I loved the first book in the series and fell in love with these characters all over again! After the ending of the first book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the second one! This book delivered on all of my expectations and so much more. It was fast-paced, intriguing, and a book that I want to reread over and over again!
This was a wonderful book. Mary never seems to disappoint when it comes to her readers . If you haven’t read her you are missing out!
This book was a great follow up to Dance of Thieves! It covered so much, the story itself was interesting, the characters intriguing, and the world interesting (I wish I knew more about how the world got that way in the first place!!). I enjoyed the story from start to finish. Definite add to my library!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group and Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) for the Advance Reader Copy Vow of Thieves (Dance of Thieves #2) by Mary E. Pearson (writer extraordinaire!!!) in exchange for an honest review. I am so thankful to have received the first book in this duology, Dance of Thieves and NOW I am honored to have read this second awesome romance/fantasy! Teens will LOVE this series (I also recommend they read The Remnant Chronicles series too) there is so much moving this story forward, Jase and Kazi are strong protagonists; they complement each other, love each other deeply, and are their best selves when they are together. From page one the plot moves quickly; excitement thrilled this reader as I rooted for Kazi to outwit the overwhelming evil forces that have imprisoned her. She must constantly call up her “thief” mentality to battle King Montegue and his henchmen to valiantly to save Jase’s family. The settings were stark and also beautiful with Jase and Kazi’s journey to Tor’s Watch holding so much hope (for Jase) and fear (for Kazi). All of the characters (both good and evil) are strong under Pearson’s talented hands; we can hate them one minute but they also redeem themselves too. There was so much political backstabbing and family drama but there was always loyalty and history propelling the Ballenger family to never give up hope. I loved this book; did not want it to end; but oh what an ending! Highly recommended!
Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for this early copy! I was lucky enough to win this egalley. I went into this uncertain because I struggled with book one but I found myself completely engrossed in this world and with these great characters! It is a full 5 star read for me.
What I Liked:
Romance. I felt like Pearson managed to capture my romantically resistance heart this time around. I found myself almost in tears a few times because of what was happening with Kazi and Jase.
Characters. Kazi was amazing in this second book. I loved her in the first book as well but she shined in this one! I found myself emotionally invested in the novel because of how much I started to care for Kazi and Jase.
Action/Intensity/Plot. I flew through the novel because the pacing was well-done. It did not feel like any part of it dragged for me. I kept turning page after page because I needed to know what was going to happen to these characters.
Writing Style. This is the second series from Pearson that I've read and one of my favorite books by her. I'm becoming more and more a fan of her writing style with each new novel she writes. I found her prose beautiful and her characters well-written.
I recommend checking out this well-written and hard to put down duology!
Rating:
5 Stars Out of 5 Stars
After reading and devouring Dance of Thieves, I started Vow as soon as I got it in my greedy hands.
I love love love Kazi and Jase. I love how they’re strong on their own, but even better and stronger together. I love their banter and sweet swoons and basically everything between them.
Plot wise, man...I wasn’t ready at all. This is a roller coaster of kissing and fighting and stabbing and explosions and treachery. Throw in a couple of surprising reveals and character appearances and I didn’t know what to do with myself.
Overall, it was a phenomenal story that was equal parts maddening and satisfying. Huge thanks to Mary for these amazing books.
**Huge thanks to Henry Holt for providing the arc free of charge**
This continued story of Kari really got to me, She goes through so much and all while trying to not disappoint her family. This book was so well written but a bit confusing due to not remembering all that happened in the first book. So I’m currently rereading Dance of Thieves so I can go back over Vow of Thieves to get a better understanding. After that I can better update my review.
This is the continuing story of Kazi and Jase (the follow up to Dance of Thieves)
Mary E. Pearson is a fabulous story teller and I get so absorbed in reading her books. She is so descriptive, you feel as if you are actually there.
In the absence of Jase, a new ruler has taken over and he is not who anyone expected. Jase and Kazi are each wounded and separated and spend most of the book thinking the other is dead, but hoping they are still alive.
Kazi tries to prove her loyalty to the Ballenger's but at a high cost.
Just go and read the books!
So exciting to immerse myself again in the Remnant World! Ever since The Kiss of Deception, I’ve felt that Pearson works the dual POV like no one can. She’s so effective at using it to throw out little twists at each transition, propelling the story forward and making the read such an adventure. Kazi and Jase are finally together, eager to return to Tor’s Watch, although a bit unsure of what kind of reception they will receive. Nothing, however, prepares them for what they walk into. Kazi once again relies on her years as a street thief and her love for Jase to get her through. Jase sidelined by grievous injuries manages to get it together in time to do his part. Justice is nicely served, allowing them to recover all that has been lost. It’s not so much about the plot as the deliciousness of it all. Is anything else going to happen in the Remnant World? I want to know!
Kazi and Jase's second book begins right where the first book ends. They take you on another fabulous journey filled with twists and turns. Kazi and Jase are such great characters and it is so much fun to go on the journey with them.
The characters in the world of the Remnants are unforgettable! The writing and story lines pull you in and don't let go until the last page. This would be a great series to read this summer!
When Jase and Kazi return to Tor's Watch bearing good news from the queen, they are dismayed to find things are not quite how they left them. They are soon separated by a sneak attack, the kingdom is reduced to rubble, the Ballengers are in hiding, old allies are now enemies, and a fool is behind it all. Once again Ms. Pearson spins a web of intrigue, suspense, and betrayal that will once again have readers guessing who is really playing who.
I enjoyed watching Jase and Kazi's story unravel in "Dance of Thieves" and this sequel does not disappoint. It's the perfect blend of action, romance, intrigue, and wit!
I liked the intrigue and characters from the first book more so than the direction taken in this installment. It was hard to keep track of time and either these characters heal really quickly or this story took place over the course of a year. I'm not a fan of stories being tied up in a neat little bow at the end where everyone gets what they want and they all live happily ever after.
I fell in love with Kazi and Jase in Dance of Thieves, but this book earned them a permanent place in my heart. I think Kazi is an incredible protagonist and identification figure—her journey, and the way her personality has formed because of it, make her a layered, multidimensional, very relatable character. She doesn’t always make the “right” decisions, but she does the best she can. She has found and built her own family after losing her mom as a child. She still carries her grief, her fear of being trapped, and her thirst for answers and vengeance. The choices she makes are an amazing point of conversation, as are Jase’s— he has the added responsibility of leading and trying to ensure the survival of his people, not to mention his family. Their romance is a huge highlight, and this book delivers in intrigue, action, and of course kissing scenes. I loved it and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well told romantic adventure, Let this book transport you.
I stumbled upon Dance of Thieves, and it was the most pleasant surprise of a fantasy story. I read it in a night, and immediately requested the Remnant Chronicles and read those back to back. I was so, so happy when I was approved for an arc of Vow of Thieves. I read it in a single sitting and loved every second of it. Kazi and Jase are my absolute favs, and I loved the introduction of the new villain and all of the twists and turns the story takes. The ending was really satisfying, especially if you've read the Remnant Chronicles. Highly recommend and hope everyone loves this story as much as I did!
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Wow. Just wow. Mary Pearson has just become one of my favorite authors after reading this book. It really puts the perfect punctuation on the end of a thrilling universe.
Person truly has a gift for story-telling. She kept me guessing at every turn, and is especially masterful at withholding bits of important information until the right moment. Her writing style makes you continue to yearn for more. I simply couldn't put it down!
As far as characters go, Kazi is a beautifully developed character. The reader feels fully immersed in her thoughts, feelings, and actions by the end of the book. Jase is an extremely lovable character as well. On the flip side, Montegue is truly someone to hate, and Pearson expertly cultivates a sense of loathing within the reader to make the reader feel as if they are part of the story. I was easily able to picture everything that was happening as if it was happening right in front of me. I appreciate that everything is not sunshine and rainbows with Pearson. She always manages to weave in some heartbreak to her stories.
All in all, I applaud Pearson on another successful and captivating read. I would recommend this to any and all avid readers.
Ugh this was so great I was disappointed when it ended! Easily one of my favorite reads of the year so far. I really love it when I get so into a book my heart is actually racing with anxiety over what's going to happen, and I can feel myself getting super emotional at certain points. I inhaled this book over the course of two days, and probably would have finished it in one if I hadn't had to work. The first book was fantastic on its own, but this one really blew it out of the water. I am definitely going to be checking out more of Mary Pearson's books in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you net galley for the advance reader copy of this novel. I loved this author and was thrilled to get this book as a galley copy. It did not disappoint! Great dual point of view and the world building and characters remain favorites! I sure hope that there are other books by this author to come!!!!
My Review: This dual POV was amazing. I loved book one and this one was out of this world. I so can't wait to get my hands on a finished copy and I know you will all feel the same. I love this world that Pearson has created and the characters that she has brought to life. The story was so full of twists and turns that I couldn't put it down and there is so much that would spoil it. OMG I have no idea what to say about this title. This book covers everything from family, love, friendships, and more. I so can't wait for another title set in this world.
As a HUGE fan of Mary Pearson's writing style - this book should not have surprised me the way it did. How does she do it? This was FANTASTIC with such beautiful writing that I can't wait to pass it along to my patrons. She pieces the puzzle together beautifully all while making you fall in love with each character even more than you were before.
Bravo!
Initially, this follow up to Dance of Thieves was a little hard to catch up on as it had been awhile since I finished the first in this series. I would have liked a little reminder of the mission Kazi was on for Queen Lia to help set the scene, but the book jumps right into the return trip.
I had to do a little backtracking here to remember (it was a couple of hundred books ago). Kazi and Jase have good news to share when they return to Tor's Watch. The Ballengers will no longer be considered outlaws and Tor's Watch will now be a kingdom.
But...as they approach, a vicious attack separates them, and Kazi believes Jase to be dead. The new villain is introduced, one that no one would have suspected. The surviving Ballengers are in hiding, two young Ballengers are hostages, there are missing papers that are the object of both sides, a surprising ally...and plenty of suspense and action. I sped through this one quickly.
I've enjoyed everything I've read by Mary E. Pearson, and I am a little disappointed that this series is only two books. I wonder where Pearson will go next--but I hope for more books in this same world that began with The Remnant Chronicles.
