I selected this title based on the cover and the description but ultimately, decided I wanted to read it because the premise was different and enticing.

Delaney Murphy is the Devil's daughter and she has inherited his powers and abilities. But these powers come with a cost, hurting people who are close to her. The book description gives the impression that you're going to have to read about Laney's choice, "to protect the world from the worst she can do" or be "alone, in a place where she can control the urge to give in to the magic living within her." Then following up with that choice, deciding whether or not to help do good with her magic at the cost of potentially herself. However, I found that this is mostly a back story that leads you into the main structure of the book itself, which deals with what happens after she makes those choices and helps find the murderer.

I enjoyed this book. I loved the relationships between Laney and her father, Cal, and Moose. Miss Tilly is an interesting character that I don't think we know or learn nearly enough about to comprehend her importance to the town or the story line (in the future as well?). It would have helped to have had a better understanding of why there was such trust and magical relations between Laney and Miss Tilly. There were several situations, conversations or characters that relied on previous knowledge or backstory that, as a reader, I didn't have. The potential budding romance between Laney and Cal was a nice addition to the plot structure, even though it seemed to come out of nowhere. I look forward to reading more about them and getting to learn about Cal and his past a little more.

The Devil’s Own is a fast, fun and extremely original take on the “spawn of Satan” or should I say rock star…

Delaney is the Devil’s daughter whose life sucking, and siren abilities have driven her into self-isolation.

Deciding to take on a demonic serial killer brings Delaney to the attention of some people that cause some major friction between her and her father.

Fearing for Delaney’s safety, her father sends a few hell powered protectors to watch over Delaney while he deals with trouble in hell.

I found The Devil’s Own a really great start to a very engaging new storyline and characters that I’d like to explore more.

I received this ARC copy of The Devil's Own from Acorn Publishing. This is my honest and voluntary review. The Devil's Own is set for publication March 9, 2019.

Basic Premise:
Delaney Murphy is the daughter of deceased rock legend...who also happens to be the Devil himself. Half human and half...not, Delaney possess powers that she hasn’t quite learned to master yet and certainly doesn’t want. She’s spent two years in hell trying to overcome her father’s gifts, but is still wrought with guilt over what could be. When her father sends guardians to protect her from what’s coming, she has to battle not only the evil foretold, but also her own inner demons.

The Good:
Delaney is a very relatable protagonist, she has her own quirks that I immediately related to and tries to live her life by doing what she thinks is right, regardless of the consequences. Fox built an interesting world that really drew me in as a reader and left me wanting more.

The Challening:
The timeline. This was extremely confusing to me and something that kept popping up in my mind and kept me from enjoying the book - how old is Delaney?? From what I gathered, she left for Hell when she was 16. She spent two years in Hell and clearly has been above for an undetermined amount of time. Perhaps I missed it, but I’m still not sure how old she’s supposed to be. Delaney is NOT a realistic 18 year old. She doesn’t act like a teenage and to me, the other characters (including both love interests) are way too old to be into an 18 year old. Additionally, someone her own age shows up and she calls him a man. When I was 18 I certainly didn’t think of my male peers as men, so I’m still confused on how old she is.

The ending. This is clearly meant to be a series, because Fox left us hanging at the end, unable to provide a full resolution. I felt like the arc of climax to resolution was just too flat. Maybe too much time was spent on building up to the climax and building the world, but it just seemed to wrap up too tidily and easily. I expected more - more action, more drama, more planning, more plotting, more questioning, more romancing. More of basically everything.

The romance. I struggled with deciding on whether to put this in the The Good section or here, but ultimately it landed here. I liked the romance...kind of. There are two love interests...maybe. As a reader, I wasn’t sure if one of the men was a viable candidate, but Fox didn’t rule him out immediately. To be honest, I felt like this character was contrived mostly to make Delaney feel guilty and otherwise didn’t serve any purpose. However, I am rooting for the other love interest and hope that book 2 will give us more of them.

Overall, I’d give this book a solid 3.5 stars. I wish there had been more build up at the climax and more resolution at the end and also more of the romance, however Fox did an excellent job building this world and I’m excited for the next book in the series!

This was a bit of a letdown for me. Female MC finds out she's the Devil's daughter and tries to use her powers to stop a string of murders. Like come on! This sounds so badass! Sadly, it just didn't reel me in. I was 20% in and just wasn't getting the vibe I was hoping for. I realized as I kept reading that I wasn't really paying attention because i was losing interest. It just didn't capture me even though I LOVED the synopsis of this. I found it to be too slow paced, only giving me some sparks of interest whenever some interesting dialogue or action happened. This could have been so much better, but it just wasn't it for me. Others may love it more than me, and that's usually what I expect. Was just hoping for it to be a bit more fast paced and a bit more actiony like the synopsis led me to believe.

This was another page turner that I could not put down. The irony of this book attracted me most to it. The daughter of the devil doing good deeds and protecting the people that she loves. Every page got better and better with a new twist and turn at every corner, leaving Laney to make decisions that could impact the rest of her life and/or basically destroy it. The plot and concept were beautifully executed and the language presented throughout the book pulled you in immediately feeling like you were transported right into the book along with Laney being with her every step of the way.

We will consider adding this title to our YFantasy collection at the library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

I received this book from Netgalley. It was fun and if you didn’t think about the plot too much then it was a great read. I didn’t really understand why it was so necessary that the protagonist go off by herself and no explanation is given. It also felt like a lot was brushed over in terms of world building. I also felt the protagonist was a bit self-absorbed and woe-is-me, imagine a red-headed Elena Gilbert type character. 100% self righteous and uppity.

I’d probably the read the next one if it came out fairly quickly and I was bored - otherwise this is quite forgettable in a sea of thousands of YA novels. It reminded me a little of the demon trapper series by Jana Oliver except her books are better, harsh, but this series is just starting out and has plenty of time to grow - fingers crossed it does.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this book. This is definitely the first in a series leaving you with more questions than answers, but it's a fun easy read. The character origins and magic in this urban fantasy aren't fully explained, which only adds to the mystery that'll hopefully be uncovered in the next book. The chemistry between Cal and Laney is sweet and believable, but am worried it'll turn into an uncomfortable triangle at some point. That trope seems to get overdone in Teen YA.
Fast paced and entertaining, I look forward to the next book.

This book felt like the outline of something really good. It had the features of an interesting story-- a badass MC, a cute dog, magic--but something was missing. The plot seemed more about the characters getting used to each other than about actually solving their problems. I also think some things were too convenient (Angus, Miss Tilly, it'd all a bit deus ex machina). The book was fine, and it was written well enough, but it's nothing special. I was left with many questions about the characters and world. Though one of the main characters is the devil, don't expect any theology or deep rumination so on free will or anything. The demons seem separate from the Devil, though his Hell Hounds can be controlled. There's also a kind of love triangle that didn't really do anything for me. And, what even is Callum? Don't expect the book to be all crime-fighting-y like the beginning. I did and was disappointed. It's an easy, light read with a breezy non-plot.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me a copy.

Did I like it? Sure, it's been an entertaining distraction the last few days.

Would I read it again? No--it seems to lack the inexplicable pizzazz I associate with books I want to read repeatedly.

Biggest faults? The whole book is one giant, freaking plothole. I'm thirty pages from the end and there is still no satisfactory explanation to why Angus can't control his demons. No hints of rebellion, no smartass creature who thinks he knows better than Master, nothing. In fact, I have a really hard time believing he's THE Devil, the way he seems to be so underpowered in this book.

And for someone who swears he cares for his daughter every time he sees her, Angus seems remarkably disengaged. None of the usual "I promise I'll get to the bottom of this" or "I think I have some leads". Some readers might think that sort of dialog is trite; but without it, it appears that Angus just doesn't give a damn (if you'll excuse the pun). He just adds more protection, reminds Laney that she'd be safer in Hell...and that's about it.

Oh well. Thanks to NetGalley for a halfway decent read, at any rate.

I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would unfortunately. I tried really hard to get into it and it was just not happening for me. The synopsis was great I just didn't care for it. Love the cover as well.

A very engaging read and I love the fact that it was something a little bit different. A nice and easy read that will transport you to another world. There were fantastic little details that backed up this story and made it seem real. Not an easy thing to accomplish but this author has managed to do it with flair. A brilliant read.
