Evan, 11, fails to return home from school. His parents are thrown into their worst nightmare, their child has disappeared without a trace.
The feelings of despair and the agony Evan`s parents and grandparents suffer are believably portrayed by the author.
Then many months later Evan is found and reunited with his family, the struggle to come to terms with what has happened is almost as difficult as when he was missing.
Life will never be the same again for any of them.
Their fight back to a new normality is truly moving.
This book drew me in and evoked a host of emotions, a truly touching story, totally believable and really well written.
I shall definitely be watching out for more by this author.
Thanks to Netgalley and Headline for allowing me to read this as an ARC
A parent's worst nightmare usually concerns something happening to their child. Matt and Claire Ferrers enter this world when son Evan fails to return from school one afternoon and no one can find any trace of him. Everything unfolds gradually; periods of police inaction generally ignored while the minutiae and altered normality of family life is shown as a vital part of the Ferrers family's story.
This is a very gentle take on the horrors facing Evan, his mum, dad and grandparents but in no way trivialises it. Told from various points of view the members of the Ferrers family and the agonies they suffer are beautifully written. The police involved in the case aren't depicted as cold, foul-mouthed or fighting their own psychological battles but rather as concerned people working under considerable staffing and financial constraints their detractors don't take into account.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who prefers a less frantic take on crime fiction without lessening the impact it can have on anyone caught up in it.
This is an amazing book! It draws you in, increases your heart rate, takes you on an emotional rollercoaster and has you checking your loved ones are safe.
Evan was only 11 when he went to school one day but didn’t come home. His parents are devastated beyond their worst nightmare. Evan has vanished leaving no trace. They struggle to function, struggle to live. But time, life, moves on.
Then, many many months later Evan is found. Miraculously. Unbelievably. Mercifully. He is alive
Where did he go? Who took him? Why? What happened?
You are rooting for Evan, his family, his recovery. You are drawn in, breathless, hopeful, saddened, overwhelmed, shocked,
If you only read one book this year, make it this book.
One of the best books I have read for a long time.. The characters and events were totally believable and it was really well written. It was one of those book where you want to know what happens but you don't want to get to the end because it's so good you want it to continue!. I found myself waking up at 4 am and reaching for my Kindle. It was both a touching and exciting story and I must admit that I cried at the end. I definitely want to read more by this author.
If you read one book this year make sure it's Found! The characters in this are truly remarkable it's rare to find a book where every character is likeable, especially a thriller with police and a family. I loved that Erin approached the subject matter respectfully. I will be keeping a keen eye on her future work.
5/5 I would score higher if possible!
Enjoyable and a fun read!
The story caught my eye from the moment I read the blurb, and I just knew I wanted to read this book. I was not let down and can recommend this to everyone!
This is going to sound really weird but my main impression of this book is its gentle treatment of the subject matter. It's really well written and manages to be gripping without being grim ( not easy considering the subject matter). I'd like to see this detective team again.
I'm super grateful to this book because I've been in a bit of a reading funk the last couple of weeks and couldn't get into anything. I found this gripped me from the start and was an easy and enjoyable read. Evan is abducted on his way home from school and then turns up a few months later, traumatised by his experiences. I finished this in a few hours and thought it kept a good level of suspense throughout- would definitely recommend!
A great story with great understanding about the subject. I couldn’t put the book down. You could feel the frustration that the police felt when they had to put the case on hold when they had no more leads in such an important case, but there persistence payed off in the end.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. This was a real page turner and had me hooked right from the beginning to the end. Highly recommend.
Read this in one sitting, and it had me in tears at one point. It was challenging and upsetting at times, but the subject matter was handled delicately and didn't go into distressing unncessary details. I couldn't put it down, I was alternatively sad, happy and enraged and frustrated. An excellent read, highly recommended.
A heartfelt and gripping story. One thing that really shone through was the realism of the police work: slow, painstaking, full of dead ends, often relying on luck as much as anything, and constantly suffering from a lack of time and resources. It felt much more realistic than many other police procedurals I've read.
I found the choice of omniscient present tense an odd one, as it had the effect of detaching me from the story somewhat. There is so much emotion in this story and yet it's constantly held at a distance. I never felt really close to any of the characters.
All the same, I very much enjoyed the dual storyline of a family slowly healing from a terrible crime and the police trying to bring the criminals to justice.
