I really tried with this book, but I couldn't get into it. It was boring and I didn't enjoy the storyline. It might be more enjoyable for people who are familiar with the show. The artwork was nice and I loved the cover.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel, which shows the events of Lev Grossman's novel The Magicians from the POV of character Alice Quinn. If you're familiar with the book, you'll be fascinated by this new take on the story, starting with Alice's arrival at Brakebills and culminating with the thoughts and experiences of the quasi-Alice she becomes at the end of the novel. The artwork of the graphic novel allows for readers to literally see how other readers imagined that characters and the places and the events of the original, and the book overall is a great addition to any Magicians' fan's library.
This story was unquestionably going to be that of a favorite.
I’m in love with the artwork, and storyline. Now I’ve not yet read the full magiancian series, or watched the show. But after this I surely will for the both of them. I only hope more graphic novels come for this story and that the author and artist continue with it because the both of them did an incredible job.
You could simply go into this without knowing much at all about its origins, it’s fast, witty, heart wrenching and a tale that should be read.
*thank you to Netgalley and BOOM! Studios for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
2 stars.
I didn't enjoy this. I found it a bit too boring and the artwork just didn't appeal to me. I do have a positive thing to say about it though and that's that I really like the cover and that is my reason for this being 2 stars and not 1. Unfortunately this was not for me.
There’s a good chance that you might have heard of The Magicians before. It is a well known series written by Lev Grossman involving a group of students who discovers a land they thought that was originally written in a book. They also happen to deal with magic as well.
I have only read the first book in the series while having the second book sitting in my TBR. I am a fan of the TV adaption and prefer the show over the books. I caught my attention when I noticed there was now a graphic novel adaption of the series. I just wanted to see how it would look like in this format, compared to the TV and to my original thoughts when reading the series for the first time.
Alice’s Story is mainly The Magicians (first book) from Alice’s point of view. It was nice to see another point of view from the story I have seen and read before. If you have already read the series or have seen the show, most of graphic novel will be familiar to you. I am sure there are some differences between the versions, but I did not notice any. They’re probably just small differences.
Alice’s Story is really as good as an adaption can get. It really follows the original source and the details are great. I only wished that the pacing in this version was a bit quicker, but I’m leaving that as a personal opinion. This version has everything from the first book. If you’re a fan of the series, books, or either, I am pretty sure you’ll enjoy this graphic novel as well.
Graphic novels are most young people's first introduction to reading by and for themselves. This book not only tells the story in an engrossing manner, the art is outstanding. The authors/ artists have done a fantastic job of bringing the story to life.
This is a fantasy book which is usually right up my alley, but this book had way too much going on. It relied on violence, curse words, and sex to make it interesting. Definitely not appropriate for students. I did not connect with the characters or the story line.
Unique story about a familiar character from a beloved series. The graphics were amazing and really captured the movement of the story and dark side of the characters.
I am afraid I wasn't that impressed with the book. I absolutely loved the art, it was very well made but the contest had me loose interest a bit fast.
It could be because I'm not familiar with the original stories about the Magicians and therefore lost something, but I couldn't seem to stay interested.
This is an interesting adaptation, but overall it wasn't for me. I"ll still be recommending this one to our patrons.
I enjoyed this graphic novel, but it was not a radical departure from the source material. Changing the point-of-view added very little to the story, and I wish the scope was expanded to later in the series to points when Alice was not a part of the main narrative.
For fans of Lev Grossman's 'The Magicians'there a lot here. It tells the story of the first book from Alice's perspective. People not familiar with the novel, or at least the SyFy series based on Grossman's books won't get a lot out of this, but it's definitely a fun read for those who are. While the plot doesn't diverge hugely from the original, it is interesting to see Alice's point of view. We get to know a bit more about her thoughts, and her mindset when entering Brakebills. The art is simple yet effective, and while some of the dialogue did feel a little clunky, overall the structure and writing were interesting and effective.
Received a digital ARC of this book via NetGalley.
I’ve read the first book in Lev Grossman’s The Magicians series and have seen most of the first two seasons of the tv show. I always liked Alice’s character. This graphic novel gives the reader Alice’s perspective of the first book. It’s not as in-depth as Grossman’s work, storyline wise, but it gives the reader a feel for how Alice thought and felt prior to entrance at Brakebills, while in school, and in the land of Fillory. The artwork was nice. Would like to see an adaptation of Julia’s perspective one day.
E-arc provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I come from the original series and the tv show and let me tell you how much I loved this graphic novel.
The style was amazing and I'm usually not a graphic novel person but I don't know why I found this one not as overwhelming.
The story is what fans of the series expect since we're not new to this.
Can't wait to buy the physical copy!
I really expected to like this, but didn't really connect with it. I thought the original novel was OK. Half of this seemed like teen angst without much interesting happening. The other half just didn't seem interesting. In addition, the dialog was average or not good, and the art work, while a good format for the content, was also average. Good effort by the author and artist; and the story rung true to the original novel. It was just not for me.
I really appreciate the ARC for review!
This was a surprisingly great story. I've heard of the T.V. adaptions of The Magicians, but never watched the show. -- perhaps now I should start! This graphic novel got me hooked on all things magic. The world-building, the complex character development, and even the awesome spells were some of the things that lured me into this story. Alice was awesome, and I hated the ending (yes, I love sappy endings!). This book also made me fall in love with graphic novels all over again, and I would recommend it to anyone from upperclassmen high school age onward.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this eARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I really enjoyed reading this Magicians graphic novel. I haven't read the book series, but I have watched the television show. I wasn't a huge fan of Alice before reading this graphic novel. I really like how the reader learns more about her backstory and gets to see the events from her perspective. Her ending is the same, which is okay, but it felt like there was a great sense of closure instead of loss. The artwork was also really amazing. I would recommended this books, and it made me interested in reading the other novels in the series.
Thank you NetGalley and Publisher for this early copy.
I have not read The Magicians series or watched the show but you don't need to if you want to read this graphic novel. I liked the art style and how lengthy it was. I will be checking out more from Sturges. I recommend checking it out.
