Overall I really enjoyed this, despite not realising that it was the third in the series. Great cast of characters and lots of suspenseful moments. A pleasant, easy read!
The Lonely Hearts Crime Club is the third book and it grabs you from the beginning and does not let go until the very end.
It has all of the ingredients to make this a fascinating mystery: Ella the alcoholic pregnant woman, her neighbors, a vulnerable youth, a failed actress, a cameraman with secrets, an unsolved mystery and a devastating truth.
I'm telling you this is a great read and one I highly recommend.
I enjoyed this book alot. The writing was great no over describing everything which usually puts me off books. The suspense led to a great ending and a great story. Would read more from this author.
My thanks to the Publishers via NetGalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review. I have had this book sat on my Kindle for some time and thought it was about time that I got round to reading it.
I gave this a 3 stars or 6/10. This is not the first book that I have read by Tanya Bullock, I have previously read Desperately Seeking Normal and my review of it can be read on my blog.
This is a cosy story, at it's heart is a crime that has occurred against an elderly lady, as she was beaten up and left with the injuries that she had sustained at the hands of the perpetrator. As a group of apparent misfits and lonely people living near her begin to group together to try and solve the mystery as to who did this and why this has happened to her, their lives begin to link together. Can they solve the crime before anyone else falls victim or was this a one off intentional assault?
Told from the POV of multiple characters as they become acquainted with one another in an attempt to try and solve the crime. They are all flawed in their own way and have problems of their own of one type or another. Who among them can be trusted and are any of them the actual perpetrator? This was a gentle story that kept you guessing and easily kept me turning page after page in order to find out what was happening. Told in small chapters this I felt was the Authors intention.
Looking forward to reading more books by this Author in due course.
Who would want to attack elderly Aggie and leave her for dead in her own home? That is preciously what the lonely hearts crime club, a group of mismatched people in the same apartment building, are setting out to find out, Ella, Ethan, William and Birdie are completely different, but all need to discover who would harm their neighbor. I initially was not a fan of the slow pace, descriptiveness of this novel, but once the action kicks into gear, I found myself fully invested and was even taken surprise by the ending, which rarely happens! I loved how unique each character was and will definitely be reading more from Tanya Bullock.
I throughly enjoyed this book. I liked the characters, the suspense and the writing style. I would definitely read more by this author.
I throughly enjoyed this book. I liked the cast of characters. I liked the suspense. I liked the writing style. I would read more by this author. It isn't what I usually read but it did not disappoint
A great story written in a unique style. One of the tenants living on the 19th floor is attacked and killed. Four other tenants come together to figure out why someone would kill her. The story builds from the perspective of each of the four tenants. Each has their own problems that must be overcome to find the criminal. How they put aside their everyday lives and work together is a very good story in itself. This could easily become a series.
I loved this book. All neighbourhoods have an eclectic mix of people in them, and I can imagine a tower block being such a neighbourhood.
I liked the change of person per chapter, and how their lives entwined.
I enjoyed the mix of characters, and having an ASD child within our family, I acknowledge their lack of recognition to feelings and facial expressions.
The story went along at a good pace, and I could identify the characters easily.
One of my new favorite books! This author has such a way with words the pages flew by in no time! I can’t wait to see the next work by this author! This was such a joy to read!
The Lonely Hearts Crime Club was a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting mystery/ thriller. It was quite an emotional book and it had several twists that I really didn't see coming. The characters were good and well drawn and were the focus of the novel, I would highly recommend this book.
Absolutely loved this book thrilling and twisty!!
Fantastic characters and the story moved with so much pace!!
Cannot wait for more from this author!
I received The Lonely Hearts Crime Club by Tanya Bullock as an ARC from NetGalley. This novel tells the story of a misfit group of residents of an inner city apartment building who band together to determine how their neighbor was attacked. Bullock delves into each character's back story and how they ended up in this apartment building. The books starts out a little slow but the mystery was compelling and I was completely surprised by the ending. All in all a good read.
Vivid imagery, beautifully written and captivating. Thoroughly enjoyed and very much recommended. One I will definitely reread.
Such a brilliant book.
Absolutely loved the characterization and the plot was such fluid and vivid in imagery.
The initial chapters felt a bit slow for a mystery but as the characters evolved, I couldn't stop.
Definitely recommend.
This was an excellent mystery novel that definitely made me stop and think, with some red herrings thrown in along the way. Absolutely loved it!
A quick multiple viewpoint mystery with a quirky cast of characters. It wasn’t the book I was expecting but was still a good read. Give it a chance.
This is an interesting approach to a mystery. Told through several different characters' POVs, as it unfolds you learn more and more about the characters themselves. Ultimately, I think it will work well for mystery readers looking for a light puzzle to unwind.
I stumbled upon this book on Netgalley and thought it sounded fun. I rally loved the cover and the description made me think great mystery read. It was a mystery but it was more about the characters and their lives. I loved the idea of the residents solving the crime and the title really does fit perfectly with the read. I enjoyed this read.
There are a group of residents that live in the building. Some are there with the help of a social worker because of their circumstances and some are just there for a change in life. There are 4 main characters that get together to solve a crime that happened in their building. An elderly lady was attacked and is in the hospital in a coma. These 4... whom barely know each other get together to find out who and why.
There were some really great things that I loved with this read and then there were a few things that kept me from loving this read.
The things that kept me from loving the read. I was in the mood for more of a mystery. The synopsis and the title makes it sound like a mystery and the solving of that said mystery. The mystery and the solving was there but not enough. The book didn't focus on this aspect as much as I wanted it to.
The start was a bit slow and confusing for me. I love multiple POVs but if they aren't done well then they can be a tad confusing. This was one of those. Only at the beginning. Now part of what made this book slow at the beginning was also the part that developed the characters so I would get to know whose POV I was reading from. So it was kind of like a double edge sword. I would have liked to see more happen at the beginning... more excitement and less lessons of the past from each character.. but in doing this a more developed voice for each character. Each character did have their own distinguished voice but it took me a bit to find those.
Now what I liked...
I liked the group that were in this book. I loved each and every flawed character that there was. I enjoyed their struggles, their brokenness, and their life. I enjoyed getting to know each and every one of them. They each were very different and lived very different lives, but they all lived in the same building and had the same goal. To find out who attacked their neighbor.
The mystery was good too. I don't know if it was a shock to me for the reveal because I wasn't trying hard... due to the focus was not on the mystery, or if was just that well done. Either way... I had no clue who done it. I was thinking the entire time that it was one of the residents but I couldn't decide who and never did have a why. So the ending was a total surprise.
The book really had some great writing. It was well plotted and well put together and written smoothly. Even though it was a bit slow and confusing at the beginning... once it was past that I was so totally into the stories of these residents.
My only main complaint.... I think this should be a series... multiple books with different mysteries being solved by the residents of this building. I think it would make a great series!
I quite enjoyed this little gem.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for providing a free copy for an honest review.
First the cover is an eye catcher and that's big with me..or else I wpnt even stop to read the blurb lol
I came into this a lover of crime mysteries of the Agatha Christie style. This is not Agatha . Its definitely more gritty and the characters are not the easiest to like. I can usually dig deep enough to like a few . But the plot moved quickly. There was also no one *detective* and I'm on the fence about that. But the mystery itself kept me reading.
