I love anything by Charlaine Harris!!
Once, I started this book I could not put it down. As always, the author leaves me wanting more!
Charlaine Harris wrote the Sookie Stackhouse books, that became True Blood. I read them all, and I loved them, so I just presumed this would be some form of urban fantasy. I was completely and pleasantly wrong. This book is a series of four linked short stories, all centering around the same main character. The stories are clever and quietly hilarious, the characters are calculating and clever and fantastic. The only downside is because it's just four short stories, it was over far too soon.
Thanks to NetGalley and JABberwocky Press for this ARC.
This is a collection of four short stories featuring Anne DeWitt, the former head of an extreme "survivalist" school who, after being disgraced and permanently relocated, is now the Principal of a small town high school. While she has adopted a new persona, Anne still retains her attention to detail, her ruthlessness, and her desire to see her students succeed by any means necessary.
Anne is a less sympathetic protagonist then Harris's other leading ladies, while still being entertaining to follow. She's honestly a bit of a sociopath, caring far more about the overall success of her school then the welfare of individuals. The four stories contained here are quick and compelling, and the short story format lends itself well to someone like Anne--it is easier to take her point of view in small doses then I imagine it would be in a full novel. I enjoyed reading these stories and wouldn't mind reading others set in this universe.
I love all of Charlaine Harris’s books and this one was great too! I just wish it was longer. It contains 4 short stories about Anne DeWitt/ Twyla Burnside, a principal at a school who used to be someone else a lot different. I really hope there are more novels about this character!
(Will post to Goodreads/ Amazon once the book is released.)
In “ Small Kingdoms” Charlaine Harris introduces a new character in a series of four short stories.
Anne DeWitt ( formerly Twyla Burnside) is principal at Travis High School, an identity created for her after problems arise in her previous job teaching an intensive survival course .
She has come to love her job and is determined that her school will excel academically and sports teams. She and Coach Holt who was also placed in his current identity keep an eye on potential problems and solve them in unorthodox ways. A very quick and easy read and I look forward to more from Anne Dewitt and Coach Holt. Thank you to #netgalley #jabberwockyliteraryagency for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Four short stories about Anne Dewitt, a principal with a most unusual past. Each short story has a blurb from the author about her inspiration.
I mist enjoyed the first two stories, but overall all were good. I am a big fan of Charmaine Hariss and Rhett rich worlds she creates, with very well drawn out characters. I was immediately drawn into Anne and wanted to know more. Hiding a past with many secrets that make her a frequent target for assassins, she still also has to keep her day job which she takes very, very seriously.
Very fun, well mapped out and interesting, I don’t know if there will be more of Anne Dewitt, but if there is I will be reading!
