From the best selling author of NOW YOU SEE HER.
A island community is in shock after the discovery of a decomposed body.
The body was discovered in the garden of former family home of Stella Harvey, the home the Stella's family fled from twenty five years ago.
This novel has secrets, intrigue and mystery all round into one.
In this book the reader is thrown into the mystery right from the start and the pace is kept up throughout the book. The characters are believable and well-written. My only gripe was that the continuous switching from past to present which was a trifle off-putting but the storyline is a really good one and builds up into a very exciting climax. I would certainly recommend this book to mystery lovers.
I really didn't know what to make of this book, I liked it at the start and thought it sounded interesting, but I soon got fed up of the constant going back to the past and then back to the present time chapters. This technique can work well, but the past chapters lost my interest quite early on and I just wanted to get on with the present story.I did guess some of it but was still surprised by other things and that was good, I really am undecided about how many stars to give this.I guess if you are more patient than me you may enjoy reading the chapters set in the past more than I did, and I think the fairest I can be is to give the book 4 stars. Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for an ARC.
This book started off so well - great setting, engaging narrative, intrigue and family secrets. Sadly a rushed and somewhat disappointing climax and ending spoiled the overall read for me. Not up to the authors usual 5☆ standard I'm afraid.
Stella Harvey lives an idyllic existence on a small island until her family have to mysteriously leave suddenly during a storm. Years later a body is discovered at the edge of her old garden bit who is it and how did they die?
What follows is a clever thriller but the ending left me a little hollow not sure why.
A good read nevertheless and I will look forward to reading more from the author
This was an entertaining read. I found the plot interesting and the characters had good substance to them. I had guessed the ending before the end but if I'm honest it wasnt much before the end. I would read other titles by this author and would reccomend this book for others to read.
An amazing, engaging story about family secrets and a tight knit community. A good couple of plot twists and a lovely setting. Recommended for psychological thriller fans x
I liked this book but it did get slightly confusing!
A thriller regarding a rushed exit from a sparsely populated island. Characters weren't particularly likeable and didn't get much time to get to know them but over all, a good read!
This is a well written story about an adult counsellor, Stella, who has past demons involving her family and their time on a remote island called Evergreen. The family have long since moved away and Stella has worked hard to hide her memories, then, a body is discovered.
The positives are: I enjoyed the alternate past vs present chapters and the slow unveiling of each family member, all who have an element of suspicion surrounding them. It’s a slow build with an ending that ties up all loose ends.
The negatives: it’s very slow and quite formulaic in it’s process. Also, despite the ending tying everything up, it’s a tad far fetched.
All in all, it’s an enjoyable, fairly easy read. 3*
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to preview this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is only the 2nd book I’ve read by this author bit will certainly be reading more. While the first hand was good I found the second half so fast paced I found myself having to go back a page everynoqa d then to remind me who was who, and what they had or hadn’t done. All in all, a very good story
Such an accomplished read. I wasn’t sure where it was going to take me, but it kept me gripped all the way to the end. The plot twists and turns. Some colourful and intriguing characters with a very atmospheric locational setting. Another gem from Heidi Perks!
It was okay but a little disappointing, I didn't gel with the charters and I found the storyline uninspiring. Sorry I liked her previous book much more.
When Stella Harvey hears the news that a body has been found in the garden of her childhood home - the home her family fled without explanation twenty-five years ago, she feels the need to return to the tiny island off Poole to find out more.
This turn of events leads her to question her past and becomes desperate to unearth the truth, She discovers that the people she left behind aren't as friendly as she remembers and that they will go to any length to protect their secrets.
It's a fast paced story flicking between the present day and the build up in the past to the Harvey family suddenly leaving the small island all those years ago. It's mostly seen from the point of view of Stella in the present and Marie, her mother, in the past.
I received this book from netgalley in return for a honest review.
An enjoyable read that manages to weave two timeframes into the story with ease. A good ending too, not one I expected.
What a great twisty thriller, which will keep you hooked until the very end.
Stella grew up on a small island called Evergreen. She absolutely loved her childhood but then at the age of eleven her parents moved her and her siblings away from the island and they never went back. Twenty five years later a body is discovered on the island, next to Stella’s old family home. She can’t resist returning to the island, something is pulling her back but not everyone is pleased to see her.
There are plenty of secrets being kept within the island community, but will Stella discover them before it’s to late ? Does she really want to unearth the secrets that have been kept for so long ?
This is a great psychological thriller and I loved the concept of the small island community and sticking together until things start to unravel. This really is a book you need to add to your reading list !!
Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
I was hooked by this book, from the sudden departure of the family from the island in a raging storm through all the twists and turns of the story. The end is not predictable. Loved it, a great read.
From the outset you are caught up in the strange and rapid departure of Stella and her family from the island, made very real by the fact that Stella, the main voice of the story, has no idea why they are doing the midnight flit.
The book moves between the present and the early 1990's when Stella was a child living on Evergreen island. The island characters are well portrayed in their isolation, unwilling to accept incomers without due suspicion and examination and really not fond of the tourists, highlighted by the B&B not wanting guests!
As the story unfolds an explanation for the rapid departure becomes apparent, although this is still not the whole story.
The author teases out the details of the island life, the departure, the aftermath and the motives bit by bit as Stella herself uncovers them, frustrated by the death of her mother and her fathers descent into dementia preventing her from getting immediate answers, keeping you reading late into the night!
A family leave their island home on very stormy night. Why leave in such conditions, in such a hurry? An event causes the youngest sibling to return to the island 25 years later. Deep family and community secrets are steadily unraveled.
An atmospheric page turning mystery. I found Stella, the main character to be well drawn and sympathetic, her elder sister Bonnie deeply unsympathetic.
Another gripping read from Heidi Perks - I wanted to read it in one go, and was most put out when I was interrupted .
As usual with my reviews, I will not reiterate any of the plot line (plenty of that type of review around if that's what you're looking for!) but will just record my own opinions and feelings.
This is essentially something of a time-shift novel, switching between the island childhood and mainland present day lives of three siblings and their family, and exploring the backstory behind the gruesome discovery of a body near their former home.
There are some likeable characters, some less so - but all are well-drawn. Nothing is quite as it seems at first, and we eventually uncover the truth. I have to admit that I guessed the twist, but that's probably because I've read so many books in this genre.
Looking forward to the next novel from Heidi Perks.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for my honest review.
The book begins on a stormy night when Stella the child tells us about leaving the island; the rush, the secrecy, the feeling of dread, of uncertainty. And from then on flips between Stella’s childhood and now. It’s a little bit of a mystery a little bit crime and a little bit family saga. The family dynamic unfolds throughout the book as Stella searches for the truth after a body was found on the island they left 25 years ago
An enjoyable read
