Review: Rogue Most Wanted is a sweet historical romance that packs a lot of steam. The book has become one of my favorite 2019 reads because the characters were relatable and they made me sympathetic to their struggles. It’s so refreshing reading a story where the main love interest doesn’t treat the heroine like garbage. Will is loving, kind, and generous despite the hurt he’s experienced in his past. I love that he supported Thea from beginning to end. With a title like Rogue Most Wanted, I thought we would be dealing with an immature ladies man. I was so wrong! Instead I was blown away by how charming and caring Will’s character was.
To my surprise, Will was one of the best historical romance characters I’ve read. As for Thea, I love that she wanted to be independent and save her title and land. In the beginning, I found her a little frustrating and cold toward Will but that changed quickly. I loved the character growth Thea went through and the author did a great job showing it throughout each chapter.
I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Rogue Most Wanted. The author does a wonderful job creating an original storyline that will leave readers scrambling for more from Ms. MacGregor. I look forward to reading more from this author.
The opening chapter was a fun and easy introduction to the Cavensham family. Will Cavensham, the second son of a Duke, knows that he has found The One. All the men in his family just know when their soulmate is found, but poor Will finds out the hard way that young love/infatuation isn't the same thing as the real deal. After the heartbreak of rejection, he vows that love just isn't for him.
Until a nosy aunt decides otherwise.
Lady Theodora Worth was an admirable woman. I loved her outlook on life and her she refused to be cowed by her horrible relatives looking to strip her of her title and lands. It still felt a little weird to me that as a grand daughter of a Duke, she had little to no education in etiquette, but it wan't that big of a deal.
The first half of the book was great. The second.... not so much. It's like the author didn't quite know what to do with the characters once she got them established.
Enjoyable characters hampered by inconsistent pacing and a strangely untethered second act.
I absolutely loved this book. I really liked Will. This story is about Lord William Cavensham’s heart was broken years ago by a one he loved, and since that day he vowed to never love again. But his Great Aunt Stella is determined he’ll marry. Thea does not want to marry the first man she meets and Will does not want to marry. So they have a pretend engagement. I really enjoyed the plot of this book.
Lady Theodora Worth is still grieving the loss of her grandfather when the family solicitor informs her that her estate may be in jeopardy. Her grandfather's male heir is challenging her right to inherit the Earldom that could be inherited through the female line. He is not happy with only inheriting the Dukedom. Thea had taken care of her grandfather for seven years on her own as he became more senile and he hid the charter that conferred the estate on Thea. She seeks out her eccentric neighbour who agrees that Thea must marry to stop the gossip rampant in London. Thea has lived in isolation for years and has no idea how to conduct herself in society or how to find a groom. When Thea meets her neighbour's nephew sparks fly, but she doesn't wish to marry without love.
Lord William Cavensham had his heart broken years ago; he firmly believes the family fable that a Cavesham knows their true love at first sight. He has never forgotten how it felt to have his heart broken, and he has contented himself with assisting his family with the running of their estates. When his aunt summons him for immediate help, he is not expecting her to announce he is to marry. He sets out to advice his aunt's neighbour of his intention not to wed when the beguiling woman declares she won't marry him. He finds himself drawn To Thea and wanting to help her, but he can't stop fantasising about having more than friendship.
This is the fifth book in Ms MacGregor's Cavensham Heiresses' series. I have read some of the previous books in this series, but each one can be read as a standalone. This series has been a mixed bag for me, some was an okay read, and I didn't like another. this book was simply okay. I feel the author overly complicated matters. As a point of clarification to the author, Northumberland is in England, not Scotland. The main basis for the struggle in this book is the heroine has inherited a Scottish title along with an estate, but her grandfather's male heir received the English title. Her estate is in Northumberland which is the topmost point of England bordering Scotland, English rules apply, so the entire plot is inaccurate. Even if the dukedom was Scotland the estate in dispute is not. This may seem like nitpicking, but it is a significant part of the book, I like accuracy.
Aside from the above, I liked the first fifty per cent of the book, but the plot began to drag after this with a lot of unnecessary filler. I like the characters they were both likeable people who were clearly meant to be together, but I need a story to hold my interest.
I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review all thoughts an opinions are my own.
I cannot get enough of Janna MacGregor's books! I absolutely loved Thea and William's story. This book has everything you are looking for in a good romance. One moment you are so happy for them and by three quarters of the way through the book there were tears streaming down my face. This is exactly the kind of romance book I am always on the lookout for.
A charming romance with just the perfect amount of heat. I loved this book, the characters drew me in and though I might have wished for one resident jilter, Avalon, to have received more of a comeuppance than the forgiveness she received, the novel rounded out nicely. I also felt that the evil duke in question could have been a bit more abhorrent and even more forceful in his treatment of Thea, but he was decent enough in the role of antagonist, the f not necessarily cringe worthy. All in all it was a good read and I look forward to reading more from Ms. MacGregor.
I was fortunate and received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy at no charge from the author. Janna MacGregor has outdone herself in this book. The heroine, Thea, is vulnerable, yet strong and composed. The hero, Will Cavesham, is charming, dashing and honorable, yet still a little unsure about expressing his emotions. A beautiful romantic tender love story with vividly described scenes, characters pulling you in to the drama, making you feel a part of the surroundings and going-ons. Even though this book is part of a series, it can be read without having read the previous books. Janna Macgregor gets better and better with each book . A must read!
You know that moment in a book when you know you’re hooked on the story? Yeah, well here I was waiting for that moment…and waiting….and waiting. I’ll be honest, the first 40 % of the book really dragged. I didn’t feel the chemistry between characters, to me they looked more like friends than lovers. I was reading the first half of the book for ages. Every time I thought I read like ten percent more, I looked at the bottom of the page and was a little disappointed that I only read one percent. I was even thinking about quitting the book.
But I didn’t. Because this was my first Janna MacGregor’s book and I was determined to finish it.
But oh boy, was I tempted to quit it.
I really expected more from this book. I can’t even remember half of the book.
Also, the newspaper’s sections were sometimes quite annoying and unnecessary.
I don’t consider myself an expert in history but I have read a lot of historical romances so reading about them being together in a room (even though they were friends) unchaperoned or without the door open, left me quite itchy. Weren’t things like this considered as a step closer to the altar? (I’m seriously asking)
It’s an ARC so I won’t go into details that there were grammatical errors because I’m sure the book will be edited before publishing.
I’m just not happy with this book. At the end of it, if asking me about my opinion I can say just ”meh”. It took me two weeks to read it. I just wish the book hooked me from the beginning and that it wasn’t so slow.
3 ”meh” stars.
Quick read. The characters were likeable enough, but the storyline never really got interesting. There were a few times that I had to reread what Thea said in order to understand why she had said something that warranted her running out of the room. The whole idea of Thea being pressured to get married seemed silly to me. If she couldn't prove her claim, the biggest. most powerful duke in the land wasn't going to make it happen for her, so a silly little husband certainly wouldn't have. One of my biggest issues is with how fast everything happened. Both Thea and Will really could've grown nicely as characters if given a realistic time line. The part where we re meet Avalon at the end was so obviously a "hey! here's my next set of main characters!" Not hating it, but not loving it either. More of 2.5 for me.
Rogue Most Wanted is book 5 in the Cavensham Heiress Series by Janna MacGregor. Although this book is in a series, it can be read as a stand alone work. However, I advise the reader to start at the beginning and read the entire series beginning with The Bad Luck Bride. The characters are richer and the world that MacGregor creates is much more relatable.
I really enjoyed this book. It has humor, romance, and even some teary moments. There are a few steamy scenes. I think Lady Theodora is one of my favorite heroines. She is real and honest and extremely unpolished. I enjoyed the Cavensham family - especially the elderly members who were hilarious. I hope Ms MacGregor has plans for more in this series. I was gifted a copy of this book.
This one was tough for me. I just didn’t like it as much as the previous books in the series. I thought Emma and Nicks book, and Daphne and Paul’s books were excellent. McCalpin and March’s book was good but less organic than the other two. With will and Thea I felt their romance came out of left field. Right after meeting, Thea feels like she can tell Will anything and that they are best friends, which I found silly. Then they go to London and I kept waiting for them to spend time together, but no, somehow they fall in love basically spending no time together. The language was very flowery too. So overall it wasn’t a bad book, it just didn’t work for me. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series. The MC’s seem to know each other already so I have high hopes it will be as good as Daphne and Paul’s story. That seems to be the key here. The stories are definitely better when the MC’s have a previous acquaintance. Plus I think the hero of the next book is a virgin!!!!!! So I’m in.
Lady Theodora s trying to find a titled aristocrat in order to claim her land and care for her people now that her father is dead. The problem is that, even though she meets and falls in love with Lord William, she refuses to allow him to help her because, Ladykyrk is now her responsibility and, an obnoxious earl has already threatened to take her home and land if she doesn't marry him. Lady Theodora believes that the best thing to do is leave Will and, return home to marry a man she hates, just so she can claim the land she knows belongs to her.
Lord William has other ideas----!
Rogue Most Wanted by

I must preface this review with how much I love the writings of this author. I have read all her books and am never disappointed. Her characters become so real you find yourself talking to them.
Theodora Worth has her agenda she needs to marry quickly her next door neighbor intends to aid her. Aunt Stella, her neighbor, has her own agenda she wants her to marry her nephew Will.
This develops into a classic romance that only Ms MacGregor could intertwine. With humor and restraint I found this a wonderful read.
What a lovely book. Great characters! Great story line. Awesome secondary characters. Loved Will's dad and what he gives Theo.
Wow! This book took me to great romantic heights. I love the storyline. A hero with an insecurity but still manages to be a whole person with none of the darkness and brooding and cynicism. An innocent heroine who is selfless, courageous, good hearted and mature. I like that the characters had depth and are consistent. I appreciate that this book did not have angst nor stubbornness and irrational misunderstanding and a drawn out plot. No plotting ex mistress/suitor, no kidnapping, no murder mystery. Just a love story extraordinarily written to capture the emotion and heart of the reader. The main crisis of the plot is a dispute and it gave insight to the laws of that particular time period. And it also showcased the love and support of family and friends. I love how the book focused on how the hero and heroine met, got to know each other and fell in love. I just wish that the epilogue showed their lives years after and not just months after. Also the title is a bit misleading because the hero is not depicted in the book as a rogue/rake (thank goodness). He is a charming gentleman actually. There are lovemaking scenes in the book but nothing too graphic. And it was not the main focus of the book. The attraction described between the hero and heroine went beyond physical. And it was a delight to read about a genuine love story.
A great way to discover a new author for me. I have Netgalley to thank for my copy. Now, I am off to buy other books in the series.
What a wonderful read, full of love, compassion, romance, mystery and humor. I found all the characters full of warmth and understanding and I felt you could relate to them. The main characters where well written with their strengths and faults.I loved the mystery in this book and felt I had worked it out early in the book but it kept me reading to find out if I was right and I was 😊. I haven’t read any of Ms McGregor’s books before so was very surprised and happy that I got to read this I found it hard to put down. There was mild sex that this reviewer skipped but it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. I received this as ARC.
It's a testament to a writer's skill when she can evoke emotions strong enough to make you cry even when you know eventually the characters will find happiness. Janna MacGregor knows how to communicate emotions so well that the reader can feel the joy of new love as intensely as the agony of heartbreak. One will bring an uncontrollable smile to your face while the other will make you cry. I suggest reading this book alone.
Thea and Will are multi-dimensional characters who are so well developed that even when you hate the choices that they make, you understand that they were compelled to make them. Little details, such as Will wiping the tears from Thea's face, trying to ease her pain, even as her words cut him to the bone, will have you choking on the emotions. Even as you get sucked into their suffering, you find yourself desperately grasping for a solution, as if you can somehow reach into the book and say, “Wait! Don't give up! Try this!” I might add, this suffering is not limited to Will and Thea. Every member of his family feels the pain almost as intensely as the two lovers, and all are anxious to figure out a solution. And even though you know they will figure it out eventually, your brain, your compassion really, won't allow you to leave it to chance. Because God forbid they don't find their HEA!
For the final chapters of this book, I found myself ready to snap at anyone who dared to interrupt my reading. I was so emotionally invested in these characters, the tension was causing me to feel physically ill. At the resolution of the conflict, I wanted to cry with relief. If I was in any way unclear, read this book. However, seek privacy when you do so.
I have loved all of Janna MacGregor books in The Cavensham Heiresses series. Her writing reminds of Mary Balogh’s Westcott series in which a wonderful, supportive extended family with all their flaws interacts with wit and love.
This book was very emotional. Lady Theodora Worth grew up orphaned and raised in isolation by her beloved grandfather. Her desire to have a friend was heartbreaking. There is a dinner scene where she makes a slight misstep and her internal humiliation, her desperation at fitting in and making a good impression, brought tears to my eyes.
Lord William Cavensham becomes her first and best friend as he helps her navigate London society and to claim a rightful inheritance. We learn of a past jilting that has hardened his heart to love. As these two build their friendship and attraction develops, the book becomes quite romantic.
The best part of this book is the chance to enjoy all the characters from the other books and to be entertained by the interactions of Cavensham family.
I would recommend this title and this series.
I will add that I did not like the snippets from The Midnight Cryer gossip rag. They were beyond nasty, and that is viewing them from our modern Twitterverse. I found them distracting and out of sync from all the loving interactions between Thea, Will, and the family. Perhaps the impact of the gossip could have been mentioned within the narrative, rather than these jarring asides.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC
this is one sexy historical romance. I mean we start with a passionate night, that ends in a surprising revelation for our heroine. The plot is hilarious at times in a way that only a historical romance could be. Overall, it's a fun jaunt with secrets, villains, and sexy, sexy times.
Thanks to NetGalley for the eBook in exchange for an honest review!
A love story that brings a cynical second son together with a delightful Countess who has to defend her right to the title. He had been deeply hurt during his early quest for a bride and she has never had a season as she was caring for her ailing grandfather. Can necessity bring these two "misfits" together before all is lost. This is a story that will make you feel better and give you hope that good will always prevail.
I have rated this book 4 stars and recommend it those that enjoy a good historical romance without violence.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and voluntarily read, and reviewed, this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own based on my unbiased review.
