A nicely twisty procedural that's great with the Minnesota (and Monkeewrench) atmospherics. This latest in the series might be most appreciated by those who have read the earlier books because there are a lot of characters. But it's complex and fun. Thanks to Netgalley for the ArC.
I am a fan of P.J. Tracy’s Detective Margaret Nolan series and wanted to try this one from the writing team’s Monkeewrench series. It has been on my TBR for a while.
Perhaps it is because I am coming to this, the tenth in the series, as my first one, but I just couldn’t engage with it. The plot was complex and far reaching. While I enjoyed some of the characters, there were some pretty despicable players as well. I wasn’t fond of the story or dialog. It is certainly atmospheric; I could feel the Minnesota cold.
I’m sorry I came so late to this series, perhaps I would have gotten more out of this book had I read some of the earlier installments.
I've tried to read this book a few times and it doesn't seem to stick with me. I definitely believe this is a case of the reader and not the book.
I love this series!
I picked this book up from my local library and loved it.
I do think you should read the books in order. It is a great series and with the back story, you can get into the books much easier.
Definitely a series I recommend!
I was not a big fan of this one. It was a drag for me to read and was very predictable. I can see why others would enjoy it, it just fell flat for me.
A mystery at its best. Ice Cold Heart is about Minneapolis detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth as they join Grace MacBride and Monkeewrench to uncover a dark and ugly conspiracy that reaches deep into the safety of homes.
Soon the idyllic winter has turned gruesome as a body is found in a friend's vacant house. Riveting and engrossing!
Loved this book as I did all of the series. The characters, the mysteries, and the combination of humor and crime really appeals to me. These books stand apart from other mysteries, and I wish the series would go on for many years, although I know it will not. I highly recommend this book and the series to anyone who likes mysteries that don't go anywhere near the mystery formula.
P J Tracey is an author that I found on NetGalley. There is a twist in every novel and it's always shocking. I can't wait to read every single one of her/his books.
This was my first Monkeewrench novel and while I’m sure reading the earlier books would have assisted in knowing the relationships and background of the main characters it didn’t take away from the story.
The book was well written but definitely has trigger warnings for some.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.
I enjoyed returning to the Monkeewrench/Twin cities world book 10 Ice Cold Heart. Following parallel investigations between detectives Gino and Magozzi and the team at Monkeewrench software company that specialise in designing computer anti-virus protection programs and with their eclectic skill base .help the police find out anything and everything a person may not want you to know. I enjoyed the rapport between all the characters and the many dark twists and turns that eventually lead you to the killer. An unputdownable read. I have read more of the series but out of order. They work as a stand alone but you will benefit from reading them from the start as the characters evolve and start to prosper in their own unique way.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin for my ARC ebook.
P.J. Tracy knows Minnesota cold. This writing team makes cold a serious character in the story. Yes, I live in Florida and the temperature was in the 80's when I read the book, but I froze following the detectives around Minnesota. The mystery includes abduction, messy murder, high tech computer skills, and lots of misdirection. It is a good read and a challenging mystery.
Unfortunately I didn’t love this one as much as I was hoping to. I liked the idea behind it and the storyline, but it fell flat for me. I can see why some people love this one, but it just wasn’t for me.
A great return to form for PJ Tracey. A twisty thriller, brilliant setting, and good to see the development of familiar characters.
I had a hard time getting into this book but once I did - I couldn't put it down. I loved the premise and thought it was a great read.
The Monkeewrench crew is back along with Detectives Rolseth and Magoozi. I have loved this series from the beginning. The characters are great and the plot will keep you turning pages. This is part of a series but could be read as a stand alone. I look forward to the next book in this series. Thank you to net galley for a copy.
Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Ice Cold Heart. I voluntarily chose to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Though the winter is bitterly cold in Minnesota, a brutal murder leads to an investigation that puts Detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth hot on the heels of a killer. When a puzzling set of clues brings Grace MacBride and her computer genius partners in Monkeewrench Software in on the case, will their own project have a connection that no one saw coming?
There was something missing from Ice Cold Heart, though all of the elements were there. The plot itself was formulaic, with the characterization largely stagnant except for Roadrunner. There were distinct circles of plot, which start to overlap as the book continues. This converging of story lines happened too late, as I had already lost interest in the novel. Although the case was different, the novel was very similar to the ones that came before. Ice Cold Heart was a quick read, but not one I would recommend to others.
Before I begin, let me admit that I haven't read any of the earlier books in this series. I was attracted by the intriguing description and the fact that I love stories set in The Twin Cities - especially ones that reflect the bitter cold and quirky nature of people who live there. I think it was Fargo that first ignited my interest and I can tell you I wasn't disappointed.
This is a twisty turny story of Detectives Gino and Magozzi tracking down a serial killer. At the same time there's a team called Monkeewrench who are IT geniuses. The story is rich with characters and frozen settings and will appeal to anyone who loves police procedurals and cleverly crafted plots. 5 stars from me.
Great storyline, great characters and interesting plot. I loved reading this one and will read more by this author! Thanks for the advanced copy Netgalley
Ice Cold Heart by PJ Tracy is a Monkeewrench novel. Leo, Gino and Grace are trying to uncover the a dark and ugly conspiracy. The dog days of winter are keeping everyone inside. It seems it's even too cold for murder. Well that is until it's not. Leo and Gino are called to the scene of a cold blooded murder. The victim Kelly Ramage is found in a friends vacant home. The investigation leads Leo and Gino to the art gallery Kelly worked at...a dead end. Although the artwork is dark...and deadly. Could the artwork be a lead? As Leo and Gino delve deeper and deeper into this murder they discover conspiracies. Is Kelly the only one to die? Was she the first? or only one in a series? Read Ice Cold Heart by PJ Tracy!
I’m fairly new to this series, having read only the previous book The Guilty Dead. This latest release is book 10 In the very popular Monkeewrench series.
More often than not, the characters themselves can carry a book. Even when the story-line may not grab you, a creative author can cleverly develop a cast you will be immediately drawn to!
