Boss Up! is a Great book, with lots of step-by-step directions about starting and improving a home-based business.
Perfect book for a busy working mom, SAHM, or anyone who is an entrepreneur. I felt like she was talking directly to me throughout the book and when I finished I was reinvigorated and ready to crush my business goals. Thank you Lindsay!
I'm both married and a mother and this book is everything! An absolute game-changer for me. Lindsay shares her story, motivates you, gives you permission to chase your dreams, tells you where you went wrong and pushes you to get back up again.
Along the times of Girl, Wash your Face but, better!
Lindsay uses humor to keep you engaged and her no nonsense approach to business is a breath of fresh air.
Read it! You won't be disappointed.
Boss up! Is the perfect book for moms with a business... neither of which I have! That being said, this book was amazing!! It’s hilarious and down-to-earth mannerism will help you take your business (or life, for me) from good to great! Definitely worth the read, entrepreneur/mom or not.
I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book, but all opinions are my own.
As a mom, wife and independent consultant, this book spoke to me on so many levels. It feels as if Lindsey is sitting in your living room chatting over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine while you are reading. This is a great read for anyone starting out in business, looking to make a change or add a side job, or someone who isn't sure what their next step is.
*I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher.
Loved it!! Lindsay has been a godsend as I return to the workplace after staying home with my kids - full of self don’t and trepidation. I have a whole new appreciation for becoming the “boss” i need to be. I am confident and ready to tackle challenges head on!!
I just want to say that this is one of the most practical, straightforward "self-help" type books I have ever read. Not only is Lindsay brutally honest about her own struggles and completely relatable, but she calls you out in ways that make you step out of your comfort zone.
I received this book from Netgalley with the intentions of being motivated to get up and do the things that I'd always said I would. Namely, getting into actually writing my own book. I thought the cover was cute and that I'd read some cute stories about her own struggles and how she managed to "boss up" and stay motivated.
Honestly I didn't even get into it. It felt like a manual for selling MLMs and the overuse of "find your tribe," "mom tribe," "I love Jesus, but I cuss a little-" all things that MLMs use to "connect" with people in order to get them to schlep their products. It even does go into why MLMs are a legitimate job and not at all the new pyramid scheme. It is after all how she built herself up into being a motivational speaker.
My other big problem was the contradictory message about supporting women. It bothered me that she pulled out the "not like other girls" when it suited her. "Not like other girls" is a way to set yourself apart and casually put other women down while humbly bragging on yourself.
But in the next chapter she was talking about how important it is to support other women and not compare yourself to them. Which is it, Lindsay? Am I unique and a rainbow unicorn in a world of sad sack Eeyore's or am I a supporter of all women without judging them? I believe there's an Instagram cliche about how you don't see people's struggles online because they put on a face for the world around them that she forgot to include here.
In short, this book wasn't for me, but it could help other women, especially if they want to get their MLM off the ground.
A fun, enjoyable book. It helped to bring out a new perspective that I can utilize. Happily it was also in good humor.
I went into this book with a positive mindset and the hopes of learning new techniques for my business. Unfortunately this was a book I struggled to read and currently have only made it half way through the book. For me I knew I was going in with the mindset that it would be geared towards moms, but could also be read someone without kids are a male. I felt that the first few chapters were heavily based on motherhood and dealing with the mom drama that happens. Which I support her writing about as that is her life story it just wasn't one I could relate to and didn't grab my attention.
So while Lindsay's book may have not been for me I just know that it is meant for other women out there that can relate to her story.
While this book may not be perfect and there is much information in it that you can find elsewhere, it is presented in a fresh and entertaining fashion. The target audience may be moms who feel they want to do more with their lives or know they need to prepare for the day (it will come) when the kids no longer need 24/7 supervision or leave the home nest. This book also has value to the non-parental humans dreaming of starting a business or working online, including those who can still be considered a younger generation. The examples and references are current and authentic.
Lindsay relates her own experiences and opinions without making this an About Me (or) Do It My Way memoir type instruction manual. She acknowledges that it takes dedication and WORK to achieve your dreams. Standing out from the crowd will never be easy. But it is doable. Mentors, even if you never meet them, are available and invaluable. She gives practical and achievable steps to moving forward and maintaining your motivation. You can feel her energy across the pages.
I still struggle to find my own sweet spot, where my passions and interests and talent intersect, but she gives me hope that if I continue to dig, I will be prepared whenever I discover my niche.
I was happy to request this book via Netgalley to review.
I read a lot of non-fiction books, but they always tend to be more science based or biographies and memoirs. I’ve read a few self-help, but I rarely venture into the business book realm. I got enough of business textbooks in college. That being said, I liked the cover and with a very real and constant desire to begin plans for my own business, I decided to give Boss Up a shot!
Honestly, I’m not sure I was in this book’s target market. Mainly because I’m not a mom, and this was clearly written with mom’s in mind! Seriously, did anybody count how many times the words mom, mother or mama were actually used, because I'd be curious to know that number! I’m sure that it wasn’t intentionally polarizing, but even though the vast majority of her actual business creating points had nothing to do with being a mom, I couldn’t help but feel that I wasn’t supposed to be reading this book. I couldn’t relate to her mom types and descriptions and I couldn’t relate to a lot of her life experiences. Does this make the book bad? Heck, no! It just makes it not for me! I’m not part of her ‘tribe’.
Setting aside how I felt while reading, the actual content was wicked accurate and helpful! I enjoyed how she focused on exercises to help find things that the reader is passionate about, things they are skilled in and how to turn those passions and skills into an idea that will work for you! Finding something you’re passionate about, skilled at and able to make money with is by far the hardest hurdle to overcome when you’re starting a business and it was refreshing to see content and exercises helping with those difficult steps. She obviously knows what works, at least for her, and was able to convey it in a relatable and easy to follow way.
The thing about these types of books is that the author often needs to be, and is, vague. They can’t write to each reader’s particular interests and desires. So it can sometimes feel unfinished. Like the author is giving you tools but not telling you how to use them correctly. There is also the inevitability of learning way more than you ever wanted to about the author. Self-Help books merge how-to writing with personal memoirs and it’s definitely not for everyone, especially people who want more check list, less life story.
Boss Up! receives 3.5 stars from me! It had great tactics and advice that could and would help many new business creators and was a cute read. Not my favorite, but nowhere near my least favorite!
I loved this book! I am not a mom, but I do like the entrepreneurship and how the business works. I felt myself laughing and learning all at the same time. This book has a lot of lessons to be learned in life and how to deal with them in the best way possible. I also love the fact that you get to write notes in this book and go back and remember why you wrote them and the meaning for each. This book had me thinking in so many ways and how I can be a better entrepreneur /person. I enjoyed this book. It was wonderful. Thank you.
Overall, I did like this book. I did feel like she got off-topic which is why I could only give this 4 stars. She definitely has many practical suggestions and multiple forms that could help provide focus and direction for any business. Her stories do add interest to the book for the most part. Thomas Nelson is typically a Christian publisher, but the book is not really filled with biblical principles. But she uses practical positive principles. This is not a book about getting ahead of others. Instead she emphasizes doing your best work for yourself and your customers. Thanks to Thomas Nelson and #netgalley for allowing me to review this book.
I just want to say that I am not a business owner so I'm probably not the exact target audience for this book. I'm also not a mom and that's a lot of what she talks about in this book. Lindsay does have an easy, conversational style. I am enjoying her stories and her realness. As of yet, I haven't really found any solid takeaways that I can use in my current field. I can definitely see how this information could be useful to many small business owners. There are actionable steps and exercises to help target exactly where to go and how to get there as a business owner. *I received an ARC from the publisher but my opinions are in no way influenced by this.*
If you’re an entrepreneur or any person working :) this is a must read for that push of motivation!! Lindsay is the person you follow if you need some extra... yet real motivation!!
Straightforward, pragmatic advice for the female executive. Loved it! HIghly recommend.
Many thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I love this book! Lindsay is so good at just telling it like it is, weeding out the excuses and teaching you how to build a business. One of my goals is to attend an event where she is speaking. Thank you to the publisher, Thomas Nelson and netgalley for and advanced copy of the book in exchange for my review.
If you are looking for a motivational book on getting started this one is good for that. The author shares her journey and is straight forward about getting your stuff together and start!!
I received an advanced copy and this is my honest opinion.
If you want to start a business, this is the book for you! Lindsay takes your hand and walks you through each step of getting your business started, from building the basic foundation to how to decide what companies to partner with.
The best part for me were the step-by-step exercises she has you complete to really make sure the lessons sink in and are relevant to you and your unique ideas. Absolutely brilliant.
I've read a few "start your own business" books, and this one is the most-helpful from a practical standpoint. I'll definitely refer back to it when I begin my own venture later this year!
