Nancy Thayer’s books mean summertime romance, and the Nantucket beachy setting keeps the story grounded. I wasn’t as fond of Isabelle as Keely was, and at times grew impatient with Keely’s need to be loved and accepted by someone so insecure and petty. And I also wish the romance with Sebastian had been more developed, as it seemed sometimes that Keely was more invested in being part of the Maxwell family than truly in love with Sebastian. But this is a pleasant summer beach read that will satisfy Thayer fans and keep us coming back each year for more, just like those who summer on Nantucket.
I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
I loved this book! This is the first book I've read by Nancy Thayer and I look forward to reading many more. The characters were developed, the plot was not too predictable and I love the Nantucket location. I highly recommend this book as a wonderful summer read!
I always look forward to Nancy Thayer's books and love the Nantucket setting. This book feels like a light beach read, but also has some deeper issues. There is a lot of adversity that the main character, Keely, goes through over the course of the book mixed in with successes to balance them out. I enjoyed the book and the setting and would recommend.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from Ballantine Books through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Surfside Sisters is the perfect summertime book. I loved the Nantucket setting. Nancy Thayer touches on the sensitive subject of depression in a very compassionate and real way. Nancy Thayer writes another satisfying story.
Nancy Thayer never disappoints. Surfside Sisters tells the tale of two women who have been friends since they were children. For everyone who has the friend that has become your biggest competitor, this book is for you.
I really enjoyed this book. The story moved pretty quickly and it was a fun read. The two best friends in this story, Isabella and Keely lived very different lives but had the same passion for writing. It was fun to watch the different paths their lives take in this story.

Keely Green has grown up as an only child living in Nantucket. Her life has been rather quiet, except when she is hanging out with her best friend, Isabelle. Isabelle's life is the polar opposite of Keely's. She has grown up in a privileged household on Nantucket. Her brother, Sebastian, is one of the most popular and charismatic boys in school. Although Keely and Isabelle have the love of books in common, their similarities end right about there. As Keely and Isabelle get older, Keely finds herself drawn to Sebastian, but doesn't want Isabelle to think that she is just like every other girl in school, so she keeps her attraction to him hidden. As they become teenagers and then adults growing up in a small town, there are problems between the two girls, especially when it comes to boys and competing as aspiring writers. Fast forward many years and Keely is living in New York as a published author and she has to return home to Nantucket to help her mother and reignite her latest novel she is working on. This all seems well and good until she has to face Isabelle, Sebastian, and her ex-boyfriend, Tommy. Nancy Thayer's Surfside Sisters is the kind of beach read I love. It's light, there's family drama, a gorgeous location, and a story of forgiveness between life long friends.
I absolutely adored Keely from the minute I met her in Surfside Sisters. Bookworms will especially love Keely and Isabelle's appreciation for the written word and their desire to be published authors. Their friendship really warmed my heart, that is until boys became an issue. Isabelle has always loved Tommy, a James Dean sort of person, who isn't the type of boy that her family would expect her to date. Things get awkward when he asks Keely to the prom; of course she turns him down, but still. There's a rift between them now. Then fast forward many years and Keely is home in Nantucket and Isabelle is at college. Insert Tommy in the equation and cue the drama. It doesn't help that they both have a desire to become published authors; nonetheless, I still really loved their relationship and was always rooting for them to reconcile.
Isabelle is a more complex character in Surfisde Sisters. I didn't always agree with her actions, but I still cared about her relationship with Keely. As Isabelle goes off to college and experiences things without Keely, their friendship falls apart a little. Instead of supporting one another, they find themselves competing. While I felt for Isabelle a few times in the novel, overall, she wasn't my favorite character as she just seemed so self-absorbed. As the years go by, she does get a lot better though as she learns and grows.
The setting of Nantucket was very well done and it's the perfect location for a beach read. Thayer's descriptions of Nantucket during the off season as well as during summertime are very well done; readers can truly get a grasp on what life is life for locals on an island.
I liked that Thayer's Surfside Sisters was a light beach read that was ultimately a coming-of-age tale, but it also touched on bigger issues, such as, jealousy, friendship throughout the years, aging parents, forgiveness and so much more. I have to say this is my favorite of Thayer's that I've read yet. Are you a fan of Nancy Thayer's beach reads? Let me know in the comments.
This was a fun summer read. I couldn’t put it down. I liked how it really showed the girls friendship since they were kids. I felt the ending was a little rushed. But I enjoyed it.
It's not a complete summer without a Nancy Thayer book to read at the beach or back deck. She doesn't disappoint with Keely returning to Nantucket to help her mother. Keely's personal life is in flex with a boyfriend who is pushing to get married and her publisher rejecting her current novel. As the summer progresses she begins to repair her relationship with her high school best friend and find out that New York isn't the only place that is exciting. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
What a great summer read! I found myself drawn to the life of Keely and rooting for both her and Isabelle. I found myself dying to go to Nantucket and living vicariously through their lives. I could barely put the book down and it had one of the most satisfying endings of a book I have ever read!
I received this electronic ARC from Net Galley
I am a librarian and also on the lookout for good books for our patrons. Beach reads are always popular with our readers and this falls in that category. Not heavy! Just right for summer.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book! It was a great story and I really enjoyed reading it The book was very well written and the characters were easy to follow along with. I highly recommend this book and hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did!
What a perfect summer read! I loved Keely--I saw so much of myself in her and related to her life in so many places in this book. I loved the story of friendship, family, romance--all tied together with her dream of writing novels for a living. This book was hard to put down and would be a perfect weekend read at the beach or on vacation. It read fast and was an easy read, but still had depth, great characters, and an entertaining story.
Surfside Sisters follows Keely and Isabelle, best friends growing up on the island of Nantucket, uniquely connected by their shared love of writing. Told from Keely’s POV, the story starts when they’re children and works its way through their adolescence and into adulthood. Their relationship is deeply complicated. They understand each other in ways that no one else ever has or will, but they’re deeply competitive with one another. Keely is envious of Isabelle’s wealth and seemingly easy life. Isabelle is in turn deeply resentful of Keely’s success with writing. They have been as close as sisters since they were kids, but a betrayal ends up forcing the two apart. Can their competitiveness and mistakes of the past bring them back together again? review: Nancy Thayer is another author I look forward to releasing a new book in the summer. Thayer's signature writing and charm allows this story to be told beautifully. I really enjoyed this one, although I found myself frustrated at Keely and Isabelle separately numerous times! Their friendship was relatable and delicate, but I would have loved to hear a perspective from Isabelle as well. It's a great story of friendship, love, betrayal, and strength. This is a great book to pick up for a beach or pool day! rating: 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️
Perfect summer read! This was an easy ready because it was so good I couldn’t put it down! How often do we grow up with one really close best friend and then part ways, only to find each other later on in life. This was a sweet summertime story!
Not usually my type of book but the timing was right! I enjoyed this one more than I thought but the writing was good and the story pulled me in.
This book transported this land-locked girl straight to the beach. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I always look forward to summer because I know Thayer will deliver the perfect beach read!
I always like to check out an author's reviews on Goodreads and Amazon before requesting a title and was extremely excited to be approved for this title by NetGalley and Random House.
Although I enjoyed the book it did not meet my expectations. The beautiful friendship Keely and Isabelle had as children became petty and childish in high school. Isabelle became a self-centered brat and Keely should have written her off. Everything worked out in the end, and there were very touching scenes throughout the story that made the book more than worth my while to read. I also discovered I own one of the author's books in my e-book library and look forward to reading it. Overall, I still highly recommend Nancy Thayer. Her talent shined throughout the pages and I'm sure her other books show her gift much better.
Keely and Isabelle have been friends forever. I enjoyed reading about their younger years and how much they enjoyed each others company and had similar ambitions. The story was interesting and watching the changes the girls had was what I expected of this book. The writing style was easy to read as well. Some characters were likeable, others not so much and also it depended on each persons perspective. People change or their perspective's change and grow as they mature. However, there was so much angst, jealousy, and childishness as the two girls matured into women that I hated to read some of the chapters. At times, it felt like a contest between them, each wanting what the other had and not appreciating the blessings in their own lives. I also didn't care that the characters fell into bed with boyfriends so easily.
That said, the story is a nice escape and the location sounds beautiful. Just not my cup of tea.
Surfside Sisters is a great beach read. If you are not at the beach, you will feel like you are in Nantucket from the descriptions. The story is engaging, and I found myself avoiding house cleaning to read more. I never miss a Nancy Thayer book, and anxiously await the next one. Thank you netgalley for the gift of the arc, the review is my personal opinion.
