A great early chapter book for kids. A great message about working animals and also the ASPCA.
This illustrated chapter book is the second that I have read in the ASPCA kids series. The main characters were in the last book as well and include Chance, a therapy dog, who helps Meg who has epilepsy.
In this story, the friends are looking for a pet to be a reading buddy at the library. They have done their research and understand how an animal friend might help reluctant readers. Meg, Amanda, Blanca and Drew have hopes of Arnie, a shelter dog but instead, by the end of the book, have found a macaw who enjoys being read to and commenting on what is heard.
Children who have read the earlier stories will enjoy spending time at the shelter, school and library where the protagonists spend time. They will find enough plot to keep them turning the pages.
The illustrations complement the story well. They are bright and appealing.
At the end of the story there are some special sections. One has photos and the story of the therapy bird that was the basis for the book. There is also information about birds as pets and a section that tells about each of the main characters.
If you know a child who likes clubs, animals and stories about friendship and who is starting to read slightly longer chapter books, get them this book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this e galley in return for an honest review.
I like the idea of this story, and I like that there were multiple happy endings for the shelter animals. There were some times where the story was a little challenging to follow, however, I enjoyed the story overall.
I also liked the connection short text to the real macaw. What a treat!
Such a cute book, and a great way to bring awareness to working animals! My niece is obsessed with dogs and we've tried many times to explain that not all of the ones she sees in public are allowed to be petted, especially if they're a service animal. I read this book to her and it hit so close to home for us, as her Mom has epilepsy as well. I'm definitely adding this one to the childrens shelf in my library!
Another wonderful book about Paw Pals. Showcases therapy animals in their many different functions, which this one focuses on reading pet. Yet this story is so much more as it also sets good examples of volunteering, friendship, sharing, respect, and family. This book deserves to be on the shelf of every library. Very well written with sophisticated language.

Fantastic read for children. This book was loved by my 2 children when I read it to them. So much so they want me to buy it so definitely a huge hit
This is another great book in PAW Pals series. This story is about building confidence with the help of animals. Thank you to the ASPCA for this wonderful series to help bring attention to shelter animals. Thank you Printers Row Publishing Group via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.
This was such a sweet way to build-up young readers confidence. My daughter is right on the cusp of reading chapter books and this was a great introduction. In addition to fun characters and a simple to follow plot, it inspired her to check the local libraries for read-to-dogs programs, and found one! The message is effective and the ASPCA is admirable, a great combination!
