Final is the conclusion to the Caraval trilogy. I read Caraval two years ago and was immediately pulled into this magical word. I adored Scarlett so much! Her and Julian seem strong and happy. Scarlett has so much love and determination in her she's impossible not to like.
My favorite part of Finale was learning more about the deck of destiny characters. I would read a story about each and every one of them! I found myself wanting more and more info about all of their stories and their powers.
Similar to Legendary I found myself frustrated with Tella in Finale. The fact that it was still a tad love triangle-ish and her general disposition was a turn off for me.
The end was good. It was thrilling and hopeful.
I was thrilled to finally get my hands on Finale! I had fallen head over heals for Caraval and loved Legendary. Each new novel in the series stunned me with the expansion of the world building and the magic of Legendary and The Fates. By the time I finished Finale I was wasn’t sure if I was satisfied or left wanting. The story and the world evolved so much beyond where it had begun in Caraval that I was in awe and a little overwhelmed. I would love to read a fourth book to be afforded a bit more time in this wild, magical world to learn even more about it.
Flatiron Books and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Finale. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Finale is the third book in the Caraval series by author Stephanie Garber and the least successful, in my opinion. It has been two months since the Fates were freed, with serious consequences yet unknown. Tella, Legend, and Scarlett all find themselves at different crossroads, pondering their futures and the fate of their world. Caraval and the games that define it are over, but the stakes have never been higher.
Although everything wraps up with no question left unanswered in Finale, it just did not captivate me the way that Caraval did. This seemed more like a dark fairy tale than a fully imagined fantasy. On the plus side, the book was a relatively quick read, despite its length. On the negative side, I found the book to be overly dramatic, with too much of the novel dedicated to romantic issues and relationship angst. The flow of the story was interrupted with the aforementioned problems, taking the reader out of what could have been a compelling storyline. The Fates should have taken center stage more, giving more weight to the conclusion. Readers of the series will be interested in finding out the fate of their favorite characters, while those new to the series should definitely start with Caraval.
Oh how I have absolutely loved this series. Stephanie Garber is such a wonderful author. The Caraval world has been so enchanting and an absolute favorite of mine! I'm sad that it's over but holy cow this series was absolutely phenomenal!
This book had a unique premise, it was a tad bit slow at the beginning but swept me up soon enough and kept me in it's grip well until the end. I would recommend it to other fellow fantasy fans in a heartbeat. Thank you for allowing me to read and hand sell this title.
I can’t believe that Finale, the finale (yes, intentional use, obviously) to the Caraval series, is out in the world and that our time navigating the fantastical world of Caraval with sisters Scarlett and Tella has finally come to an end. In Finale, readers are treated to the perspectives of both Scarlett and Tella, as the sisters are both faced with big life decisions that will affect their lives and the lives of those they care for. It differs from its two predecessors as it no longer contains the same carnival/magical performance backdrop that I loved so much, and that threw me off for a bit when I started reading. But eventually, I got swept up in the magic and mystery and mayhem that this series has constantly presented readers with, which is a testament both to Garber’s way with words and the fact that she created these characters whose stories I care about. Immersing myself in this whimsical world that Stephanie Garber created has always been a treat for my imagination, and this time around, it was no different! I was invested in finding out just how it all would end, even when the turns of the story took me down roads that had me internally screaming because of the emotional roller coaster they took me on. Apart from my reservations regarding the lack of an actual Caraval happening, I did also find the wrap-up to feel a little rushed compared to the actual build-up. But other than that, I still very much enjoyed this series ender and would highly recommend it (along with the rest of the books, of course).
Amazing as always. Such a creative series, I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys a good fantasy.
Overall I did enjoy this conclusion to the Caraval trilogy. I was hoping for a bit more and some areas were lacking in my opinion but in general it was still quite good.
Tella's caring for Legend's well-being both impressed and annoyed me. I was more irritated that she was so wrapped up in him, her bond with her sister kept wavering it seemed. Also I miss her and Dante. It is all Legend in this one and these dream sharing they get into. I wanted to also learn more about this other world that is mentioned and then dropped. Scarlett makes some foolish choices in this one but also some more crucial ones. I liked watching how both she and Julian mature in this relationship. I also liked learning more about the dress she is always wearing. It was nice to see the other Fates. They fascinated me. Or at least some of them do.
I really wanted more of Legend's history. I would love a prequel. His story. How he truly became Legend and started Caraval. His triumphs and falls. This series has a lot of open endings. Regarding Paradise, the cards, another world, the witch, Legend's first love, etc that never fully get answered. Some get hinted answers at best. I prefer those small but essential things answered.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This is the final book in the Caraval trilogy. This book was worth the wait and it brings the story to a close. I feel a little strange thinking back to the dark and eerie tale that has been woven. I am still a little broken hearted and angry at some of the turn of events, but that is what makes an author great is when that can make you feel a whole range of emotions. I feel for the characters and all that they have been through. I want there to be more for I still feel there is more story to be told.
THE WORLD OF CARAVAL IS BACK!!! I LOVE Tella and Scarlett so much and this was a very satisfying end to a great series! I would recommend this to anyone who has read Legendary and squealed in anticipation.
Finale is the capable end to Garber's magical Caraval trilogy. And I do mean capable. It wraps up the mysteries of the previous books and gives what I thought was a satisfying ending.
But. (I know. There's always a but) Finale didn't feel as lush as Caraval or Legendary. I was sucked into the book thanks to excellent plotting but it didn't have the same magic and intoxicating atmosphere as the previous two.
Still. I am satisfied with the ending. Very recommended for fans of the books.
Finale is a lush, lyrical ending to the most magical adventure of all. Garber made me feel more than I thought possible and she has some of the best descriptions I've ever read. We get dual perspectives from our beloved sisters as we follow them through the end of their journey. I usually figure things out fairly early on in a novel but I was guessing up until the very last page. This book was just as dark and twisted as if you ran away to play Caraval.
The Fates were even more terrifying than before, especially when humanized. The unique magic and tasks they had to complete kept me on the edge of my feet. Garber has a way of describing something you've never seen before so well that it jumps off of the page.
Caraval swept me up from the very beginning and I'm not sure if I'm ready to say goodbye. It's a truly fitting end to this magical journey but I can't promise it won't hurt you all the way to the end.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Flatiron Books through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.*
I have been a fan of Stephanie Garber's world since her first novel. Like all series endings though, there is worry that it will disappoint because how can a story remain just as good as it was in the first book? Thankfully, but not surprising given everything Ms. Garber builds and the freedom she gives her characters to make their own mistakes, Finale is a worthy finish for such a spectacular series. We get answers to long-held questions. We get to see the famous Fates in action. We get more drama, more magic, more political machinations, and more romance than we ever thought possible. We see Tella and Scarlett come into their own as women of strength and conviction. And romance. I did mention the romance. Swoon-worthy without becoming sickening, Finale delights in all aspects. I am terribly sad to see this series come to an end, but I certainly hope that Ms. Garber is not quite done with the world of Caraval. There appear to be so many stories still waiting for their turn in the spotlight.
A satisfying end to a magical, twisty series! I read it almost entirely in one sitting, as I did with its previous two installments.
I cannot rave and gush about, not only FINALE, but the entire Caraval series by Stephanie Garber. Garber has created a stunning atmospheric world that you immediately become sucked into. That is what Caraval, Legendary and FInale was like for me. I am happy and content with how FINALE wrapped up. What I am not happy about, however, that it's over. (sadface)
I wanted so much more from this book. When I finished Legendary I had high, high hopes for the conclusion of this series. I feel like there was so much added that was unnecessary and not enough growth from the characters. In fact, the characters felt a bit stagnant and in some cases regressed. Going into it I loved the idea of dueling POVs but one of them felt really pointless. Overall though the series as a whole was fun.
4.5 stars.
This was really different from the previous books, but I really liked it! In fact, I didn't want to put this down, because there were no good "stopping points" / lulls. The dual perspective between the sisters was a great opportunity to see how they each grew and made sure both got satisfying closure by the end, and normally I'm not a fan of love triangles, so I was pleasantly shocked to find myself deeply invested in all the romantic drama - all the buildup over the trilogy paying off. And I often feel unsatisfied by the Big Bad Battle in a series finale, but this one was so exciting and such a joy to read.
In short, this book just obliterated my expectations in the most delightful way.
When I finished Legendary last year, I knew the story wasn’t ever. I immediately wanted a third book. I wanted answers. Someone obviously heard my requests and answered, because Finale was announced shortly afterwards I wrote my review. Now I’m sitting in the exact same position I found myself in last time as well.
I was so excited to receive an eARC of Finale and quickly made it priority. I really wanted the answers I desperately wanted. Now, I must admit that I forgot what my questions were, but I’m pretty sure I got the answers I wanted. Everything came to a nice conclusion and I felt that both Tella’s and Scarlett’s story felt complete. I didn’t really have anymore questions afterwards.
In this book, chapters were written in both Tella’s and Scarlett’s perspectives. I had more interests in Tella’s chapters rather than Scarlett’s chapters. I really enjoyed Tella’s perspective in Legendary and there wasn’t really any difference in Finale either. I think Tella deals with magic and Fates stuff more than Scarlett’s, so that’s why I think I like her chapters more. Scarlett, on the other hand, had a huge improvement in her perspective chapters. In Caraval, I wasn’t a big a fan, but now I really enjoyed reading her chapters as well.
There was one line (or a section) where I kept going back to because it just kept giving me a certain thought. Although Tella’s and Scarlett’s stories are now over, but what if a new story is only beginning? After discovering this one detail, all I wanted now was this potential new spin-off. I will not say who or what or anything as I do not want to spoil anything. It could be great for another book, but the only problem is I’m not sure what the plot would be. However, I’m sure Stephanie Garber could come up with something great. I’ll just be here, silently hoping that this will be true one day.
There was a bit where I did not like this one character at all, but apparently a lot of people did beforehand? I’m not sure discussing this would be sort of spoiler-ish, so I’m choosing not to discuss about it. All I am going to say is that fans of this character is certainly in a for a surprise. I thought this character was on the better side, but I guess their true colors showed after all.
In the end, Finale was definitely a good finale for this magical, adventurous series. The sense of magic has never left and I always enjoyed every piece of it. The classics twists are still there. The conclusion was epic. If Legendary broke you, Finale may break you even more. It’s just that good.
This one just wasn’t all there for me. Whether there was no Caraval” to create the mystique or too many love triangles or a poor editing feeling - it didn’t work for me. All the heroines had intense love triangles and it really detracted from the message of love; maybe one one storyline with this element could have worked but not all three. I found myself skimming through most of the whining about the extraneous love interests and losing track of the plot. This book took much longer than it should have to read because I couldn’t get lost in it like the previous installments.
The Caraval games are over but the growing presence of the Fates is threatening the world of Scarlett and Tella. In this final installment Scarlett and Julian are not as key to the story as Tella and Legend. Tella is uncertain about how Legend really feels about her so when Jacks comes sniffing around, she can’t help but fall for his charms – at least a little.
One of the best parts of this series was the game of Caraval. Without it, the continuation of the story with the Fates is not quite as strong. It was the uncertainty of the game that was so alluring and it is missed here.
As for the characters, Legend is an enigma and that keeps readers guessing about his true intentions. Jacks is witty, seductive and adds spice to the plot. Tella is determined and smart and her hope of stopping the Fates is limited by her very humanity.
Garber brings the story to a satisfying conclusion. Her loyal readers will devour Finale as they have the first two books in this outstanding series.
