Even though this is the 11th book in this series, I enjoyed this one just as much as the previous ones. I dropped everything to read this book and I was not disappointed.
This latest installment features Chief of Police Kate Burkholder and the action kicks off right at the start of the book with the vicious murder of a grandmother in Amish country Ohio. Not only does Kate need to deal with the murder, but the 7-year-old granddaughter with special needs was kidnapped.
Vintage Linda Castillo style -- Kate faces one dangerous situation after another in the quest to find the missing girl and the murderer. She dives back into the Amish community to try to unravel deep secrets. This one is fast-paced and kept me turning the pages, with some tense scenes and violence. I love the Amish connection in this series and the sense that it is so hard to leave your upbringing behind.
My only request is some relationship happiness for Chief Burkholder, she needs a romantic vacation. I guess that might be boring to some though!
*I will update my Goodreads review during publication week
Linda Castillo continues to wow readers with her Amish mystery thrillers! She weaves a perfect tale, giving out tidbits of information along the way to solving complex crimes. Readers will find this book hard to put down as this story leads the law enforcement through southern Ohio to Northern Kentucky. Chief Burkholder is a force to reckon with as she and her team search for a missing child and murderer. Highly recommended!
Castillo once again offers us an Amish mystery set in Ohio. This one varies just a bit from other works by this author: Castillo does not tie up all the loose ends and leaves the reader with some questions. Also, The Shamed is more 'professional' than some of her other books. Not a lot of information about Kate's personal life with Tomasetti is in this one but he makes an appearance and helps with the investigation.
Kate is investigating a murder-kidnapping and the trail takes her to other parts of the state and even across the Ohio River to northern Kentucky where she learns of more deaths, all linked to the initial crime. The missing child is special needs and the entire community, Amish and Plain, of Painter's Mill are helping to search. Kate Burkholder is bit mystified about the child's birthdate--the children seem to have been born far too closely together, even for an Amish family. The killer leaves a swath of death and misery, forcing Kate Burkholder into dangerous situations..
Excellent return to Ohio's Amish country with a taut, suspenseful police thriller as Chief Kate Burkholder is back, on the trail of a missing girl after her grandmother is murdered. The pace is fast and stressful, you can almost hear the clock ticking as you're reading! Enjoyed this installment more than the previous two. Recommend!
I received an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this even though I was not familiar with the series- worked fine as a stand alone. The mystery was well- paced but what really got me about this book was the look inside the Amish community, which seemed pretty balanced (to my non-expert opinion) and really taught me a lot, made me curious to learn more about this group. You have to love a book that inspires more reading!
Absolutely the best book ever. I especially enjoyed the fact part of it took place in the area I grew up in. Linda always surprises me Thrilling, exciting and lots of surprises
Wow! Another amazing entry in this series set in a rural, Amish, Ohio location. These books just keep getting better and better. You will find yourself on the edge of your seat as Sheriff Burkholder searches for a missing child and the unknown monster who has taken her.
No one does insights into the Amish community as well as Linda Castillo and the internal struggle Kate Burkholder deals with of her own Amish roots are well written.
Don’t miss this one! The book is due to be published in July, 2019.
I thoroughly enjoy Linda Castillo's Amish stories. The latest one has such a twisty plot that it kept me guessing till the end. Be sure to pick this up.
If you are looking for a quaint Amish romance, then look elsewhere. Castillo’s Chief Kate Burkholder series captures the darkest side of Amish life. In her latest, Kate is looking into the violent murder of a grandmother and the abduction of her special needs grandmother. The only witness to the event, was the kidnapped girl’s sister and she tells Kate that the other girl was taken by the “devil”. I love this series, Kate, a former member of the Amish community, walks a line between enforcing the laws of the “English” and retaining her connection with and the trust of the Amish community. This is another outstanding mystery, character development and plotting highlight Castillo’s mastery.
