This book was recommended to me by my TwitterBestie, Estelle aka Publicist extraordinare from Forever Romance. This book is part of a duet, with a HEA and cliffhanger. (see above note about spoilers, you know where to find me).
This book is angsty AF. But it is appropriate. Lucy and Will meet in foster care as tweens. Sam becomes Lucy’s protector and naturally they fall in love. Their love is destroyed when Sam is sent to prison on drug charges. Flash forward 7ish years and they reconnect. Lucy is now working to establish an art gallery. Sam is a famous boxer. At one point I almost messaged Estelle with an eye roll emoji, but I actually enjoyed this book a lot. The flashbacks of childhood Lucy and Sam were near perfect for me.
In current day, Lucy is engaged to another man. But remember that life and love is messy and I like seeing that reflected in my romance novels. It’s never really in question who Lucy is going to pick. She may have thought so, but as the reader I never doubted it.
Some bigger quibbles- there are a few “not like other girl” descriptors happening in this book and I hate them. It didn’t make me stop reading though. But I saw them and I am calling them out. Also, Lucy was so dependent on these men. Her fiance owns the gallery and Sam offers to buy it when they reconnect. Sam and Drew get in to some verbal altercations and I wish that Lucy had stood up for herself more. But the actions that Lucy took and didn’t take seemed pretty authentic to her character. I was definitely invested in their love story and will be reading the next book.
Grade: C
Well written second chance romance from Robin Huber. There's a good chance you will read it all in one sitting! The first in the series---readers will be wanting more! Filled with love and turmoil--Huber does a fantastic job of flashing back to enlighten the reader on the characters' pasts and what leads them to their current situations. Well done!
Wow, this was SO GOOD!!! Robin Huber's writing pulled me in from the start and everything from the storyline to the characters held me captive on these pages. This story is exactly the brand of angsty heartache I enjoy reading. The second chance romance, the push and pull of a love triangle, the drama and angst courtesy of some infuriating side characters... it alI culminates into a wholly addictive storyline that I just loved. I need the sequel NOWWWWWW! I loved Sam so hard and I absolutely adored the history between him and Lucy. This book came out of nowhere and completely swept me away and now I can not wait for more.
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
What an incredible debut from Robin Huber! This book came recommended to me by a friend who had read it in one sitting and I was anxious to dive into it!
Lucy and Sam met when they were teenagers when they were placed in the same foster home in Brighton Park. They were one another's family. Sam looked out for Lucy and Lucy helped Sam do his best in the classroom. When an incident occurs that separates the two of them, it is devastating for both of them. Fast-forward ten years and now Lucy is engaged and is running her own art gallery, whereas Sam is now a professional boxer who has made quite the name for himself.
When Lucy attends one of Sam's fights and he realizes that she was there, he does everything he can to find her. When he finally does, he makes a surprise appearance at her art gallery. The idea is to get closure, but as we all know, best laid plans...
I enjoyed how the author wove parts and pieces of Sam and Lucy's past in, giving us the opportunity to get to know them better and to understand their bond and how strong it was from the very beginning. We also got real insight into the struggle that Lucy is having balancing what is happening with Sam and what is going on with her fiance. It felt real and raw.
It goes without saying that I am already ready for the next book in this series!
A truly delightful and sweet novel. Just the right cup of tea that I needed this weekend. I read it all in one night and I am so glad that I got to enjoy it. Sam and Lucy show so much strength as a fighting couple that have a second at true love. That honest, and are romance that gets you emotional wanting more. Tears were shed, happy laughter was expressed and I am beyond glad that I did not miss out on this one.
I am looking forward for part two because that ending was absolutely fantastic and has me tearing my hair out as well ;)
Lucy and Sam were raised in foster care. At one time, they were in the same foster care. Sam watched out for Lucy and as teenagers, they were in love. Sam was wrongly accused of a crime and they lost touch. Now Lucy is a successful artist with her one art gallery and is engaged to a wealthy man. Sam is a professional boxer.
Lucy goes to one of Sam's boxing matches and he sees her and tracks her down so they can have closure, only he realizes that he is still in love with her and she starts to wonder if her fiance is the right man for her or if Sam is.
I had a lot of expectations for this one, but I found it fell flat for me. I did care about the characters and thought the plot was interesting and wanted to know if Sam and Lucy would make it in the end. I found the foster care aspect compelling, but Lucy owning an art gallery felt cliched and unrealistic for someone who grew up in foster care to me. I felt the writing could have been more polished and the love scenes more provocative.
Sam and Lucy grew up together in Brighton Park in Atlanta where they shared, for a time, the same foster home. Sam always looked out for Lucy and Lucy encouraged Sam in school. Circumstances pushed them apart. Ten years have passed. Lucy has a stable future with her fiance and her own art gallery. Sam is a successful professional boxer. Sam sees Lucy at one of her fights and tracks her down at her art gallery to "find closure" and let her go.
"And I'm still the boy who fell in love with that girl. The boy who promised to always protect her. The boy who lived and breathed for her happiness." He creases his eyebrows and runs his hands through his hair. "I came here to tell you goodbye, Lucy. To tell you that you were wrong. To finally let you go." My heart weeps in a dark corner inside my chest. "But you see, the problem with that is, I don't know how". *swoon*
Huber does a fantastic job weaving in stories from Sam and Lucy's past that highlight how strong their love and bond was to give you insight into her characters. Huber doesn't shy away from the internal angst Lucy faces when deciding her future - stay with her 'safe' fiance or take a risk on Sam. Great dialog and discussion of how choices, no matter their "rightness" can end up hurting others and how a person has to ask and understand how much pain they're willing to cause to be true to themselves.
Will definitely read more in this series.
Robin Huber has really wow’ed me with her debut novel A Love Like Yours!
Lucy and Sam met as tweens when they were placed in the same foster home. Both coming from heartbreaking backgrounds, the two form a strong bond. As they got older that friendship turned into a romantic connection they thought would be unbreakable....until it wasn’t.
Now, 10 years later, a life of having to fight to defend himself has paid off for Sam because he’s an famous professional boxer. Lucy is on the brink of really making it big in the art world as a painter and also engaged to be married!!! Lucy is given tickets to Sam’s match at Madison Square Garden and after some initial hesitation, she decides to go! Lucy obviously knows she will be seeing Sam, but really hopes he doesn’t see her...but he does!!!! It was at that point I knew I was 100% on the hook!
I loved the premise of this novel, I loved the writing style of Robin Huber, and I loved the endearing cast of characters! The storyline time hops from the past to present which I felt worked perfectly to get the full scope of both Lucy and Sam. This 4.5 star novel is the first installment in a 2 novel duet, but have no fear the second novel is due out on 6/18/19! I am so happy it’s not too long until I can get my hands on the conclusion to addictive story!
