I love this author. I am so glad she has continued this series. I love all of the characters. This book was full of suspense. I highly recommend this book!
This was my first P.J. Tracy book but it won't be the last. The story engaged me from the very start and kept me enthralled until the very end.
The weather and the case chill Detectives Magozzi and Rolseth to their core, and as the tension mounts they know neither is ready to break. There were a number of different crimes being investigated all of which seemed very different to begin with but gradually the realisation that there was a link brought all the different teams together. The Monkeewrench side was detailed but not to the point of confusion, instead I found it fascinating. The humour was first class, gallows of course, but clever and actually funny.
The characters were engaging, and although there seemed to be quite a lot of them to start with they all fell into place and were all necessary for the story to work so well. There was also just enough off the job detail to make the two main detectives even more personable than they were when working together.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys first class mystery writing, it's one of the best books I've read this year.
I could not believe my luck when this book popped up on NetGalley, and even more astonished when the publisher provided me with a copy. Many thanks!
I adore this series. The characters, the tech (which, is basically magic to me, but described in a very relatable way), the setting - it's all great. The previous book was not quite a sharp, but Ice Cold Heart is a cracker. The elements of this book are so interesting and weave together beautifully for a satisfying conclusion.
Highly recommended!
Too much violence. Not my type of book. Didn't get very far as it totally turned me off.
Thanks NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
Finding this book in a browse was like coming across an old friend you haven’t seen for a while. The Monkeewrench crew are several books older now (how did I miss that!) but the book is as crisp and crackling as the first two I read. Some wisecracking, good old fashioned adventure and cop procedural and an intriguing meld of serial killer and Balkans conflict haunting the present.
The title of this outstanding book does not only describe January in Minnesota, but the heart of a depraved, unbelievably evil monster and the Monkeewrench gang is in the thick of it once again.
This investigation is like the spokes of a wheel, going off in different directions but ultimately, to the surprise of the investigators, meeting in the middle for an explosive ending that will keep you on the edge of your seat as the group hunts down a killer with the darkest of souls.
Highly recommended!
I have loved the Monkeywrench crew from the very first book and they just keep getting better. This book grabbed me from the opening page and held me all the way until the end. I think it takes a talented author/s to keep recurring characters alive and fresh and P J Tracy has succeeded at that. While it would be helpful to read these in something close to order, it's not necessary and after reading this one you will feel like you already know the characters....and love them! Great mystery, well plotted and fast paced.. Worth your time! Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
Loved it! Very fast paced , burning through the pages to see what happens next. I like the Monkey wrench characters and their camaraderie, not to mention all their cool computer skills. I also enjoyed Leo and Gino. It's not easy being a cop but they are committed, and to hell with being PC, sometimes things are just wrong. I liked the setting of it being brutally cold in the deep of winter. It adds to horror of the crimes. The murder in this book was hard to take. I'am glad it was just fiction, because it was truly terrible. Great read, with lots of intrigue, humor, and friendship.
I love the monkeywrench novels. However, the last couple felt a little formulaic. Ice Cold Heart brought me back to the old days when I loved the characters and the story. This book was really entertaining.
The mystery was really interesting, and the I loved the characters development. Again, I felt part of the monkeewrench family, like I did in the earlier books in this series. And I loved that Roadrunner was getting a story of his own.
You don't have to read the earlier books, but I recommend it. It will further enhance your reading pleasure with this book.
Thank you to net gallery for an early copy of this book. However, that did not impact my review.
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an unbiased review. This
latest entry in the Monkeewrench series will be enjoyed by fans of the series. The mystery is curious and engaging, and best of all for long time fans, Roadrunner meets a possible romantic interest. Other than that, there isn't quite enough of the Monkeewrench crew in the story. We spend much more time with the cops.
4 and 1 / 2 stars
Detectives Leo Magozzi and his partner Gino Rolseth are suffering through another frigid Minnesota winter. They haven't had a homicide in a month.
This changes when they are called to the scene of a murder. The woman, Kelly Ramage, was killed in one of her friends' home. She was last seen at an art gallery, so Leo and Gino trudge over to the gallery. What they see there is disturbing and shocking. On the surface the gallery has little to do with Kelly's murder, but the images the detectives see there are disturbing. They wonder if the art could have incited someone to commit murder. The art work is very like the murder scene.
Leo and Gino soon discover more murders that have the bondage element that Kelly's scene has. The killer has apparently been at his killing “game” for longer than the police feared. With the help of the Monkeewrench crew, they learn about their perpetrator's connections. He has cut a broad swath across the globe with his crimes.
This book is very well written and plotted. The transitions are smooth and nearly flawless. This is a fantastic police procedural partnered with the speed and power of computer technology. I enjoyed learning more about all of the characters and I liked learning more about Roadrunner's past. As terrible as it was, it was good to learn more of what makes him like he is. I liked Gino and Leo; they make a great team. And one can't say enough about the Monkeewrench team. This is a splendid novel. I recommend it to anyone who likes police procedurals or thrillers. Another winner, PJ!
I want to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great book for me to read, enjoy and review.
Ice cold heart is the 10th book in the Monkeewrench series, this could easily be read as a stand-alone as it’s such a good story, but reading the previous books will give you a background to the main characters which heightens your enjoyment as you can see how their lives have progressed.
This time the monkeewrench team are looking into a bit coin fraud and this starts interlinking with The Minneapolis police detectives Leo and Gino case, they have a murder on their hands, a kidnapping and links to a war criminal from the Balkans responsible for hundreds of deaths during the Balkan wars.
There is the usual great banter between Leo and Gino, plus into the mix is a Minneapolis winter the description of which will leave you shivering.
Grace and Leo now have a daughter who has enriched not just their lives but the whole of the team.
A great thriller with a satisfying ending, a few red herrings so sharp intake of breath from me when the killer was revealed. Role on the next book.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
WOW! Another great thriller from P.J. Tracy. I was getting burnt out on thrillers always trying to do one more twist and here is a straight up psychotic killer that the Minneapolis Police Department and Monkeewrench must solve.
BRILLIANT! LOVED IT! It took my mind away and I just followed the clues.
Its so hard to review a book, especially a thriller, when you want to write what happened, what surprised you, etc.
Needless to say, thriller fans will NOT be disappointed with this book.
I could NOT put it down!
Wow what a fantastic new adventure in the Monkeewrench series, I loved it! It had me hooked right from page one and didn’t let me go until the end, and what an ending! The story was full of drama, it was thrilling and dark with pure evil. Can Monkeewrench help the cops find the bad guys? You will have to read it to find out, you won’t be disappointed! I’m giving this book 5 stars, it was excellent and deserves it.
I have read the Monkeewrench books since the beginning. If you are concerned about the change to a single author of the books, do not be, in my view the writing is improved in the flow of the story. The evolution of the relationship between Leo and Grace has been entertaining and interesting. In this book that continues, but the addition of new involvements for others in the Monkeewrench crew along with all their adjustments to the new life Leo and Grace have produced adds depth that enhances the experience.
As usual the plot is diabolical and keeps you on the edge of your seat with the pace. A great installment in a very good series.
Taunt, frightening, intelligent yet disarming in its characters ' relationships. Yes! Monkeywrench is back with all their idiosyncrasies and team power. Baby and a beautiful unlikely romance is all part of this read in one sitting book
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review
It’s a cold winter in Minneapolis and there hasn’t been a murder in months. But that come to a end when detectives Leo Maggozzi and Gino Rolesth are called to a gruesome murder scene of a beautiful young women.. A terrifying quest unfolds but with the help of the Monkeewrentch computer Genius team they Solve the mystery after many twists and turns. Another thrilling mystery in this Monkeewrench series.
ARC received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
I've been a big fan of this series ever since I first read the first book about 15 (!) years ago so I was excited when I heard we were getting a new instalment this year.
Overall I enjoyed most of it from Gino's moaning about the weather to getting some exposition to the mysterious Roadrunner. As always though I am left wanting more page-time with the Monkeewrench crew and would sacrifice some of the police procedural and POV of other characters for more time with them.
Really enjoyable novel. Love the Monkeewrench series, and look forward to reading more soon! Highly recommend to others.
The Monkeewrench books are so much fun. I always recommend to our patrons looking for intelligent, witty, stay up all night thrillers. For maximum enjoyment start at the beginning of the series, but newcomers can start here if they aren't overly concerned for character backstory.
