I absolutely the world building in this book. This was a fabulous follow-up and I need more Jase and Kazi in my life!
This has been one of my most anticipated reads of 2019, and I assure you it did not disappoint. Once again, Mary E. Pearson effortlessly draws us in with her beautiful story-telling, making this next installment in realm of the Remnant Chronicles feel like coming home. I was completely swept away by Dance of Thieves, and just when I thought it couldn’t get better, Vow of Thieves sets me right within the first few pages. Whether you started this adventure with or after The Remnant Chronicles, this duology will astound you, as I find myself on the verge of a massive book hangover after finishing this book in nearly one sitting. Readers and fans are in for a treat and one of the most satisfying endings they may ever encounter.
I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
I was happy to return to Mary E. Pearson’s Remnant Chronicles world with Vow of Thieves. I was most excited to see how Kazi and Jase’s story would end and whoa. I could not have imagined a better story than what was written! It was truly remarkable and spellbinding. I can only hope that Mary will write another story in this realm for I truly never want to leave it!
Kazi and Jase are making progress in getting Tor’s Watch to be recognized as a kingdom, negotiations are going well with our favorite queen. In the meantime, Kazi and Jase are returning home to his kingdom, but instead of a happy reunion with his family, they are met with attackers. Something terrible has happened to Jase’s home and invaders have taken over. We’re met with a battle to end all battles, Jase is shot multiple times with arrows and Kazi is fighting to help him but is soon overtaken by the enemy.
It’s not long before Kazi is told that Jase is dead, she sees the proof with her own eyes, yet refuses to believe it. King Montegue seems to have made himself at home in Jase’s kingdom. I struggled with trying to remember how things are geographically laid out, who rules which territory/kingdom/country. I couldn’t understand why it was somehow legally okay that Montegue just took Jase’s kingdom as his own, but that’s beside the point.
Kazi, ever watchful and waiting, knows how to play this game. Let the enemy think you’re on his side before turning the tables against him. She stays his “guest” in the castle mostly to watch out for Jase’s younger siblings who the king seems to be using as his personal shield in case there were any enemies amongst the crows. The Ballengers have gone into hiding when the takeover started happening, hence the reason behind their absence. But she will not let Jase’s kingdom remain in enemy hands for long.
This book was truly exciting and breathtaking! I don’t think my heart started beating normally again until about ¾ into the book because omg!! Kazi and Jase were separated pretty much at the beginning of the novel and we’re left wondering of Jase’s fate for a good time. I mean, in a sense, you know what it will be, at least in the beginning. But man…Kazi is totally badass! Oh my god, I love this girl! She would so have to be on my team for any sort of heist because she has got serious skills! She’s got a strong sense of honor too and her loyalty knows no bounds. This girl has got game!
While there were a few faces I couldn’t quite remember in this one, I was happy to see plenty of familiar ones! The characters in this series were all amazing! They all have their own personality and no two are alike, from Kazi’s best friends, down to every sibling Jase has. The villains were villainous and you just wanted to see them burn alive! Lol. I get very passionate about characters when they are written so well! I was also elated to see some of our favorite characters from The Remnant Chronicles make an appearance as well! I was in tears at this reunion of sorts and seeing them all in their happy ending roles! Eep!!
I still see plenty of possibilities with this series! I feel like if Mary wanted to, she could easily pick up another character and spin us a new story or two or three! This world is vast and amazing, whether the characters be new ones or ones that were overlooked beforehand, I would easily pick up another book set in this world! Mary is an incredible storyteller and if you haven’t picked up one of her books yet, I would highly recommend doing so! As a side note, you can pick up this duology without having read the previous trilogy, while they are in the same world, the first set of characters only play minor roles in this duology so you wouldn’t be missing key details. But I would highly recommend reading that one anyway because it was freaking amazing too!
Vow of Thieves was a page-turning book that I never wanted to end, but like all good novels, end it must. This was a story filled with action, adventure, romance, a cast of characters you will love and hate with a burning passion. It’s a story you can easily wile away the hours with and leave reality behind. This is not a story to be overlooked or missed!

"Who will write our story, Jase? We will Kazi. You and I will write our own story..."
I am in love with Pearson's characters, in every way, in every book... The story of Kazi and Jase picks up on the road and I just want to keep reading. Pearson expertly uses figurative language and imagery to help the reader continue on the journey with Jase and Kazi every step of the way. The story of our main characters keeps us entranced and engaged the entire story and we love the even more.
"But then I heard a scream. A loud, glorious scream that bounced off the stony canyon. It was the sound of thwarter dreams. The sound of fury and betrayal". The villains. YAY oh YAY - surprises and changes at every twist and turn and while you may think you know how things are going, there are twists and turns and while you may predict someone is switching sides, the manner in which they do it will always surprise you.
As the story progresses we dive into family dynamics, forgiveness, growth, love and kingdoms. The last chapter is a beautiful wrap up of the entire Pearson saga and while I am so devastated this storyline is over, I am so amazed at how well it wrapped up that I am satisfied. As a teacher it is also such an amazing opportunity to find such a great series that is able to be used in the classroom and able to excite young adults into reading this wonderful series!! I cannot wait to hear what is next for Pearson, Her writing is dynamic and the world needs more!!
Thank you to Macmillan Publishers for the free ARC, this made my world!!
I absolutely loved the Kiss of Deception novels and the first book in this duology spinoff was great too! So my question was, how would this second book end? And applause, applause! Because it was very well done!
Reading the dual POVs from Jase and Kazi were both awesome! I loved and cared for them rather equally, which is usually a hard concept for me! I generally prefer one character over the other!
In this story, intense stuff goes down and it had my pulse racing! Without giving too much away, there was some fabulous twists and the writing was incredibly lush! This world is one I adore to get lost in and one I won't soon forget!
I absolutely loved this series! I read Dance of thieves and loved it. I was hooked and so sad i had to wait for the second one. Reading Vow of Thieves was everything I hoped for! It was full of twist and turns and i was excited all along the way. I can not wait to recommend this book to my library patrons!
I loved this book! The last book in the Remnant Chronicles was a bit disappointing for me (I felt like throwing Pauline and Kaden together wasn't realistic/built up enough) and I was worried this book would fall into that same category. I loved how she separated the two main characters and gave us hints of what happened between Kazi and Jase on their journey back, but we did not actually find out they were married until much later. The political strategizing was well developed and I appreciated how deftly she tied that in with Beaufort's activities. I hope Pearson returns to this world again!
After dragging Jase from his home to stand trial before the queen, Kazi knows his family will not welcome her back with open arms. Even if the two of them are in love and committed to forever.
Kazi is more afraid of Jase’s family than she is of Death who stalks her.
On their way to Tor’s Watch, Kazi and Jase are ambushed and separated. Kazi is taken to Tor’s Watch where she sees the destruction wrought by their unseen enemy. The cathedral is in ruins. Soldiers are everywhere and Jase’s family is in hiding. Sure that Jase is dead, Kazi intends to honor her vow to protect his family and her directive to the queen to find the missing papers that produced the horrible weapons now used against them. All is not how it seems and Kazi needs all of her soldier and thief skills to outsmart her enemies and possibly reconcile with her new family.
This book was received as an ARC from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group-Henry Holt and Co. in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was spellbinded by the conflict and drama that both Kazi and Jase underwent when they were living the lives of outlaws. Now, that they are very much in love and together, they can put that life behind them, so they thought. Just when you thought everyone was living happily ever after, a new twist happens that haunts their past and then they jump right into being outlaws again. Former enemies become allies and frenemies and their worst enemies are now after them more than ever before. Each page had to have at least one shock factor and the description and language used throughout the book transported you into their world as if you were on the voyage with them.
We will consider adding this title to our YFantasy collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
