This one was just a bit too bland at the end. Usually I like Nancy’s stories because they’re so good natured and heart warming but something was just missing here. Still a 4 but not quite there.
Rounding up from 2.5 stars
This one fell a bit flat for me towards the end. I love beach reads but there needs to be some depth to carry you through. I wondered if this would have been better on audiobook, or maybe actually read AT the beach and not upstairs in my bedroom under my weighted blanket while it was snowing again in April.
An easy going story about two girls who grow up on Nantucket and want to be writers. We follow then through school and first loves to parental care and childbirth. A poignant chapter about the retired mother needing help elevated the book.
I enjoyed this beach read by Nancy Thayer. She always leaves you longing for a trip to the shore to feel the sun on your face and the sand in your shoes.
I enjoy Nancy Thayer's stories - they are light, escapist, beach reads. This one should have had all the right notes - a wonderfully depicted Nantucket setting, a successful protagonist going home to mend fences and take care of her mom, a story about forgiveness. It was fine, but honestly, by the end I couldn't figure out WHY Keely wanted to patch things up with Isabelle because she wasn't really a likable character.
I don't feel like the supporting characters were as fleshed out as I'd like them to be, either, and maybe if I knew a little more about Isabelle's thinking I could have sympathy for her, but part of me was rooting for Keely to say "bye, bish."
HOWEVER - Thayer did keep me turning the pages, and it was a nice escape, so for that, I'll give the book 3-1/2 stars. (rounding to 4 for review purposes)
I can always count on author Nancy Thayer to bring the heartwarming beach reads I’ve come to love from her, and Surfside Sisters was just what I was hoping for.
Set along the Nantucket shore, this was the perfect summer read I was looking to read. Told from the perspective of Keely. from childhood to present day.
I recommend this light women’s fiction to fans of Thayer and those looking for a sweet story.
Thanks to Netgalley and Ballantine Books for the free copy. All opinions are my own
This was a perfect summer read. I devoured it in a day while on vacation. Despite their flaws, I liked both Keely and Isabelle. The plot was a little soap opera-y, but then again, what great summer novel isn’t?
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Surfside Sisters is one of my favorite books of the year so far. It probably helped that I read it while at the beach on vacation myself. I also loved that although the character was dealing with some heavy personal conflicts, the book stayed largely light and optimistic. Exactly what my year needs more of: optimism!
I couldn’t put it down. It took me completely into their lives and back to Nantucket which is always magic. While a quick and lovely read, I highly recommend this book.
This book seemed like the perfect beach read, but it fell short for me. I have read other books from this author and enjoyed them. This book was hard to finish. To me, it felt like a young adult book. I wish the author would have gone into more detail about the characters, especially the main character. However, the detail on the surroundings was awesome.
Another excellent Nancy Thayer novel. I found this one heartwarming and light read perfect for your next beach trip. I will definitely be recommending this one to my friends and family!
Super fun and thoughtful...a great way to sit back in the sun and read away the day! Author is one I have enjoyed before and I plan on continuing with.
Ballantine Books and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Surfside Sisters. I was under no obligation to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Keely and Isabelle were surfside sisters, best friends who dreamed of writing the perfect novels. When tragedy strikes Keely, her best friend's reaction stuns her. As the friends drift apart, can their hopes for the future ever bring their friendship full circle?
This beach read is really no different than the many other novels I have read in this genre. The author tries to pack too much information into a relatively short novel, so it is almost like a resume of Keely's life instead of a naturally evolving story. On the plus side, it is a quick read and did not get bogged down. On the negative side, I really could not picture the surfside community and felt little connection to the characters. Additionally, some of the realism was taken away, especially the way that the Maxwell's treated Keely and her mother. Having been a part of their lives since Keely and Isabelle were small, this departure in their actions did not ring true. There was nothing that really made this book stand out and, because of this, I would not recommend Surfside Sisters to other readers.
Keely is traveling for her book your.she is glad to be an accomplished author but incredibly lonely. She tryed to date after her move to New York Keelys best friend growing up was Isabelle . She envied her family and had a crush on her brother. I went back and forth on whether I liked Isabelle.I liked seeing the changes in Keely and Isabelle’s friendship and what happened in Their love lovelives
Nancy Thayer is an amazing Storyteller! Every single book I read of hers is great! Can't wait for her next book!!
Surfside Sisters is a light beach read set in Nantucket. It's light and fun but has a full plot of characters and romantic drama. Perfect summer read that you don't have to think too much on.
Surfside Sisters follows Keely throughout the first third of her life - beginning with childhood and her relationship with her best friend, following to young adult years and the fallout of a friendship, and finally to finding herself when she finally comes home. The only negative I have about this book is that it ended too soon - I wanted so much more!! I want to know how Keely's life continues!! This is another perfect summer read from one of the summer queens of reading, Nancy Thayer!
Another wonderful books by Nancy Thayer! I love the complicated and insightful relationship between these friends. What a true depiction of the damage young romantic relationships can do to friendship. Often as adults we can very much relate to being estranged from that one person who truly was a real best friend. After a long estrangement can that friendship be found and brought back to life? Do we really change that much as adults or are the people we are deep down truly who we were as teens? Read Surfside sisters and decide for yourself!
I love Nancy Thayer and I've not come across a book of hers that I haven't been head over heels for. I love the setting of Nantucket, it whisks me away to another place I've always wanted to visit. Thayer's books have a calming effect on me and can ease my mind even at my most anxious of times. The characters, as always, were likable and endearing. I would recommend this book and Nancy Thayer to everyone I know!
Nancy Thayer is definitely well known for her beach reads but unfortunately, Surfside Sisters is not one of her better books. It's okay, but that's all it is. Okay.
