Being a very online person? To put it lightly, it's hell. Whether you have ten followers or ten thousand, there's a good chance you've been harassed, called names, commented on, trolled, catcalled - and that's just what happens in the comments section. Pre-internet, people had a modicum of control over the narrative of their experience with harassment. Now? All bets are off. You can be doxxed in under five minutes if you make the wrong person mad.
Harrowing, inspiring, a must read for anyone participating in the digital age.
Thank you to Netgalley and Plume for advanced access to this title!
this book is timely, with the metoo movement and women feeling more empowered to share their experiences. This book encompasses different ways that people can be victimized and takes back power and gives people more control over the situation. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to my friends and family so they have a way to better understand all of the cards that can be stacked against us in the fight for justice. I think that many times people dont realize all the ways with technology that people experience abuse.
Goldberg is officially one of my new favorite people on this planet. I was cheering so hard throughout this book.
This is a MUST read for everyone and I hope that these stories and cases begin to change laws surrounding sexual autonomy and rights.
I hate that Nobody's Victim needed to be written, but the value of awareness--about both the way sexual violence happens, and the tools to fight it (including the law)--can't be overstated. If you've ever wondered "what recourse would I have if this happened to me?", Carrie Goldberg's book is worth the read.
I received this book in exchange for a honest review from NetGalley.
This book is powerful, informative and one of the most difficult books I have ever read. It is a very frank discussion about the world we live in and the many ways that people can be sexually victimized. I think that everyone, especially anyone making decisions about out laws should read this book and be informed of what is going on.
All women must read this book ! I admit many of the cases were hard for me to read but its one of the most valuable tools we women have for protection. Especially women that are dating they must read this book and pass it along to all the young women and all women you know . This is a critical body of work for our time in protecting women. Carrie Goldberg is a attorney specializing in online stalkers, blackmail by past boyfriends and cyber stalking and revenge porn. If you think this cannot happen to you think again and read this book.
I highly recommend this book for all women to read. We live in frightening times where these crimes are happening in record numbers by perverts, stalkers , trolls and psycho men are out there dating women using the internet for revenge and to ruin lives of those they dated , women they work with and women that turned them down. . Get educated by reading this book of real life cases from Carrie herself and her law firm. She is doing great law work to protect women and this book is a critical reading. Before you go on a date or even consider dating, read this book. Thank you Carrie for your work on behalf of women and for this important body of work. I highly recommend this book.
In a world where people are so easily hid behind their screens, and exploit that, this book covers the mechanisms of online abuse, and major events therein. Essential for navigating the internet as a woman, and knowing what exactly the angry internet hiveminds are capable of.
It is wild to me that we live in a world where you might need a lawyer that deals specifically with psychos, stalkers, pervs, and trolls, and yet, here we are. I love how this book was formatted; dividing up the types of abusers Carrie Goldberg's firm fights against, and then giving examples (both personal and professional) really gets right to the point. I love how honest and, at times, painful this was to read. You can tell that Goldberg is passionate about getting justice for victims, and reading about all the things she does and takes part of makes me feel hopeful about the future. This brought awareness both to things I had heard about when they were happening and things I never knew occurred. I love the fact that this book lists a variety of resources at the end for people who may need them, it was a nice touch.
I do have one major issue with this, and that the fact that she talks about, in detail, mass shooters and the like when I feel it wasn't really necessary. They were used as examples of men excusing their awful behavior because of the way others (women) treated them, not to the actual cases involved. I wasn't a fan of the way that was dealt with, and I think the book would have been just as impactful if those examples weren't used at all.
I would highly recommend!
I really enjoyed a great many things about this book. Characters were fleshed out and the plot was well spaced. Some of the secondary storylines could've used a bit more page space but all in all an enjoyable read!
Carrie Goldberg's book is a powerful, must-read. Sharing her intimate and thoughtful insight into the world of revenge porn, sexual abuse/assault and privacy violation is inspiring. I hope this book serves as a key reminder to all survivors -- and as Goldberg reminds us -- "even if you don't know what to call [what happened to you]'-- that you're a survivor and a warrior.
The work that Goldberg's law firm is doing is life-changing and life-saving. As this book details the very real legal cases in assault, blackmail, and extortion, I hope it arms other survivors with courage, confidence and most importantly hope.
Carrie Goldberg is such a badass, I just want to start by saying that. Her personal story is incredibly moving and really gave an immediate connection to a really complicated topic. Her writing is very self-assured, confident and engaging. I loved that she walks you through the various types of abusers and really provides context both legally and emotionally on why these issues are really important. The law has clearly not caught up with our current technology. The universal truth of this book is that sexual harassment, stalking, sexploitation can happen to anyone.
However, there were some points that I really didn't care for when it came to her language choices. Her repetitious use of "psycho" was very grating and when she chose to use this spelling of a$$hole because it really took the momentum out of the writing. All of the sudden, I felt as though I was reading a book written by a middle school kid who thinks that if they spell it that way that they won't get in trouble with their parents.
Overall, this book is invaluable at this time. It reminds us that this world is corrupt and that it is key to speak out, to help others and to continue to push for reform.
An important read. Goldberg provides insight on what it means to be stalked and bullied in the digital age. Using real life cases she has worked on, as well as personal experience, Goldberg brings to light the ugly truth of how much catching up both our legal systems and cultural biases still need to do.
I am loving the influx of "me too" inspired feminist titles lately; unfortunately, I had technical difficulties downloading this one. I could get the gist of some of the content, but there were too many errors and missing letters to get everything.
I heard about Carrie Goldberg’s new book, Nobody’s Victim, from The Cut’s podcast, The Cut on Tuesdays. From the moment she started talking, I was incredibly intrigued. I knew I had to get my hands on this book. The book did not disappoint. Carrie Goldberg is a lawyer who specializes in cases of harassment, revenge porn, sexual violence, and much more. This book is part call to arms, part manifesto, part resource guide for women. Carrie tells the stories of a number of her clients, stringing together a narrative of how crimes against women that are facilitated via the internet are not taken seriously and the unwillingness of law enforcement and the platforms where it takes place to take it seriously. This book is the story of how one woman took her personal hell and turned it into a revolution. As a woman living in the age of social media and online dating, I found this book to be incredibly poignant.
ARC provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest and thoughtful review.
When I requested this book from Netgalley, I had no idea how engrossing, moving, unnerving, overwhelming, and important it would be. Nobody's Victim is Carrie Goldber's memoir of the work she has done as a Victim's Rights attorney. She represents clients that have been assaulted, humiliated, stalked, and harassed in the digital age - something that is crucial these days.
The stories of her clients gave me chills, and made each of the issues personal. The author's own stories were heartbreaking and inspirational, because they set her on a path forward.
In a fiercely feminist, accessible way, Goldberg tells readers that she believes, you are enough, and she won't stop fighting for you.
Such a hard book to read but one you need to read for your own good. It will make you mad as fuck but you need to pick it up and give it a go.
I found the use of "psycho" and "crazy" to be overdone, as well as inappropriate sometimes. For the most part, I liked the messages the author had about protecting oneself. I'm glad the author talked about different places to seek help, because that's not an easy thing to do, nor do some agencies know how to help. I will definitely be ordering for the library I work at. Thank you
An absolutely critical book. I think every man and woman should read this. It's so empowering to know what is out there to protect victims of these crimes, and where we need to improve the law. Goldberg is trustworthy and wants the best for those who have been wronged in the worst way.
This book is a difficult one to read but a must read for everyone! The subject matter is such an important one and the only way we are going to make strides in this area is if people are informed. It is so scary how easily someone can take over your life and make you look like the predator and not the victim. The author shares her own personal experience along with those of various clients she has worked with over the years. She is on a war path against sexual violence privacy violations (including revenge porn and sextortion). Thank you to Netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Dutton for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really want to give this book five stars, but the persistent use of "psycho" and crazy" to describe terrible, violent men was a little hard to overlook as someone who is trying to work on improving my language so as not to further stigmatize the mentally ill. The book is a vitally important one, though, as Goldberg writes clearly and passionately about the current legal landscape that sets up women to be victimized and revictimized by cyberstalkers, trolls, and plain old jerks. The resource list in the back should prove invaluable to anyone who is experiencing these kinds of problems, too.
