Rounded up from 3.5 stars with an initial boost for the cover art! This book is a quick and breezy read. The story is told via text, email, journal entry, personal letter and more. The variety helps it move along quickly and give the reader a multifaceted view of the story. Crystal is an entertaining lead although a bit impetuous at times. Instead of doing the product testing on her sister Lisa's new android companion herself, she matches him up with her mom with some hilarious and bittersweet results. An entertaining summer read that touches on how our relationship with our mother frames our views on life.

3.5⭐ rounded up
I was immediately charmed by this cute debut read. Crystal encounters some tough breaks and makes some questionable choices in the beginning of this book. While her Mom is there to help her pick up the pieces, it comes with a price. Somehow she ends up being her asssistant for Margot's Mallows without the ability to say no. While I think the whole android thing wouldn't happen in real life, it was a unique way for Crystal to break free from her Mom a bit.
While this may not be one of those books you'll be thinking about days after reading, it's sure to give you a few laughs and leave you smiling at the end. The writing style was unique and it was easy to quickly read along. The book focused on the difficultly of trying to please an overbearing parent and how to turn it into a healthy relationship. Crystal and Margot's growth throught this book is what makes it so appealing and you'll be rooting for them to figure things out. Overall I found this book to be a fun, enjoyable read and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick escape from reality.
Mom's Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway is a funny and unique book that I really enjoyed. Crystal, who is 25 years old, is unable to say no to her mother, who is single and lonely. When Crystal becomes homeless, unemployed, and single she moves back in with her mother. This book is told in the form of texts, chats and emails, which I found fun. This book kept me intrigued, and it was a quick read too. Looking forward to reading more books by this author.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and the publisher. Thank you.
Started this book but couldn't finish it It was not the type of book I would normally read and could not get into it.
This one was a DNF for me.
It was a case of it's ne not the book. I just felt really disconnected from the story due to the style of writing. The messages and the emails style of storytelling just wasn't for me.
I am sure plenty of others will fall in love with this story.
Only putting 1 star as i can't leave unrated
Slightly random but amusing light read with the inevitable happy ending. Great easy read for when your in that mood.
I received a copy of this from Galbadia Press in exchange for my honest review.
This was a cute, fast read. It explores the relationships between mothers and daughters and also refinding yourself. My only complaint was that the character of Lisa said “aww” to much. Other than that it was a very enjoyable read
This novel started out a little slow for me; it took a little bit to get use to the writing style. This book is written in a series of texts messages, journal entries and emails.
The story deals with the relationship between Mom Margot and daughters Crystal and Lisa. Add in a boyfriend on a long hike, a home business and an Android boyfriend..
Happy to say the story picked up and became a page turner. The relationships with the Mom and the daughters was so realistic that this author could have been writing about my life!
There was some romance as well as some erotic dinosaur sex! This ended up being a pretty good read after all!
I struggled a bit with this book, unfortunately I was expecting more.
I really liked the idea of going between the mothers entries and the daughters conversations, the concept was very good. However I found it hard to keep with it and found myself skimming through the book a fair bit.
I didn't manage to finish it and closed the book just about half way through and It's not something I do often.
I often enjoy an easy read and a silly story, especially if told well. This book, however, really did not go anywhere with its story and held no interest for me. Maybe I am missing its point, and even though it is not badly written, it really did nothing for me.
This book was hysterical, quick to read, and I liked the format. The addition of Rapunzel, dinosaur sex, an Android, and a dinosaur drawing at the end all made it work for me. The only reason I knocked off 1 star is because I was not completely thrilled with Crystal's resolution with her fiance. But overall, I am really happy I received the ARC and got a chance to read this book.

I am a sucker for epistolary novels, seeing how a story develops based on bits and pieces from various sides, so this was totally my jam. And I loved it - it's lighthearted and a quick read, but touches on deeper subjects like independence (on both sides!) within mother-daughter relationships, finding your path in life, the search for companionship and love... and of course there's a happy end, but not without a few enjoyable twists and turns. Plus how many books have you read which include robots, Rapunzel and dinosaur sex? I could have done with less of the Rapunzel story, but otherwise - great read!
I absolutely loved this book. It was adorable, laugh-out-loud hilarious, and it repeatedly made me stop and check that these conversations did not happen between me and my own mother! It was a super fast read, but it carried so much emotion and feeling that I was able to connect with Crystal, Lisa, and their mother. I really loved the unique story line and the way the book was written, in the same way I deal with my own relationships--through text, email, even writing in a journal. And I still cannot get over the erotic romance book about dinosaurs!! Mom's Perfect Boyfriend was a cute, heart-warming story that I found myself connecting with easily. I cannot wait to read more from Crystal Hemmingway!
This was an unexpected treat to read. It was a humorous tale of mothers and daughters and finding our way. Throw in the desire for a relationship (for both the mother and daughter) and the opportunity to test drive a new, realistic android (aka the title character) and we've got a light-hearted, engaging story. Through a series of unexpected events (her boyfriend needs a "break" as he does his own soul searching and working for a company that's downsizing, Crystal has to move home and live with her mom. And she's a little worried about this. She's hoping to write a novel, but gets pulled into her mom's new business endeavor (along with a number of other activities). Given the circumstances, can you blame her if she thinks a surprise android for her mom is the perfect solution? And doesn't tell her mom? This story is told through communications- journal entries, chapters of Crystal's story, letters, texts, emails. I love this format of a book- it's such a fun glimpse into someone else's world. I thought this was a great way to spend a couple of hours and, if you are in need pop a fun story, I totally recommend it.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I like this style of story telling and have enjoyed other novels with a similar format but I could not get into this one at all. It did not flow as well as I thought it would and I could not really connect to anyone. Not my fave but a quick one to read through.
Loved it it was a little hard to connect with at first but it gets better. The daughter trying to find her mom a boyfriend is funny and weird at the same time but I think everyone should read this
This is one of the strangest books I’ve read in a while. Marketed as a chick lit style novel where Crystal tries to find her mother the perfect boyfriend, soon we’re offered robots, Rapunzel and dinosaur sex. I’m not even joking.
The first half of this book almost made me DNF it. I was on the verge of writing it off as a no win. But I pushed through, I persevered and it ended on a much higher note. In fact, I almost enjoyed it.
The mother, Margot, was written brilliantly. She was the most annoying character who stressed me out so much, but she was so believable I found myself cringing at her actions. She was so funny and annoying all at same time.
Plus, Crystal Hemmingway drew a dinosaur at the end, which gets a whole extra star for me, because I love dinosaurs so much.
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in an exchange for an honest review. This in my way influenced my opinions on this book (it was the dinosaur picture at the end that did it for me!)
Mom's Perfect Boyfriend was a quick and fun read. Perfect for Summer reading. I really enjoy the format of being written in texts, IM's, and journal entries. The mother daughter relationship in this book is quite funny, and downright silly sometimes. This book make for an enjoyable break from my usual drama type reads.
I love episolatory books. Thank you netgalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Crystal's boyfriend decided to take a break after her mom hijacked their vacation. She also got laid off. So she thought she'd take this time off to finish her Rapunzel retelling novel. With no job and less money and no other go, she ended up being with her mom. What she thought would be free time wasn't what she expected it to be. With her mom's new passion for baking and selling in Sunday markets, gave Crystal no time to write her novel. Her life was turned upside down. Crystal signed up for a smart companion - a trial robot, on her mom's behalf. After Adam, the Robot came into her mom's life, Crystal's help was no longer needed. But her mom started liking Paul.
This story is about a mother-daughter relationship. They both have their own problems to be dealt with. Crystal's story of Rapunzel and Mother Gothel resembles her life as her own mom drives her crazy and is overbearing. It's not like Crystal doesn't like her mom or vice versa. They just don't balance things well. Crystal's sister keeps her mom at arm's length but is close to Crystal. I don't like her much.
I've found all three of them being selfish at one point or another. There isn't much room for romance as it's mostly a family drama.
It's some sweet moments. I won't say this one is fast paced but it's not slow paced either. There are dragging in some parts and rushing in other. The story is engaging but I just haven't felt connected. It's just a happy, fun and a light hearted read for me.
I am sorry to say that this book was a waste of time. I was hoping for a fun, lighthearted and humorous book but this book is not that. The book begins with Crystal’s mother Margot having forced herself on Crystal’s romantic Hawaii vacation with her boyfriend Dave. Obviously Dave is not very happy about this. With such a beginning I was expecting Margot to be overbearing and Crystal to be a too kind pushover but apparently the author was not paying attention to how this book begins. Margot is a very sweet and kind woman who somehow raised ungrateful and spiteful daughters who don’t appreciate her and always think the worst of everything she does. This obviously makes it hard to care about Crystal.
Of course this all takes place over emails, texts and journal entries. I’ve read other books in this format that were fun but this one was slow and boring. This could also be because the author chose to have Margot and Crystal writing long and tedious journal entries about their lives. Even worse are the excepts from Crystal’s attempt to write a novel. Now the novel is obviously an example of how Crystal is feeling about her mother and Dave but it’s annoying to wade through.
Given the title of the novel I was expecting more about the robot but he doesn’t show up until about the halfway point. It’s a hard concept to swallow that Crystal is going to set her mother up with a robot. How do you set your mother up to be left heartbroken by a robot? Especially such a kind woman? This might have worked if the mother was going to be as overbearing as I expected and the daughter needed to distract her but that’s not the case here.
We learn so much about the mother and her daughters but there is no real growth in the characters. By the end they are still keeping secrets from each other and not in a good place with each other. This is certainly not a rom-com type of novel either. Most of the time Crystal is quite down. It also seems strange that we don’t know more about the girl’s’ father. He’s never mentioned except as an ex. He’s not a thought at holidays which makes him seem absent but it’s not mentioned. There’s a mention of him not paying for school which only frustrates the ability of a reader to care for the daughters who have no appreciation for their hard working single mother.
Unfortunately there is nothing redeeming here so save yourself the time spent reading this novel and find something better.
