I haven’t read anything by this author previously so wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of overall style. I enjoyed the storytelling which was complicated at times but on the whole very satisfying. I enjoyed the pace and cast of characters and I’d be interested to read more titles by Louth.

This was by far my favourite of the Craig gillard series. I really liked the way we got more of an insight into Craig and Sam throughout.

Unfortunately this one fell a little flat for me. I liked the overall story but I felt there were slightly too many storylines going on at once and there was something about the writing that just didn't work for me either. The dialogue especially reads a bit weird and unnatural.

Another excellent thriller in the mystery series starring DCI Craig Gillard investigating the murder of a hit and run victim. He is called away to Devon to his family there, whilst trying to find out the driver of this unidentified victim.

First time reading a book by this author and would definitely read more. Interesting plot, good pace and great characters. Enjoyable

A body is found on a quiet lane in Exmoor, a victim of a hit and run. He has no ID, no wallet, no phone, and – after being dragged along the road – no recognisable face.

In The Body in the Mist, we are caught up in the mystery with a great storyline and well-crafted characters. Great read indeed!!

I really enjoyed this, my first Nick Louth book. DCI Craig Gillard investigates a body found in a quiet lane in Exmouth, the victim of a vicious hit and run. When Craig finds out that the vehicle appears to belong to his aunt he is forced to intervene and has to face up to his family's dark secrets. A great story with lots of unexpected twists.

An ok read. There some parts that were too long and drawn out, the aunt and court case went on for too long for me

When Craig Gillard and his wife Sam are called to Devon to help with a family emergency they have no idea that grim family secrets will be uncovered. Craig’s family are certainly dysfunctional but the extent to which is quite shocking. Woven through a crime thriller the story is an intriguing read with unexpected moments of humour.

I liked this one very much. Nice to learn some family background, and an unconventional feel to the story.

I have not read any of this series of books before, but that didn't stop me enjoying it (and I'm off to buy the others in the series). I thought the characters were believable and the ending superb. I liked how in court you get to hear both sides (like you would do in a real courtroom). I can't recommend this book highly enough..

This is a fast-paced thriller but I'm not sure a Surrey-based policeman would actually get this much time to be detecting in Devon, even though it is family that calla him away from Surrey to Devon.

At moments it is all a little too madcap adventurous for my taste but overall I found it an enjoyable tale, full of twists and turns and the surprises that come with a dysfunctional family setting.

Book 3 in a series that I am an avid follower of. DCI Craig Gillard is a believably capable investigator who has to face a variety of engaging investigations. Nicely written and at a good pace.

Not as good as book 1 in my view (5 stars), but a good read nonetheless.

A fantastic thriller that keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat — exactly what I've come to expect from Nick Louth! Craig's family is more than a little wacky but personally, I thought that added to the tension and trying to work things out. I enjoyed the ending too.

The Body in the Mist is the third novel in the DCI Craig Gillard series, and it was another roller coaster ride! It reads nicely as a standalone. Recommended.

Never having read any of Louth's books, but encouraged by many positive reviews, I settled down to a “nerve-shredding” read. A yarn guaranteed to keep me reading into the wee hours.

DCI Craig Gillard  is the police officer charged with solving the mystery of a dead body – in a ditch; apparently he's used to this sort of murder as his previous investigations have involved dead bodies in various places assorted places – On the Shore, In the Marsh, In the Snow. My word, this area certainly has an abundance of sloppy murderers who leave bodies lying all over the place.
So what have we here? Aforementioned body in ditch, apparently a hit and run. Blackmail, a sheep-worrying animal, a pervert and fraud to mention but a few. Poor Gillard; maybe this is why he's tramping around Devon rather than Surrey, which is where The Body is. Or maybe his satnav is a bit wonky. Why is his wife trotting along beside him? Has he lost his marble – in Devon maybe?

Poorly written, too many themes and a reader who just can't be bothered to finish this mish-mash. It certainly doesn't encourage me to read any more novels by Mr Louth.

My thanks to Netgalley for a free download.

Most definitely a book that bears more than a passing resemblance to the curate’s egg - good in parts! The Body in the Mist starts well enough with plenty of atmosphere from the first page and the establishment of one of the lead characters, although the author has yet to develop the seamless way that the best writers incorporate dialogue into the unfolding narrative, This solid opening is built on quite convincingly, despite the feeling of an unnecessary contrivance in inserting a second lead character, who just happens to be a DCI from another force and - at the same time - a close relative of the two elderly women who turn out to the the chief suspects in the grisly murder, the aftermath of which forms the opening scenes with which the book opens. However, the reasonably satisfying way in which this police procedural unfolds, albeit with the DCI relative pursuing a somewhat implausible parallel inquiry, is soured for this reader by the unnecessary inclusion of references to child pornography and related abuse. A good rule of thumb is only to include such unpleasant themes when they are essential for the plot development - this reader is unconvinced that this is the case here. The cliche at the end (no plot spoiler here!) didn’t seem to add anything worthwhile.

What at first appears to be a straightforward hit-and-run soon appears a little more complicated and becomes even more so as we delve into this not-so-pleasant family background.
Louth's characters certainly have you wondering whether you should so readily accept people as they appear to be and the conclusion provides a sting in the tail which is rather unfortunate for the central character.
Although sometimes this was a touch predictable 'The Body in the Mist' is a crime drama that combines strong story-line and characters.
