Can I just say, this book was not at all what I was expecting from the blurb, and it was all the better for it. A truly original premise, it tells the story of Abbie Cullen, wife to tech entrepreneur Tim, who wakes up after an accident to discover she’s an artificial intelligence, constructed from the memories of the ‘real’ Abbie years after her actual death. So far, so clever, but this is much more than a smart idea. Abbie feels real to the reader, right from the opening sentence – “You’re having that dream again,” and you are immediately plunged into her reality.
At first, you believe the story’s about a man, desperate with grief, who creates an AI replacement for the wife he couldn’t bear to lose, with all the societal challenges this brings, but pretty quickly things take a darker turn. This really was the definition of a page turner for me, the pace and pressure ratcheting up the further into the book you get. This could so easily have become gimmicky and too much about the technology, but it’s the emotional connections and experiences which really drive the plot.
Make sure you put a good layer of suncream on before you open this book, because if you’re not careful you’ll get sunburned lying on your lounger, so distracted by what you’re reading that you forget to turn over.
Fantastic story line, very well written with an unexpected twist. Loved this and look forward to more from this author.
Oh wow! This is a must read book. I could so easily spoil it for others by giving too much away here and every reader deserves to experience it the way I just have. I was gripped from the start and was reaching for it at any spare moment. I’m surprised but not ashamed that I was moved to tears quite near the end. Oh, do you know what, just go read the book. Most highly recommended.
Gripping tale with twists and turn. Like every other book of this author I felt so engrossed, unable to put it down. The short chapters make this feel even more intense. I can't wait to get the book when its released to add to my collection.
Tim Scott and Abbie Cullen seemed to have the perfect marriage. So, when tech genius Tim loses his wife in a tragic accident, it’s no surprise that he is soon able to recreate a digital robotic version of the woman he loved.
The new Abbie thinks and feels like Abbie, has her memories and her looks, but she knows she is just a machine. And as she starts unravelling the truth about her human counterpart and her marriage to Tim, things become very dark very fast.
Read from a third person’s perspective, seemingly someone close to Tim who works at his company, we are introduced to the beginning of their relationship, as well as seeing what Abbie learns in her quest to find out what really happened.
Tim Scott: the perfect husband? A technology visionary? A possessive tyrant with a Madonna-Whore complex?
I got lost in my need to understand what happened, and truth be told, the ending left me disheartened. The Perfect Wife holds a mirror up to the tech industry, highlights the misogyny involved and how men in power can abuse what they have. Is technological advance always such a good thing? You might feel differently after reading this book. An intensely thought provoking read.
I read this book in a day, and I loved absolutely every minute of it. I could not put this down.
I was interested, fascinated and intrigued right from the start, and this book was brilliant right the way through. I had only read one JP Delaney book before this, and I am now a firm fan.
Thank you to netgalley and Quercas books and JP Delaney for this advanced reading copy, in exchange for honest feedback and review.
I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
What an intriguing interesting read! I went into this one completely blind and I found it rather refreshing to read. I was kept constantly guessing and I was instantly captivated by its gripping, intense plotline. I just love this authors books, can't wait for the next.
Really enjoyed this book. This author just hits it out the park every single time!
A bit sci fi but more Thriller, follow the story of Tim and his AI wife Abbie who is discovering more about the real Abbie and her mysterious disappearance.
I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. The premise was so thought-provoking and I thought it was very cleverly done with the perspectives - using second person could have been confusing but it wasn't and really added to the drama. The suspense was really well paced and I was up well into the night reading it because I was desperate to know what happened next. A five-star read.
Imagine that you are slowly waking up, your body hurts, you hear machines beeping around... Then you see your husband and when he sees your open eyes, relief floods his face. Were you in an accident? What happened? Your husband looks older than you remember and when you look around you realise you are not in a hospital. What is going on?? Your husband looks at you with tears in his eyes and says there's something he has to tell you. He gently takes your hand and then says these words "You are not human... you are artificial."
Insane? Well, that's pretty much what happened to Abbie who was 'revived' by her husband after her tragic death. I found the idea of developing such a highly intelligent and human resembling robot fascinating and thought provoking. Is it morally correct to create a robot with memories, characteristics and physical features based on someone we knew? Whatever your answer is, I bet you get sucked into this story. The narration is cleverly done and the story pieced together nicely. I didn't care much for JP Delaney's The Girl Before so I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed The Perfect Wife. Even though I was left with some unanswered questions, I'm happy to let go given my overall enjoyment of the book.
Many thanks to Quercus for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
I've had JP Delaney on my "to read" list for a while so jumped at the chance to read this book.
Whilst the book had an element of sci-fi (a genre I would usually stay away from) it did not hinder my enjoyment of this book and it provoked some interesting questions about AI and ethics which really make you think.
Abbie and Tim are both interesting and complex characters - both are well written.
The book lost me a little towards the end and I would have preferred a different outcome.
3 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley, JP Delaney and Quercus Books for my free copy in exchange for a review.
I wasn't sure if this was a book for me but WOW what a read. A psychological thriller with a touch of sci fi but SO much more. I could not put this book down. It is also a thought provoking read dealing with AI, Autism, love, greed and control. This author has the knack of drawing the reader in and then you are hooked. You can't put this book down. It was a little disjointed in places and the ending was rushed and rather abrupt. This is just my own personal opinion and in no way did it detract from my reading pleasure. Almost five stars and highly recommended.
I would like to thank the author, Quercus Books and Netgalley for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
All this book seems to be about is robots and autism. As someone who has always enjoyed previous books by this author, it pains me to say that this one was awful. It was confusing to say the least with one “character” saying “you”, meaning “I”. Why not just use a different font? It really was over long for what actually happened and I skipped page after page and didn’t seem to have missed much! Was it meant to be sci-fi, thriller or what - I couldn’t tell you. Sorry but this was a book I was relieved to finally get to the end of - just not for me this time.

Abbie wakes up and has no recollection of where she is and what happened to her. The man taking her home is her successful techie husband Tim. He informs there’s been an accident but he’s unwilling to provide her more information.
Abbie soon learns things are definitely not what they appear. She is not the woman everyone knew Abbie to be. She really doesn’t quite know herself.
Fragments keep coming back to her and she attempts to piece them together - things about Tim; things about their marriage and relationship; as well as things about their child Danny and his diagnosis and treatment/s for autism. She does so not know who she can trust and what was, and is, real in her life.
Like The Girl Before, my head was spinning with each plot twist. I COULD NOT LOOK AWAY. Most of the time I kept thinking ‘Oh no he didn’t ...’
As far as thrillers and mysteries this is a winner for me. It’s intense! At its roots is a family drama with a wider reach. It is sci-fi without it being confusing and outside of the realm of belief. To go too much more into the plot gives too much away but I know more about cobots and AI than I did previously, and I don’t feel like my brain hurts in the slightest.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ all round. I knew it because I’ll definitely read it again. It’s also taken me a day to pick another book - a good measure for me of having enjoyed it so much.
Hail JPDelaney. You have done it again!

Absolutely intriguing novel. Original and informative with regard to autism.
The author kept my interest throughout. Highly recommended especially for fans of Westworld.
WOW! Not what I was expecting after reading the Girl Before but sometimes that's a good thing.
Recommended.
I loved this book. Having read the other offerings from this author I was not expecting the sci fi twist to it. An original read, would continue reading books by the author.
A clever and thought provoking novel which seamlessly combines a page turning psychological thriller with discussions on the treatment of people with autism and deep questions on the meaning of self and human and artificial intelligence.
I think for me one of the most troubling parts was the very end when I looked up the quoted patent and discovered Google really has patented a " system for
robot personality development"
Bravo Mr Delaney - I'm looking forward to your next chosen topic
Thank you to netgalley and Quercus books for an advance copy of this book.
I loved JP Delaney's previous two books and I was really looking forward to reading The Perfect Wife. The story combines AI with coercive control within a relationship. It started off strong with Abbie 'waking up' and the knowledge that there was a mystery at the heart of her disappearance. However, I felt I should have been sympathetic towards the cobot, but the knowledge that she was an AI version of Abbie early on meant that I didn't care about her. I didn't have anyone I was rooting for within the story. The ending was a bit hurried and I was disappointed with the twist. Overall, if you like sci-fi mixed within the setting of a thriller you would enjoy The Perfect Wife, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
I previously read and very much enjoyed The Girl Before, and was excited by the opportunity to read this new novel by JP Delaney. I was not expecting quite such a story which is nothing short of sci-fi, a genre I have never had a lot of interest in - buy wow! This book is so unusual and original, a thriller but with a serious sub-text. It raises some very interesting issues about robotics and AI and how far humans have the right to go. I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it.
