I enjoyed this addition to the series. Ditie is enjoying life with the kids and her relationship with Mason. Of course this all comes to a halt when Ditie's ex comes to town for a civil war re-enactment along with other med school classmates. When a cannon explodes and kills one of them it seems they are all suspects with reasons to kill.
I enjoyed the story, but the jealousy was a bit much and overdone in my opinion. I really did not guess who the culprit was until it was revealed at the end, lots of red herrings. This book also includes a few recipes for you to enjoy if you so choose.
"Into the Frying Pan" by Sarah Osborne is book two in Ditie Brown Mystery series.
I enjoyed this book and found protagonist pediatrician Ditie Brown who works at a refugee children's clinic in Atlanta, GA came across as wishy washy and easily manipulated (I could relate though) and from what I have read she wasn't this way in the first book so lets hope she will return as the strong independent woman in the next. I did like how Ditie interacted with the children in the clinic as well as Lucie and Jason though, she was thoughtful and caring towards them all. The side characters are wonderful as well, and you become invested in them, like Lureen her BFF who wouldn't want her as a friend.
There are twists and turns and red herrings but I guessed whodunnit fairly quickly. The story moves at a steady pace, and I had a hard time putting it down. I cant wait to return to Atlanta, Georgia and see how things are going...
There are recipes included for the dishes featured in the book. If you like a lively Southern cozy mystery with death and destruction you will enjoy this series.
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
an enjoyable book. I found a few spots to be redundant, but really enjoyed the interaction between the adults and the kids. #IntoTheFryingPan #NetGalley
I enjoyed the mystery, the setting and most of the main characters. Most of the time they were realistic, I just have a problem with characters who can't say no to other characters. The mystery kept me guessing and I liked the interaction between the main characters. Even though this was the second book in the series, I didn't feel lost about what might have gone on before.
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review. - I look forward to the next in the series.
Into the Frying Pan is the second book in Sarah Osborne’s Ditie Brown Mystery series. The characters are three dimensional and likable, and the storyline is well plotted and complex. This is a quick and entertaining read. There is a limited suspect pool, but no shortage of twists and red herrings.
Mabel Aphrodite Brown, whose nickname is Ditie, is a pediatrician in Atlanta, Georgia who works at a refugee clinic. She has one sibling, Tommy, and two fur babies, a dog named Hermoine and a cat named Majestic. Ditie’s friend, Ellie, was recently murdered and she’s in the process Ellie’s two children, almost nine-year-old Lucie and five-year-old Jason. Her good friend, Lurleen, watches the children whenever Ditie needs her. Ditie is dating Detective Mason Garrett, and Lurleen is dating Mason’s friend and private investigator, Danny. Ditie’s old flame, Phil Brockton, and a group of their friends from med school are in town for a Civil War reenactment that turns deadly when a cannon misfire and Phil’s med school rival, Carl Thompson, is killed on the first day of the event. The authorities aren’t sure if it was an unfortunate accident or murder, and Phil believes he’ll be their prime suspect if the death is ruled a murder. When the event is canceled, the group attends a nearby reenactment where another classmate is shot and killed. The green-eyed monster flares up in Mason when Ditie seems to be doing everything Phil askes of her. Ditie and her friends start searching for clues and soon discover a trail of lies, deceit, manipulation, and other unthinkable behavior committed by people she thought she knew.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
Fans of the first book in this series will be happy with this latest instalment.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Enjoyed the first book in the series. Enjoyed the character development continuing in this second book. Strong, interesting characters that capture you. Family, foster children, a reenactment make for a bit of an unusual combination, but very enjoyable.
This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
Dietie is such a wonderful character and I felt an instant connection with her.
Her two foster children added so much fun to the story that I was actually sad when it ended.
Mason and Lurleen are strong characters as well and I enjoyed the parts they played in the book.
I’m very excited to see what happens next in this story.
This is more of a cozy than the first book in the series (you're fine with it as a standalone.). Ditie is a physician who faced an ethical dilemma the first time out but here is mostly focused on who killed both an med school classmate and then another person (no spoilers). Those who have been to or seen people involved with re-enactments know the atmospherics are right. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
