I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t too sure what to expect initially, but I was pleasantly surprised. ALS is a horrid disease, and I deeply feel for the author. The book was well written and easy to follow. I’d definitely suggest it to friends.

Who isn't scared of disease? Dr. Jenni Kleinman Berebitsky hit upon the perfect title for her memoir about how ALS grabbed her and never let go. While at first (and from the first pages), she portrays a woman and her entourage (including a heroic husband and family & friends) who learn not to let ALS completely defeat them. . . .that is the purpose of a debilitating fatal disease--defeat. The end of life is always in sight and the humiliation the disease subjects the sufferer to, as well as the sufferers' support group, is not to be ignored. This group of extraordinary human beings who meet that challenge of disease provide courage to each other, but by the end of the book, the author has to admit that she is no longer a wife, but a patient to her stalwart partner. That too is courageous, calling a spade, a spade. I think everyone should read a book like this at least once a year, so as to remember that others are facing far more difficult conditions than we may be. If our sufferings are equal, then we may consider we are not alone. This is a well-written book.
