What a great start to a new series! The Knightly brothers went to New Orleans to celebrate youngest brother Brig’s 21st Birthday. During their drunken revelry, they encounter a fortune teller who ends up cursing their love life. None of them took it seriously until they were back five days and an event occurs that cements their reputation in the town of Port Snow, Maine as cursed and un-datable. Two years have passed and oldest brother Griffin saves new teacher in town, Ren Winters, from an encounter from a suicidal moose. Of course, the attraction is instant. Will they be able to defy the curse? I loved the Knightly family! Griffin and Ren were a great couple, and watching their relationship grow was fun. I cannot wait to see the rest of the brothers break the curse as well! I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.
When I had the chance to read this book by Meghan Quinn I jumped on it instantly. Having yet to read a book by her that I didn’t like, I had high hopes for this one. However, while I liked this book, I can say with certainty that it isn’t one of my favorites she’s written.
I’m not sure what it was, but it felt like this book was missing something. Perhaps it’s because I’ve grown accustomed to Meghan Quinn’s witty and humorous writing style but I felt sad when this book lacked that humor, especially because the story had the potential for it. However, instead, I found that it didn’t really fit the category of being a humorous book nor did it seem to be a sad book, so I found myself struggling to enjoy it like I wanted to.
That Second Chance tells the story of Ren Winters and Griffin Knightly. After a drunken night in New Orleans Griffin and the rest of the knightly brothers have come to believe that they are cursed and doomed to never have happy or successful relationships. When Ren moves to their small town of Port Snow, Maine Griffin begins to fall for her. However, he can’t bring himself to have a relationship with her for fear of losing her to the curse.
As I was reading this I was excited to see some characters from Meghan Quinn’s other books such as Beck and Rylee because I love them which is what I wanted to feel with Griffin and Ren.
While I enjoyed the two of them, part of me found their story a bit dull. I love a slow burn romance, but I never found myself feeling invested in their relationship.
However, I did fall in love with the rest of the Knightly brothers while reading this, so I’m excited to learn their stories.
That Second Chance is an incredibly sweet and charming story that I was absolutely addicted to! I got swept up in Ren & Griffin's romance and couldn't stop reading. Griffin was quite the hero - such a dedicated, hardworking, man who believed he was unlucky in love because of a curse. But when Ren comes to town, he can't seem to take his eyes of the new girl in town. She finds herself drawn to him too, but only time will tell if she will break down the walls that Griffin has around his heart.
I know that we got a brief glance of Port Snow back in Two Wedding Crashers, but getting to spend an extended period of time there was so much fun! I completely fell in love with the town and the Knighly Brothers - all of them (and the sister too)!! Such a hilarious and crazy family, always meddling in the others lives.....but all of it done from a place of love.
If you like small-town romances, you are absolutely going to love this one.
This book was the perfect mix of humour and crazy family antics, a deliciously slow burn romance packed full of emotion and a wee bit of angst. I truly enjoyed it and didn’t want to put it down. Ren moves to Port Snow to start over, and Griffin is reeling from a terrible loss and refusing to move on. Add in 4 crazy siblings and a town full of gossips and an overbearing mother and you have the makings of an excellent story. I cannot wait for the rest of the Knightly brothers books!
Would have been a 5 star but it was a huge let down for how the curse storyline played out. What a huge disappointment!!!!!!! Author failed to deliver. Missed opportunity.
Loved the moose!!! Amazing family of four hot brothers that I can’t wait to continue reading about. The incorporation of the family business being what it was is like a breath of fresh air in the world of too many similar books out there.
That second chance Meghan Quinn 4 stars
Brig and his brothers are in New Orleans for his 21 St birthday party Brig is twirling in streets dancing with a mixed drink in hand .Next and his brothers have a run in with a palm reader. The woman places a love curse on them that any of their relationship s will fail.Griffin is a firefighter and helps run the family store.Griffin has a broken heart from his wife dieing and does not want to move on. After Griffin saves Ren from car accident they become friends and he fights back love. His family trys to get him to pursue love. Its a battle between Griffin and Ren of whether to connect and become lovers. I thought the fooling around at beach was a line between two much in public and romantic. I also wondered whether 2 years is long enough pursue a woman after wifes death although felt like they made a great couple and should be together.

I want to live in Port Snow! I really enjoyed this one - loved all the characters and the humour. All the brothers were great fun and Griff was swoony if not a tad irritating about the curse!
This was a slow burn but oooh such a good slow burn. Ren was funny, quirky and had a big heart that Griff couldn’t help falling. His meddlesome family were very entertaining and can’t wait to read the other brother’s stories,
A feel good read with some laughs.
Thanks to NetGalley for the copy.
Normally when it comes to a romance book in modern day I brace myself and wait to get over the first couple chapters until the book picks up. Meghan Quinn's writing doesn't call for that. From that first page, she engages you into the Knightly brothers and continues to reel you in.
Ren and Griffin have a sweet, cute love story that isn't filled with obnoxious filler or chitchat. It's a well written book, with a bit of steam in some areas, that leaves me awaiting the next book.
I am a big fan of Meghan Quinn and let me say this book did not disappoint. From page one it reels you in.
Griffin is celebrating his brother Turing in New Orleans when they disrupt a palm reader , she is none too pleased they find humor in her craft . She curses them in love! as they laugh it off a few days later tragedy strikes, it closes griffin off for 2 long years until he meets Ren. Both characters have been through their own heart break in one way or another .
The story is heartwarming with some definite steam! It’s a must read ! I’m looking forward to the next book in this series , my hopes is Reid is next
I loved this one. I fall in love with the Knightly brothers and Port Snow. The Knightly brother have trip to New Orleans which they believe have left them cursed. Reid, Brig, Rogan, Griffin, and Jen make up the Knightly siblings. Their parents are great too. I loved the dynamics of this family. This is the type of family I want. This book is Griffin's story. Griffin has had a bad past and he keeps people at a length because of the curse. Ren is new to town and makes a grand entrance by having a run in with a moose. Ren is has a rough patch an she''s starting over in a small town way away from her parents. I loved her parents. Her Mom is a helicopter mom but she's so sweet. In the story Ren talks about taco potpie and I had never heard of taco potpie. I kind of bummed that there wasn't a recipe for it included in the back of the story but I looked up a recipe and had to make it. There was nothing I didn't like about these characters or the story line. It's a perfect sweet read.
I think this is the absolute best book I’ve read by Meghan Quinn. It showed off her humore, wit, and heart without being so heavily focused on the physical aspect of their relationship. I laughed, I cried and I cheered for Griffin and Ren. Can’t wait for the next in this series!
**3.5 Stars**
Hmmmm... I'm having a hard time putting together my thoughts and figuring out a star rating for this one.
This book was cute. It was romantic and sweet. Ren and Griffin were good characters. I liked the small town aspect and I definitely would love to visit a place like Port Snow. I think I figured out my problem. Everything was "good" and "cute" and I "liked" it. I hold Meghan Quinn to a really high standard because she is one of my all time favorites and always an automatic one-click for me. This book was lacking some of the Meghan Quinn pizzazz I'm used to. I was missing the humor she always brings into her books. There wasn't any witty banter and there was only maybe one or two funny situations.
Now, this doesn't mean this wasn't a good book because it definitely was good and entertaining. I think I just expect a certain MQ recipe and I didn't get it from this one. I think if I had been expecting this formula I would have liked it a lot more. However, if you're into small town romances and really sweet, feel good stories, this is definitely for you. I read it really quickly and was engaged the whole time. Overall, as a contemporary romance, I definitely recommend this one!
ARC provided by NetGalley. When I seen this I had to try for it and was stoked to be given the chance to read this book and let me say it DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! I am a HUGE Meghann Quinn fan. From the moment I started this book I couldn’t put it down. I laughed so hard way too many times in this book. I had a constant smile for almost the whole book. As all of Mrs. Quinn’s books it had it’s sad moments but overall excellent book. And a great beginning to a great series. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for these brothers.
I read this book in one day. It was so good. I've read a few of Meghan Quinn's other work and haven't been as engaged by them as I was by That Second Chance. I loved the relationships between Griffin's family and seeing all of their personalities come together. I felt for Ren's parents who didn't want to let her go but the entire book I was cheering for her while she claimed her independence. I liked these two together and although I don't usually go for the widow/widower trope this book handled it very well. I'm looking forward to more of the Getting Lucky series.
I have been eagerly waiting for That Second Chance since I read Two Wedding Crashers. I was eager to get back to Port Snow and those Knightly brothers. And what a fun return it was!
Meghan Quinn is one of the most versatile romance writers. There really isn't a style she can't write. I have adored her romantic comedies, become shattered by her deeply emotional contemporaries, and now relaxed with her classic contemporary romance. That's what That Second Chance was in my opinion, a classic contemporary romance. I would put this book in the same category as a good Lauren Layne or Jessica Lemmon romance. It was a fun read. There were some deeper emotional things going on for the characters, but I never felt a deep level of angst. I appreciated that.
Okay, back to those Knightly brothers. That Second Chance was a great introduction to them. I'm happy Meghan Quinn started with the eldest brother, Griffin. I loved Griffin. He was the eldest who was so put together and did everything for the right reasons. His story started off a little sad. Griffin had previous lost his childhood sweetheart and wife (I am the only one who wished they also got a book about this relationship? You know, kind of like Meghan did with her recent duets?). He wasn't looking for love, but it when he was least expecting it. This story was about Griffin moving on from the past and learning to love again. He was lucky to do so with Ren Winters.
Ren was sunshine in a subtle way. Like when the clouds just start to move out. She had this easy-going quality despite having been through some tough stuff herself. (Again, I wish there was a book about Ren before because I was curious about what happened prior and her parents and a lot of stuff.) I liked what she brought both Port Snow and Griffin.
Ren and Griffin's relationship was sweet. It moved slowly and quickly all at the same time. They developed this cute friendship first. Nothing can go completely smooth in a romance novel, though, so it was fun to experience them navigating all of the issues that came from their backgrounds and thoughts. It was also fun that it happened in such a small town setting. I loved how Griffin's family didn't hesitate to butt into their budding relationship. That Second Chance was a lovely small town contemporary romance.
Back to those other Knightly brothers. I liked the glimpse of each character I got. They may have looked similar, but they had distinct personalities that I'm very excited to get to know in their upcoming books. I just know Meghan Quinn has great love stories coming for us.
This book is the first one I read by this author, and have now become a fan.
The premise of the series is a curse given to the four Knightly brothers during a drunken weekend in New Orleans. When days after Griffin, the oldest, loses his young wife, they all believe that the curse set on them will keep them from ever getting their HEA.
Two years later, Ren Winters is driving into town when a car accident sends Griffin, a volunteer firefighter , to her rescue. Thus begins a sweet, but fragile relationship.
While their story was touching, it’s the family dynamics, both the Knightly’s as the Winters’, that make this story special. The author creates a quaint small town in Maine, filled with interesting inhabitants.
With an engaging plot and complex characters, this story and I foresee others in the series, will keep the readers entertain for a long time.
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
THE SECOND CHANCE by Meghan Quinn is a sad, funny amazing story! I just loved the brothers and can't wait to see what's next for them! The town was filled with fascinating characters. The relationship between Griffin and Ren was sweet and filled with promise.
I received an advanced reader's copy of That Second Chance (Getting Lucky, Book 1) by Meghan Quinn from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I had never read anything by Meghan Quinn before this and had no expectations either way. Happily, I did enjoy her writing style and would gladly read other novels in the future.
I found the novel to be well written and the plot was entertaining. The dialogue between the characters (primary characters as well as secondary) was amusing, too. I found Ren, the female primary character, and Griffin, the male primary character, were both likeable, but enjoyably flawed (you could watch each of them mature throughout the novel and learn from their mistakes, if you will); and both were relateable.
All in all, That Second Chance was a very quick, and fun, read and I look forward to reading future novels in this series.
Okay so I might want to move to Port Snow, or at the least visit the town if it were real. It is a perfect setting for this series, I fell in love with it before I did the characters. I could tell that Griffin was having a hard time trying not to fall in love with Ren. That alone made this story pretty unique. I can't tell you enough how much I loved reading, That Second Chance.
I have heard many good things about Meghan Quinn's books and was so excited to finally read one. I am not sure why I waited so long but I will definitely be reading more from her. I absolutely LOVED That Second Chance. The premise is super unique - the prologue absolutely hooked me. I couldn't put the book down! I adored Griffin and Ren - they had such a fun, natural relationship and it was very realistic to me. I also loved the other Knightly brothers and how involved the Knightly family was. I really enjoyed Meghan's writing style as well. My favorite contemporary romance books are written in first person with a dual POV. I have no complaints about this book. It is definitely in my top 5 books of 2019! This was a great first book in the Getting Lucky series and I cannot wait to read Rogan, Brig, and Reid's stories!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Romance for this free ARC!
