We see an end to a great trilogy following tella and her sister scar. We get an amazing character arc from Legend that will keep you guessing what exactly he is up to. I couldn't put the book down! Tella pushes herself past boundaries and risks it all to get answers and for her and her sister to save their mother and for Legend as well.
Finale is such a satisfying ending to the Caraval Trilogy! It's such an adventurous treat that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish! Stephanie Garber really pulled the series together in this one. While Caraval and Legendary had the game of Caraval being played, Finale does not have the game played, but it sure did seem like our characters still were. I could not stop reading to see what would happen in the end!
At the end of Legendary I didn't know where this story was going to go and it went in so many directions that kept me so invested to it! The story turning to the Fates being released and having to stop The Fallen Star is so incredible. Going up against the Fallen Star really brought out the best in all the characters and left them having to make tough decisions on what was right and what was wrong. To choose the right path or choose the selfish one. It was nice reading more about their mother Paloma and hearing more of her back story. Her presence throughout the novel helped Tella and Scarlett a lot to discover more about themselves and how they can relate to their mother. I didn't expect to discover some of the things we learned in Finale! I kept reading like what???
Reading each book, I became more and more in love with these characters. They each had great character development especially Donatella and Scarlett. The Dragna Sisters are amazing female characters and were a pleasure to read about. I loved how each of them brought different personalities and traits to the story. Watching the both of them go up against the Fallen Star is so inspiring. The both of them would do what they thought was right to protect themselves, the kingdom, and those they love.
Legend has come such a long way since we first read about him in Caraval. I began to really like him as we learned more about him and who he really is in Legendary. It was intriguing watching him battle with his emotions and love for Tella. Deciding whether he wants to stay immortal and never lover her or give in and love her and lost immortality. It really was a true test for him and it was exciting watching his decision. Julian. Oh sweet, sweet Julian. I really enjoyed him through the entire series and I loved the role he played for in the story. He cares so much for Scarlett and really would put himself in any situation to make sure she is safe.
Jacks is by far one of my favorite characters in the series and that I've read about. He is just so cunning and sarcastic. His interactions with Donatella were so funny to read. The banter between the two of them never failed to make me laugh. Their whole situation is complicated, but at the end of the day I feel Jacks did care for Donatella. He probably hated he couldn't control it, but I don't think he hated it either. He might be a Fate, but he also just seemed like a lost soul looking for his place in the world.
I liked how in Finale it was from the POVs of Donatella and Scarlett. Their stories are stories within a story. It felt like I was reading two different parallel plots that lead to the same end destination. The story is in depth and complex and battles so many emotions for all. I never expected the love triangles to play as serious of a role as they did. Each of them helped with significant roles in where the plot would go and where it lead to in the end. The romance for both Dragna Sisters gave off so many emotions that were displayed perfectly in the novel. Reading Finale I could feel it through the words when they were at their happiest, confused, or sad. These also were not just your typical love triangles on one end we have Tella, Legend and Jacks. One human, an immortal, and a fate. The other end we have a human with abilities, an age-less guy, and a human. There were many moments where these characters didn't know which way their relationships would go or which is the right and safest one.
The Fates were such an interesting bunch of people that no two were alike. They were handled well and written where there wasn't too little or too much information about them. It was balanced out well and I enjoyed reading about them. I liked that the Fates played a significant role in the plot and to our characters. It was a nice touch with the parallel storylines that we got to see different Fates interacting with Donatella and Scarlett. Although, they are definitely not to be trusted it was so exciting to watch and see what our characters would do. The decision to trust the Fates was definitely defining moments for the characters. It helped them build their character development and to make precise decisions and not impulse ones.
The Caraval Trilogy is one of my favorites that I ever read. It was exciting, adventurous, magical, mysterious, steamy, romantic, glamorous, and everything I could ask for in a story. It's written so beautiful and so well. Stephanie Garber's descriptions from the clothes to the environment makes you feel like you are really there with our characters. This is such a unique world to read about with amazing characters and a plot that you never can tell where it will lead to. I am sad to see the series end, but can't wait to do a re-read of it one day!
I know my review cannot do justice to this book or the series, you just have to trust me and read it! I was fascinated from the beginning and even though this is Finale, there is a scene that could lead to the continuation of the story.
Magical, magical, magical!
I loved Caraval and Legendary, and I eagerly anticipated the ending. This novel is gorgeously written that is centered on two characters Scarlett and Tella. I was a bit disappointed that the story focused more on the girls’ love stories rather than their character development. Still, the world of Caraval is more explained and detailed. The story was evenly paced until the end. This brings me to the ending. I did not like how it ended. It was very rushed and did not give me enough closure for a trilogy. I came away from the book feeling a bit dissatisfied. Thus, I would have loved Finale and this trilogy better if the author would have spent as much focus on the ending as she did in the beginning of Caraval. Nevertheless, Finale was a thrilling ride. The overall series itself was an enjoyable and refreshing reading experience. I recommend this for fans of Sarah B. Larson, Rae Carson, and Roshani Chokshi.
I'm so sad this series is over!
I love Scarlett, Tella, and Co., and would read ALL of their adventure stories (and am secretly hoping for a Legend/Julian prequel...). BUT I do have to say that I think this is the weakest entry in the series.
Because...
This story is told from the alternating POV of both Scarlett and Tella, so we get both their voices. The problem that I have with this book is that Tella is a shadow of her former personality. Whereas she was always the bold, adventurous, headstrong sister, in this book she spends a lot of time being the wavering-between-two-boys-which-oh-which-do-I-choose girl. She ponders so, so much and laments over her decision, and it just really kinda annoyed me. She lacks agency in this installment, and that disappointed me.
On the other hand, Scarlett really seemes to come into her own in this book. (It is almost like the two girls did a complete role-reversal, which was a little weird for me.) She is strong and makes important decisions, and (surprisingly, actually) is the linchpin to the whole story.
And also because...
All of the love triangles. Jeez. So. Many. Love. Triangles.
The concept of the Fates is an interesting one, and I think that was handled well. We get to learn a lot more about some of them, and see others in action, and man can they be terrifying.
I missed a little bit the sense of mystery that the other two books had, and the magical atmosphere of Caraval. I think that is part of the reason why it didn't ring quite as true for me. It is more character-driven than event or setting-driven, and the characters seemed a bit diminished in this book.
But overall, I am still a big fan of this series. I think Garber hit the mark on her first time out, and I am definitely a reader of her future books.
I loved this finish to the Caraval series. It was the final fantasy of the series I had been waiting on. Tella and Scarlet will always have a piece of my heart. The details and landscape of this book blew me away. It was magical and weaved my mind into a world I did not want to leave!
Finale was everything I hoped it to be. This series has progressively been getting better with each book and I can honestly say I devoured this like I was one of the Fates because I just couldn't get enough. So much happened yet I still wanted to read more even after the very last page.
Finale is full of thrills, hope, love, heartbreak, desire and most of all, magic. We get to see the majority of the story unravel in Donatella's POV (thankfully), but Scarlett gets some time to tell the story through her eyes as well and it's good that we do because we actually get to finally see some character growth from her. She was the weakest character of the series for me but she actually redeemed herself and surprised me along the way in this book.
Legend is easily the best character in Finale. He's full of magic, dreams and nightmares, and he's honestly the most real character of all of them because he knows who and what he is and doesn't try to change or lie to himself. He's a total villain but in the best way possible.
The chemistry between Legend and Tella is smoldering. They are perfect for each other and I couldn't help but constantly long for them to cross each other's paths.
The storyline with the Fates was really well done and easy to follow with little surprises along the way that I didn't see coming. The world-building in Finale was the best of the series, paired with magical descriptions of the settings and characters.
I was a spectator in this wicked game and with this final curtain call, I'm giving it a standing ovation.
THE TIME HAS COME! I have waited for this day for a long time. I can’t believe this series is coming to an end! If you haven’t read the previous books, you may not want to read any further. No spoilers here…it just won’t make much sense to you. Thank you Flatiron Books for gifting me an e-copy in exchange for my honest review. As it is said, all good things must come to an end. I love that this book is written in both Scarlet and Tella’s point of view. I wish the second book was the same! If you have been following my reviews for long enough, it’s no surprise that I loved the first book way more than the second book. In fact, a good friend of mine says that she’s still trying to get through reading the second book. I hear that quite a lot from people. This book is different! It reads a LOT like the first book which made me so happy! Stephanie has such a talent for detailing her stories so beautifully. I could read her descriptions for days and days. They’re just so magical! If you don’t like love triangles, then this book isn’t for you. I, on the other hand, LIVE for love triangles and just devoured this story. I squealed the entire time. My husband could guess which book I was reading from miles away. It was a wonderful ending to the series in my opinion and I will cherish this story for years to come.
This was a fantastic ending to the trilogy with great plot twists and engaging characters. I would definitely recommend this series to teens looking for magical stories with a bit of a fairytale feel.
First and foremost, I want to thank the publisher for providing me with an ARC via NetGalley.
Oh Finale… This is definitely not the review I had envisioned writing about this book. While I gave Caraval 4 stars, I absolutely LOVED Legendary and gave it 5, so to say I have anxiously been awaiting Finale is a large understatement. Unfortunately, Finale just didn’t work for me the way Caraval and Legendary did. With that being said, I have a strong feeling my opinion will be the unpopular one, so please do not let my review stop you from reading this book.
I was excited to see that Finale picked right up from where Legendary ended. Paloma is still in a deep sleep after having been released from the deck of dynasty, Tella still longs for Legend while keeping Jacks in her back pocket, and Scarlett is writing letters to her former fiancé while Julian has been away for 6 weeks. What I enjoyed most about this book was getting a deeper look into The Fates and their “history” both past and present and its effects on their world. I would have enjoyed learning even more about The Fates, especially those with an essential role in the story.
Unfortunately, throughout reading this book I kept finding myself longing for another game of Caraval. I wanted to experience the magic, wonder, and trickery it presented. Without this aspect I felt like this story just didn’t meld with the other two and the writing seemed to be more rushed and fluffed in spots. Often I found myself falling asleep while reading, instead of wanting to pull an all nighter to finish it.
I am excited to see what other readers think and feel upon reading this and cannot wait to discuss it with a larger audience. I look forward to the future works of Garber and intend to keep following this author. While this was my least favorite book in the series, I will still continue to recommend that others read the series because of the magic and wonder it holds.
First line: Scarlett Dragna’s bedroom was a palace built of wonder and the magic of make-believe.
Summary: Caraval is over but the most dangerous game is just beginning. The Fates have been freed are gaining strength. Legend is now the heir to the empire. However, Tella wants Legend to choose her over the throne but it is not that simple. Meanwhile, her sister Scarlett learns a deep secret about herself. Even as they are learning more about themselves they must try and stop the Fates from taking over the empire and enslaving its people.
My Thoughts: I love the world of Caraval. It is beautiful and sinister. I was happy that the narrative was both sisters. The previous books gave us a look into each one of them and this gave me closure. I found the beginning a little slow to start. And maybe it would have been different if I had read it right after Legendary. I came to like several of the Fates throughout the story. They were not all monsters but had more complicated stories. I like that Graber leaves it open at the end in case she wants to expand on her universe.
FYI: Such a beautiful cover!
What a Finale! Stephanie Garber did an amazing job of luring the reader into this world and then making them fall head over heels for it. It's truly a captivating tale of impossible choices and an unthinkable sacrifice.
***I received an eARC from Flatiron Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The fates are out and all hell has broken loose. The author does not disappoint with this third novel. A perfect ending to an amazing series. Wrapping everything up in a nice little bow with some playful potential for more adventures. I would love to see a small novella of adventures past the end with Tella and Legend.
In the first book of this trilogy, we were swept into the magic of Caraval, the magical game where the two sisters, Tella and Scarlet, show their brains, their courage, and their devotion to one another. In Legendary, we saw Legend, the master of the game, as the Fates attempt to ruin the human's lives and once again, the sisters step up. Now, in the Finale, the diabolical bad guys, the Fates, are running lose and causing murder and mayhem, literally. Poison is a nasty piece of business as he freezes entire families, the Assassin can move through by time and space creating some helpful solutions, and the Fallen Star has issues with fire torture and power envy. As Julian and Scarlet discover their love for each other, Scarlet also learns of deep secrets that involve her mother, the Fates, and her own past. At the same time, Tella and Legend take part in a love triangle with Jacks, the King of Hearts and a Fate who has an 'interesting' take on relationships. Stephanie Garber brings together the most intriguing cast of characters seen in YA fantasy. Finale is a worthy culmination to this magical and beautiful trilogy.
Netgallery and the publisher provided an eARC, in exchange for my honest opinion.
Finale was my least favorite out of the trilogy. First off, I'm not a big fan of the alternating POVs. But I'm sure it was a necessary evil, since the sisters have different plotlines. Unrealistically, both sisters also end up tangled up in love triangles. Scarlett's in particular was unnecessary and very short-lived. I really loved Tella/Dante in Legendary, but they lost a little bit of their shine when I found out Legend and Dante were the same person. However, this left me pretty invested in Tella/Jacks vs Tella/Legend. There are a lot of similarities between both Jack's and Legend, Neither of them is all good or all bad, but I think they both had the potential to reallylove Tella. However, because Tella/Legend was endgame I feel like Garber did Jack's a disservice, personally I think Tella could've ended up with Legend without making him a villan. I guess in the end Tella was trying to choose the lesser of two evils. However, even though I didn't like their love triangle,
I think Julian and Scarlett really grew into themselves both individually and together. Finale has lots of surprises in store for the reader. Overall. It was an enjoyable read especially for those that loved the first two books in the trilogy.
I was a little disappointed with this series finale (see what I did there?)...bummer.
First of all, I've always been Team Tella as opposed to Team Scarlet (and yes, I know they're on the same team), so I just wasn't all that excited to have Scarlet's POV back in this book. It was hard not to skim over her parts and get back to Tella, who for me is a much more interesting character with a more complex story arc. So much of Scarlet's story seemed unnecessary to the plot... the competition between Julian and her almost-fiance (which never actually takes place), her powers and becoming a fate (which she never actually does), the will-she-or-won't she with Julian (uh...duh...obvious).
Secondly, why...WHY...WHY do we still need a love triangle...for BOTH girls? Seriously? This is book three. I want to read about the Fates and how awful they are and how they can be stopped and what's up with Legend and his powers...not how Scarlet and Tella are still waffling with all of the hot young men who want them. And why does EVERYTHING in this book have to do with love? The love triangles, Paradise's once-love, can Legend or the Fates love, the fact that a Fate's one weakness is loving a human and losing their immortality. Ugh. I love me some romance, but come on.
Finally, there's no Caraval here. No game. Legend is focused on the throne and the girls are focused on the boys and the Fates are off playing dirty tricks. I missed that is-this-real-or-part-of-the-game element from the first two books.
The saving grace here is the last 100 or so pages...FINALLY we get to know the fates a little more (I could have read 200 more page about The Assassin and Poison alone) and devise a plan to defeat them or work with them or run away. FINALLY things got exciting and I had to finish the ending before I could go to sleep.
So overall disappointing, but I'm pretty satisfied with how the trilogy ends.
Finale is the 3rd installment in the most incredible series I stumbled upon ! Magic, mayhem and love in twisted try to untangle form ! I absolutely loved each book and you learned more about the characters and what made each one special and how they were important to Legand and Caraval but in this final one you learn how Stella and Scarlett are the true heroes and everyone else is along for the ride. I will not give any spoilers but I can say the ending will leave you wanting so much more but no cliff hanger ! You just don’t want to say goodbye to these incredible characters that you feel like you have come to know throughout the books !
I was so excited to be able to get an advanced copy of this book. I enjoyed the first two books in the Caraval Series & couldn’t wait to read the Finale.
It was a nice wrap up of Scarlett & Tella’s story. I would love it if Stephanie Garber would continue on with a prequel about the Fates & more about Legend.
I’ve enjoyed this series so much, especially after finishing Night Circus & wanting more from the author.
I would definitely recommend this to students & have recommended this series to friends.
I’m sad that it’s over though but have enjoyed this YA series immensely.
Finale is the final installment in author Stephanie Garber's Caraval trilogy. The story takes place 2 months after the events of Legendary. Even though this story is told from both Scarlett and Donatella Dragna POV's, it is Tella that gets a huge chunk of the story. Just like she did in Legendary. Since the book is mostly about Tella, let's start with her. Tella has won Caraval but she hasn't received her prize from Legend who now has even bigger fishes to fry and more enemies to deal with.
Tella is enraptured every night in dreams wrapped in the magic of Legend while encountering the devious Jacks during the day. Tella and Legend are on a collision course with the Fates who were released in the previous installment. It is fair to say that Tella spends an inordinate amount of time thinking about Legend, her mother, and Jacks, a bastard of a fate who has decided that Tella is going to be his whether she likes it or not. Talia has always been brazen, reckless, and makes silly mistakes that come back to haunt her.
Tella must not only deal with Legend and Jacks, but the rest of the Immortal Fates who have returned to the Meridian Empire seeking a bit of vengeance. Meanwhile, Scarlett has chosen to meet with her ex fiance Nicolas who had thought she was dead, which leads to a game between him and Julian who disappeared for weeks, but now wants to focus all his time and energy on making up to Scarlett. One could honestly say that it was pretty apparent as to what the author had already intended before she started writing this book.
Scarlett's story isn't just about her and Julian, or her and Nicolas which is basically a blip on the radar, it is much more intense after meeting certain fates who might hold the key to her underdeveloped powers and a way to defeat them. She also has to understand that there is someone who wants her to become immortal and thus heir to the Meridian crown. Scarlett's story has been an interesting one from the beginning, and now that it is over, her ending is one that I am sure readers will be pleased with. It is fair to say that I was hoping for a more equal story between the sisters. But, such as life.
I lost interest in the last book of the series. I wasn't sure what the plot was about as it didn't give a definitive, clear plot line with both sisters. I loved book one and two and will still recommend the series. The last book wasn't my favorite.
