The Raven Boys is a wonderful start to a magical series. Stiefvater has such a beautiful style of writing, almost lyrical. and has created unique characters that draw you in. The world building is amazing, and she makes it easy to blur the line between real and fantasy. Loved it and highly recommend to all!
I'm cleaning out my shelf on here and realized I haven't reviewed this book. While I read it a long time ago, it has still stuck with me a bit. I actually ended up listening to the audiobook version when it was released. I remember really enjoying that production and fascinating story. Thank you for the access to this book!
Magical realism is pretty hit or miss with me. While I really loved our characters and the plot of our MC "prophecy" I just didn't enjoy the plot of finding the lost king & his treasure. Overall, it was interesting and I will try out book 2.
One of my all time favorite books, this author never disappoints. This book was one that has stayed with me over the years. I am now just looking back on some of these books and think that this one has to be added to my permanent library.
The Raven Boys is a strong start to a magical series. Maggie Stiefvater has created such unique characters that draw you in and invite you to fall in love with each and every one of them. Almost even more so than her character descriptions is the creation of her setting. She brought so many different places to life from Cabeswater, Blue's house and Gansey's home with Ronan and Noah. The whole story is just filled with magic, and not just that of the ley lines and Glendower. Loved it and highly recommend to all!
4.5 out of 5 stars!
Kind of confusing (hard to follow), but a very enjoyable read.
I am a teen librarian and I read a lot of books, in and out of my wheelhouse, so I can recommend good books to all who ask . I don’t think I care for Maggie’s style of writing. Way back I didn’t mind Shiver or Linger, hated Scorpio Races-and had to read it twice (once for a book discussion), indifferent to All the Crooked Saints.
I see teens who adore Maggie, and the Raven Boys series, but it is just not for me.
I don’t think I care for her style of writing, her pacing, her actual dialogue between characters. This was another magical realism type book and I wanted to give it a chance.
Summary
The Raven Boys isn't what you expect at least it wasn't what I expected. It's YA, but doesn't really remind me of The Wolves of Mercy Falls which is what I'm familiar with by Stiefvater. This one is a really great adventure and interesting story. I found myself pretty hooked after I got into the idea of ley lines and alternate worlds of sorts.
Following Blue and the Raven Boys through this journey was great. Often heart wrenching, but still enjoyable. I really don't think the description of the book really explains it enough honestly. The story really revolves around the boys and Blue discovering something pretty crazy happening around them and I kind of think I realize why it's not more descriptive. I feel like I would literally be spoiling this entire story if I gave too much away.
I don't love Gansey currently. Let's call it what it is. He's annoying and not the best character yet. He's willing in a lot of ways to sacrifice his friends happiness for his quest. Though he also wants to collect his friends into one place so he can protect them. Blue is expected awkward beautiful girl. We got those YA tropes in full force, but I'm still left feeling curious enough to read book two and probably finish the whole series.
I think I need to go dig up the book 2 arc I have as well. Y'all seriously the ARC problem is bad sometimes. I will let things sit forever and realize I never got to them.
Final Thoughts
4/5 stars for interesting plot ideas and a really great group of kids to follow through the story.
I'll keep reading the series and check back in soon with the rest of my thoughts.
Amazing! I'm so glad I gave this another go!!
It took three attempts but I finally got myself hooked enough that I had to keep going until I had finished. I listened to this mostly on audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience.
Will Patton did a wonderful job as a narrator, 5 out of 5 stars as far as narration goes. Perfect diction, pacing, no irritating tics, each character's voice was unique and clearly theirs.
I've noticed Stiefvater seems to hit the lottery when it comes to narrators for her books. The Scorpio Races on audiobook is still one of my favorite audiobooks of all time!
As for the book, the first hundred pages as everyone has already mentioned is really the turning point. Once Blue meets the boys things get interesting a stay interesting right until the very end.
I love each of the characters and their relationships with one another, the strong bonds of friendship and family is so so nice. Personally, I find this author brilliant. She can weave a captivating story, her writing fluid, natural, organic.
With this story, I have added Stiefvater to my auto-buy list. I will read/listen to everything she puts out.
Sorry, requested this book but didn't get around to reading it.
