fast-paced read that I highly recommend if you love a good thriller/dystopian type story.
In this sequel to Lee's The Line Between, we find Wynter and those she cares about - her niece Truly, surrogate mom Julie and her daughter Lauren, and ex-soldier Chase - securely locked away in an underground silo. Only Wynter and those closest to her know that specialists are working on a vaccine for the dementia-like disease that was ravaging the country. And almost no one knows that Dr. Ashley Neal, a professor at Colorado State (and Truly's real father) had managed to create two doses of the vaccine - one for Wynter and one for Truly - before being whisked away to a research lab to continue working. Before the handful of strangers entered the silo, the electrical grid had gone down, cell phones had stopped working and violence was becoming the norm in most cities. They are counting down the days until what has become known as "Open Day" - the day that the locked silo door will open and they will reemerge to a world that, hopefully, is finally free of the disease. But when the lock disengages two days early, Chase and Wynter emerge to discover that the country is in total chaos and there is no vaccine. Worse yet, a slip and fall in the silo kitchen left Julie badly hurt and battling an infection. Without the right IV antibiotics, she won't make it. The problem is most medical facilities have already been ransacked and all the medical supplies have been stolen. Can Chase and Wynter find the meds Julie needs in time? And what happened to Dr. Neal? Why aren't the vaccines ready? They are racing against time to find the meds Julie needs and the answers they seek.
With chapter headings that indicate either how many days the crew has been in the silo or the time on the clock as Wynter and Chase race to save Julie's life, this one will captivate the reader almost from the first word. The crew living in the silo is functioning like a well-ordered community. Until the daily video feeds from Noah, the founder of their little community, stop coming. With no communication from the outside, no updates on the state of the country, and no way of knowing if anyone is even still left alive on the surface, it doesn't take long for panic and fear to infiltrate the silo. Panic and fear lead to wild accusations and violence and life in the silo, already a challenge for them all, becomes a serious struggle. When Wynter finds out that Chase wasn't exactly who she thought, she sees the future she had dreamed of slipping away forever. And then Julie gets hurt. and her wound gets infected. As frightened as they all are when the door to the silo unlocks two days early, Wynter knows the "early release" may be the only hope she has of saving Julie's life.
This one had me on the edge of my seat from the start. The chapter headings - the number of days they had been in the silo or the hour on the clock once they are out - add to a sense of urgency in everything that Wynter and Chase are doing. The country is in chaos, the pandemic has spread to South America and parts of Europe and there is no sign of the vaccine that Wynter knows Dr. Neal is capable of making. Can she get the IV antibiotics back to the silo in time? Will she and Chase survive to get back at all? Fans of The Line Between will find much to love in this highly anticipated sequel (even if it does take a minute for your heart rate to return to normal once you're done!)
