This is the 2nd book I’ve read by Hollie Overton and it won’t be the last. I’m always up for a family drama story. This did not disappoint. Hollie tackles many issues that will really get you thinking. This book grabbed my attention and kept it. I can’t wait to see what Hollie comes out with next!
I didn't like this book and let me tell you why..I had such high hopes when I saw this book because from what I saw of reviews of this authors previous books they were good so I was excited, intrigued, anxious even. maybe I set the bar too high because I didn't get and to be honest I could not finish the book. There was too many characters that really had nothing to do with the storyline, so what was the point. We had too much inner dialogue that had me shaking my head and honestly just bored. And just too much stuff, I wont give it a 2 because I mean it wasn't that bad, but it was def not higher and as I mentioned I just couldn;t finish.
This is my second Hollie Overton book and i loved it. How she included personal details only made it more special This book was better than The Walls. 👍
Ash is a runaway teen who use to live on the streets. She now lives with Becca, her foster mom. Their relationship was rocky when Becca first took Ash in but now they are close and Becca wants to adopt Ash and she is excited to finally have a mother.
Nate was the only person who Ash could depend on when Ash lived on the streets. Now he needs help. Nate has gotten in with the wrong crowd, possibly a murderer so she has to protect Becca as well. She has to runaway from her new life in order to protect the one person she cared for from her old life.
This was a really good book. I totally enjoyed it. I loved how Becca really loved Ash even though she didn't always prove herself trustworthy.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this in advance in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a great psychological thriller, as it was a fast and enjoyable read. The action and suspense was plentiful, but I felt that the author tried to tackle too many issues in this book, which took a little bit of enjoyment away for me. Otherwise, it was a great read!
Heartbreaking and heart warming story that gives you a reason to hope. Well-written characters that really make you feel the emotions they are going through and make you rally behind those who deserve it and hope in your heart that karma gets those that deserve the bad kind.
Very fast paced and thrilling! The story is told from different characters and I love that! It keeps the suspense coming! Definitely alot of twists and turns! This book has just made Holly Overton my top five favorite authors!!
I loved this book - so many emotions ripped through the pages -
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review -
Becca fosters Ash, a struggling teen who she hopes to adopt after struggling with infertility.
Ash loves Becca and wants a home with her but she still loves Nate and is drawn into his dangerous world - the Tribe
As Ash realizes her mistakes and tries to pull away Mo seeks vengeance.
Can Becca save Ash?
Can they finally become a family?
I’m still collecting my thoughts on the new book, Runaway by Hollie Overton. It does take more effort to read than her first book, Baby Doll, which is just a book you can finish in one sitting. However, once I got into the story, I found myself sucked into this domestic family drama.
Ash is the 16 year old foster daughter of Dr. Rebecca (Becca) Ortiz. While Ash has been through a lot in her 16 years, she is a difficult and flawed teen who, as a reader is hard to connect with. Perhaps it’s more due to the fact that I’m a mom to three teens, but her sneaking out to see her homeless boyfriend, while stealing from and lying to the only person who has ever cared about her, made dislikable.
The book really takes a shift after around the 30% mark, with the focus turning to Becca. Becca also has demons in her past, as she suffers through the loss of her brother, mentally ill clientele, infertility, and a cheating ex-husband. As Becca realizes that Ash has run away with her boyfriend (whom she didn’t know she was seeing), the story takes another turn when both teens are faced with mortal danger of a deranged homeless “mom”, who demands 100% loyalty.
The storyline is completely unique, and incomparable to anything I’ve read in the past. You will find yourself irritated at some of the stupid moves that some of the characters make, while still enthralled in their storylines. The book’s pace and drama increases as you go, so definitely do not give up after a few chapters. This is a solid read at four stars.
*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my review copy via NetGalley.
Holle Overton has a way of crafting good psychological thrillers . This was a good one with flawed characters but a good plot.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book
Becca is a forensic psychologist for the LAPD whose foster daughter Ash has gone missing and she's determine to find her. This is the basic storyline but Overton has surrounded the bones with some interesting twists. Ash, who was abused as a child and living on the streets when she met Becca, hasn't quit her relationship with Nick, a homeless boy she bonded with. Nick, unfortunately, is part of the Tribe, a cult like group run by a dangerous and sick man. Becca's got her own problems (she really could use some help) but she's a fierce force. Thanks to net galley for the ARC. Although some of this is completely unrealistic it's a fast paced read.
Another homerun from this amazing author. Just like her other books I devoured this in one sitting. Hollie Overton has a true gift and I look forward to reading everything she has to offer. Read this one and her other 2 books immediately!
Really enjoyed this novel. The writing flowed and the characters were depicted very well. Couldn't wait to find out what happens next.
Thanks Netgalley, Redhook Books, and author Hollie Overton for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was too predictable.. Characters were not very likeable and the story was a bit slow.
This was a story of a foster mom going all out to save her daughter. Combined with that was a lot of baggage for most of the characters. It was a bit overwhelming. Despite that, the characters in the present seemed a bit one dimensional: Becca, the mom, would do anything to save Ash. Ash, the daughter, would do anything to be with Nate. Nate, the homeless boyfriend, would do anything for Ash or for his family, The Tribe, etc. Maybe there were too many characters that were trying to be prominent and since we needed all their back stories, we didn't have time to be with them in the present? Or maybe they just were so locked up in that past that they didn't have anything to offer us in the present? Neither makes for an outstanding read. I spent most of the book distracted by things that didn't make sense or by actions that seemed a bit unbelievable. This push to make the story that much more action packed and thrilling and suspenseful pushed it beyond my threshold to accept that things can miraculously go someone's way in fiction. The ending did give me a good hand wringing chuckle but it was not enough to overcome my lack of engagement with the rest of the story. If you don't need to look too deeply at the mechanics of a story, this would be a good read.
This was another hit by the author. An interesting and fun read. However, I did find the main character, Becca, to have few redeeming qualities. In adddition, I found the ending to be too fairytale 'nice'. This is a book which I would recommend to all. I will be looking forward to the author's next hit.
A solid family drama that upon thought provoking issues.
Becca is determined to be the perfect mother to her foster child Ash.
Ash has living on the streets and that kind of life seems to be haunting her despite Becca's best effort.
But Becca is a fighter and would willingly sacrifice her life to protect Ash.
An engrossing read with a likable and strong willed female lead, highly recommended.

Becca is a forensic pathologist who decide to foster Ash she vow to love and show Ash that she is worth it.
Ash is a runway she ran when her mother continue to abuse her and went to LA where she met Nate her boyfriend even though she turn away from the streets and she has a same place she still can't turn her back on Nate.
Ash get close to Nate and his family that called The Tribe she learns that if you step out of line you get punish not a warning but you died and she learns this by accident when she sees Vic beating Eli to pump when she tried to intervene Nate stops her and runs from him.
Becca works hard and she knows something is bothering Ash as Ash debate wether to tell Becca what's going on Nate convince her to talk to Mo who I say is the leader and thinks she the mother of the group when explain why they did what they did to Eli Ash is still conflicted about what to do and when Lesley who in the group tells her to leave and never look back it's sad what happen to her I really wish Ash convince her to leave too.
Ash and Nate decide to go on the run to get away from Mo and when Becca wakes up to find Ash gone along with their dog she doesn't understand why Ash will run when they decide to be a family permanently.
I like that Becca does everything in her power to get her daughter back after learning what Ash been going through that she risk her life job her friendships to get back her daughter.
I knew Mo was a sociopath that she believes what she saying that she was trying to save these kids but doing so she became a child killer and it was sad when Nate had snapped to the point that he shot Mo and was going to kill himself.
I like Raya and how she knows she sick but can take care of herself and I like that she was there for Becca and it's sad that her mother turn her back on her but I like that Becca isn't going to abandon her and she won't with Nate either and I'm happy Ash and Becca got their happy ending.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read The Runaway in exchange for my honest review.
This is my second book by Hollie Overton and I wasn't disappointed. It was refreshing to read a book with a strong female leads. I enjoyed how different the story line was and enjoyed it all the way to the end. I do wish a little more time was spent with the Tribe to get a better engage with the members and see what all really happened within the Tribe. I hope there is a second book to The Runaway! I feel there are plenty of things that can be expanded on from the way the story ended.
Thank you to NetGalley, Hollie Overton and Redhook books for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review.
LAPD forensic psychologist Becca agrees to foster teenage runaway Ash, she knows that she will love and protect her as if she was her own. Ash may have turned away from her old life in the streets, but there is still one person that she can’t stand to lose. He is about to drag her back into her old world and no one is safe. How far will Becca go to save her daughter?
I loved how different the story line was to this novel and how different Becca and Ash were from one another and from the usual characters I experience. I really enjoyed the entire story and how one woman took it upon herself to try and “save” these other runaways. This story is entirely engrossing and you don’t want to put it down because you need to know what is going to happen to Ash and the Tribe. This book also made me so sad because it is totally true that it would be easy to make children trust you and so easy for someone to destroy their lives. Becca broke my heart in this novel many times; how much she went through and how much she loves her daughter was just perfect. This novel is the perfect mix of thrilling and heart wrenching!
