This has a (shockingly) believable main character with an interesting plot. I went into this thinking it was going to be more of the average fast paced paranormal/urban fantasy cross blend, but I actually ended up preferring the build up.
If you like urban fantasy where the protagonist is an anti-hero, or are a fan of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong, you will enjoy this book which is the first of a projected series. Laney is the daughter of the Devil...literally. She is a believable character and the plot is interesting without giving into too many tired tropes. A good addition for collections with a strong urban/paranormal/fantasy demand.
I was really expecting this book to be about a bad-ass heroine but it wasn't. I feel like for the first half of the book there was no plot because nothing interesting was happening; Delaney was undercover trying to catch a murderer and then got 2 bodyguards from her father who is the devil. That's what happened for the first half of the book, so I was kind of disappointed at that point, but the story got better. The Devil had to get an identity and it was of a rock star who was supposed to be dead and he is separated from his wife. I was interested to read about the Devil and how he would be portrayed in this book and I'm happy that he was in the book quite often. Delaney lives in the real world and since she has abilities she prefers to live away from her loved ones including her mother and I liked that aspect of the story. She is not evil and her father is not portrayed as evil either and there is nothing mentioned about what the Devil does when he's away.
I was slightly disappointed because I had such high hopes for this book, I wanted to learn more about the Devil and I wanted more action. Cal a man that was sent to guard Delaney and some of their interactions were supposed to be funny but I didn't think it was. At this point I'm not sure if I'm interested in the next book.
I'm a little on the fence about this one. On one hand I liked it, but then again, it didn't blow me away.
I think THE DEVIL'S OWN started off strong, but didn't really keep me in the zone. The heroine starts off as a bad ass which was great, but we don't get a lot of badass moments for her to really shine through. The story had a really interesting premise, but it felt rushed to me. I would have liked a little more development of the story, world and characters.
THE DEVIL'S OWN was a bit on the short side, so I think I will give book two a chance to blow me away like book one didn't do.

I loved this book so much, so much to keep you interested, good twists on good and evil and a great main character. Took some time to pick it’s pace up, but when it does a great read
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This book was beyond amazing!
Since I read the description of this book I’ve been hooked, this is the book I’ve been looking for my whole life
10/10 would recommend
Mysterious, tantalising, and easy to engage with, K.A Fox has written a suspenseful story around the complexity of people commonly referred to as 'evil'. Focusing heavily on the dynamic of the Devil and his Daughter, Fox has convincingly transcended conventional boundaries, to approach a topic of magic, demons, and plot of vengeance, all while constructing a MC who is relate-able, and genuine.
When I saw this listing on NetGalley, I immediately wanted to read it. I'll often select a new book based on a combination review of both the cover and the story synopsis. This time, the cover drew me in before I had even read the synopsis. I'm generally a sucker for anything blue, and this was no exception. The combination of the hazy, almost gloomy, blue background and the super strong female central figure intrigued me. The defiant, "crazy-eyed" expression on her face just added fuel to the fire. Upon reviewing the synopsis, I figured that this story was completely in my wheel-house. Serial Killer + Demons = Awesome. Right? Well, mostly.
As soon as I started reading, I knew that something was off. Focussing on the story was difficult. I had tons of questions that just kept popping up, and none were getting answered by the text. The development of all ancillary characters was super slow while the main character, Delaney, blazed along at a speed that left too much to the imagination. One of my biggest issues was the timeline… or lack thereof. Thirteen chapters in and I was still wondering how much time had elapsed since Delaney lived in Hell. While this may not seem like something to derail a story; without it, I was in limbo. Not only could I not place when the story was happening; but I also couldn't assign an age value to Delaney. Many of the settings and situations she finds herself in depend on this type of classification, so I feel like that was definitely a "ball drop".
So, here I am at the end of this book and I am at a bit of a loss. It could have been so much more. The author is very skilled at painting romantic and steamy scenes, but her action sequences need some more growth and development. Also, the story has great bones but needs quite a bit more fleshing out. I want to find out what happens to Laney next, but I'm apprehensive that the next installation will only be an outline as well. I've decided to keep an eye on the author as this is both her first offering and the first installation in a series. For those looking for a quick light read, I'd recommend this book. However, for all my true fantasy buffs I'd say pass until this series is a bit more… meaty.
Last word: I LOVE Moose. He's my absolute favorite, and I laughed at many of his interactions.
Rock n Roll may be the devil’s music and the devil may be in the details. Here’s what might be termed an urban fantasy and paranormal romance, sure to capture the young adult interest. The devil is a retired rock star and his daughter has discovered she has certain powers as she reaches her teenage years. Unfortunately, the demons of this world won’t leave her in peace and not even the hounds of Hell can keep them away. A quick easy read, although not always fully believable and not really up my alley genre-wise. Many thanks to the publisher for providing a copy for review.
This book was received as an ARC from Acorn Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
Slow start, but great character interaction brings the story right up to speed. This has the makings of a great series!
I just wanted to say thank you to NetGalley and the Author for letting me have a ARC copy. I don't put spoilers in my reviews but I do want to say that it was a nice read and was a well written young adult book. When I first saw it I thought the cover looked great and the the little blurb about it caught my attention. I read this book quickly and it never slowed down. There were a couple back story elements I wish was explained or explored more but that would be my only criticism. The ending was pretty surprising although you kinda got a feeling what was going to happen in general and I feel/hope that this is just the start of the series because I would love to follow Laney down some more adventures.
Overall a fun quick read if you want something that is light on the horror but solid on the story great job K.A. Fox and I hope to see further books in the series.
The Devil's Own is the story of the devil's daughter. Just as I expected, the story is engaging, fun and easy to read. The heroine has powers because she's half human. How do you survive in a human world being so different? I never imagined the devil as a loving father, but it works. Enjoyable overall! Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
K.A. Fox's The Devil's Own was very well written. I found it to be an exhilarating tale following Delaney Murphy, a rockstar/the Devil's daughter, who isolates herself when her magic powers poison those closest to her heart. When she hears about a string of murders, Laney is forced to leave her peaceful life behind to hunt down the murderer and face this danger. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good fantasy mystery.
The Devils Own had such a great synopsis and because of that I had hopes that I would thoroughly enjoy it. Sadly, this was not the case.
The Devils Own had a great hook. It started strong, it started sexy, it started fast. Unfortunately it dropped off after maybe chapter five. From then on it was enjoyable but slow and somewhat predictable. The plot seemed to drift between the mystery threat to focusing on small sub-adventures that could have been really interesting. The exception to this would be lovable Callum.
His character was cute and refreshing. He brought some of that mystery back into the plot. I just found that it seems K.A Fox was just using him to prolong the story and maybe add some strength back into it larger plot point. But, the entire build up of the story was resolved without him and it was solved in less than two pages.
The story follows the perspective of Delaney, a Hound, a sidekick, and a detective as they try and work through an odd relationship and well Hell and demons, and the big guy down stairs. The Devil himself. Now the Devil was an interesting touch. I’ve never read a novel with that kind of character arc before. Daughter of a mournful Devil is definitely new.
This book is a great vacation read however, right after finishing this book I’m not really affected by the end. It’s a good foundation for another book, I just feel like it could have been condensed and maybe used a good part one to one book instead of a whole book on it’s own. Nothing happened in The Devils Own that had my heart racing or staying up late at night to finish it. Which is unfortunate because it started to strong and the cover makes it look so dark and mysterious.
The Devil's Own is wonderful, I stumbled upon it and I am so glad I did. The story centers on Delaney who happens to be half-human and half-supernatural and did I mention she's the Devil's Daughter. The Devil is a famous (now presumed dead) rockstar name Angus and that is just one of the interesting details about this book.
None of the characters are how I would expect them to be. Delaney is such a good person who cares about people with her whole heart. She has so much power and is terrified that she will hurt someone so she lives in seclusion. She is so young with this crazy power and the only people she sees semi-regularly is her father and her uncle Newt. Delaney may be smart, caring, and strong but she is also, sassy, brave, stubborn and lonely. She is such a good character, I connected to her right away and I am totally invested into what happens to her.
It's time to talk about the Devil, Angus is not a bad a person. He may be the Devil and I am sure that he has some monstrous qualities (I mean the dude has to run Hell) but he is such a doting dad. Delaney is his world and he would do anything for her and to protect her. Also he is a famous rockstar, who toured the world, so Angus might be a little cool too.
One of my favorite characters is Callum who was sent by Angus to protect Delaney. Callum is a mystery, he is supernatural but I have no idea what type, he is gorgeous, mischievous, he reads romance novels, can handle a sword and is incredible sweet. If there is going to be any romance Cal is the person I choose, hell I want him for myself. The relationship between the Cal and Delaney is still new but I hope there is something there.
The Devil's Own was highly entertaining and I could not put it down. I loved the characters and the world, it was full of action, drama, mystery and has a main character that is smart strong and confident. From the way the story ended it seems like The Devil's Own is the first book in a series or at least a duology and I can't wait for the next book.
An ARC was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
I was intrigued by the premise of this book! The writing was pretty good, but the execution of the plot fell short for me.
The characters were quite interesting but I like that they needed to be developed more for me to be invested in their stories. I feel like the relationships between the characters also needed to be developed more so things seemed more natural. I felt like the characters had no reason to do what they did. Personally, for me, I like a more character driven story and this one didn't live up to my expectations.
Also, I felt like sometimes the plot had no explanation and sometimes it seemed like the characters had no reason to do what they did. I felt like the characterization and plotline could have been worked on more,
However, overall the writing was good and the premise was quite interesting.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. It's well written, has a good pace without feeling rushed, and (although it seems like the start to a series) has its own story arc. The characters and world building were intriguing, but still have plenty of room for growth in future installments.
This modern tale involving the devil comes from a different angle than many others I've read. The protagonist both accepts and despises/ fears her relationship with the devil and its complications. I look forward to reading more of this tale to see how she copes.
2.5 stars to The Devil's Own. While I did really enjoy the premise of this book, and the writing overall was quite good the execution fell a little flat for me. The characters each had the foundations of being really intriguing, but unfortunately they really needed to be developed more, and more time and attention needed to be spent developing the relationship between the characters so that things seemed more natural and events didn't seem as drastic. Additionally the plot line needed work to make it tighter and pull the events together. The pacing was off at times, and certain events seemed like they came out of nowhere or had no explanation, which made the plot line difficult to follow. Overall, I still think that this author has a lot of potential, and I will be keeping an eye out for her future works. Despite its flaws, The Devil's Own was still a good read and I am intrigued by Delaney's world. The book could easily have been a 3-4 read if more time had been spent reviewing and plotting to make the story flow better and the plot line more cohesive.
The Devil’s Own
K.N. Fox
The Devil’s Own by K.N. Fox is an imaginative concept for a book.
Delaney Murphy is a Daughter of a deceased Rock Legend, who happens to be the Devil himself. Aka ..Angus .
Delaney (Laney) struggles with the development of her powers and the choices she will make concerning right and wrong. Add a little romance and you have the makings of a great book, with interesting world building.
Strong female heroine along with sub characters. This is a creative story that will definitely keep you engaged.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book. The story was a bit of a different take on the Devil having a child than is usually written, and it was written in a very entertaining manner. The characters were very likeable, even the Devil, and the world building was subtle, since it takes place in our world, our Earth, our time, yet encompasses fantasy and magic that we are unlikely to encounter in the real world. I like it when an author can take a small midwest town and turn it into someplace someone magical can live, undetected, plying her trade or exercising her magic without anyone being the wiser.
The storyline is at first a bit slow, but moves forward fairly quickly, which helped to hold my interest.. It turned out to be a fast read and I am hooked enough to be looking forward to the second book in the series. As a first novel I was surprised at how well it was written. It showed a great deal of work, excellent editing, and definite attention to detail.
I did, however, find Torren to be a little too quickly fleshed out. I felt the author needed to go a bit deeper into detail so we don't see it as such a quick, unbelievable occurrence (I don't want to put any spoilers in here so you'll have to read it to know what I mean). Even when we aren't told much about some of the characters like Callum, they are fleshed out enough for us to connect with them, inspiring an interest that goes deep enough to make us anxious to find out more. That isn't easy to do when little information is given, yet we have an inkling that there is much more to learn. That was very well done.
All in all, a very very good first novel. Definitely looking forward to book two.
