Croquette and Empanada is a graphic novel inspired from the real life relationship of the author and her boyfriend.
Both Croquette and Empanada were drawn beautifully and I loved the artist's style, but i feel that she failed to provide a great story. This graphic novel is a compilation of cute and funny story from their relationship, but the humor was a hit or miss. There are nothing much plot wise, a few cute and relatable situations here and there.
Unfortunately, I feel like Croquette and Empanada's stories are too similar to other visible comics on social media. I wish there was more uniqueness and funny stories to tell.
Best of luck to the artist for her future works.
I'd love to be able to give a great review for this title but no matter I do I can't open the file to read it. It wants to send it to Overdrive but then Overdrive tells me it can't read the file. Looked like a cute story but maybe figure out a better way to let readers read it.
Either the book was poorly translated or I am not the reader for this book, because I found most of the "humor" to be not so humorous. I loved the idea and the synopsis, but something about the book just didn't work for me and I'm not sure the teens in my library will enjoy it either, so I will not be purchasing it unless specifically requested.
Cute, quick read about Empanada & Croquette, the graphic novel is full of cute little stories about their relationship, I especially liked the scary bedtime stories. I have to admit since I don't have the experience of living with a significant other i couldn't completely relate but I still found the stories cute and I love the art of Ana Oncina.
I would like to thank the publisher for giving me a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this!
Croquette & Empanada is an adorably-illustrated graphic novel on living together with the one you love and making decisions that could affect both people involved.
The illustrations were charming, but I don't think they make up for the dullness of the plot.
The story was just too plain because it was too relatable. Maybe the couple could've had food problems. What was it like interacting with humans if you were a food? Was it difficult to deal with them? Did the food ever get stabbed and eaten by their human neighbors? Was there any weird food tradition when it comes to living together? The story needed something more weird and unique.
The concept of the empanada and croquette couple living like humans wasn't really that appealing. I really don't see the point to it. The story would very much be the same if they were humans.
Overall, this book could work as a light and quick read. It could've been better.
The story is so cutie patotie. I couldn't help but crave for more. The illustration is eye catching and inviting.
It was a very cute and interesting graphic novel. I love the illustrations and the comics throughout are entertaining.
This was such an enjoyable and cute graphic novel about the adventures of the of Croquette & Empanada. Through illustrations, we see the relatable mishaps or cute moments a couple might encounter throughout their relationship. Croquette & Empanada is a fast read that will make you pass a good time and smile more than once.
Croquette & Empanada, the snack-food alter-egos of the author and her partner, are adorable. The comic vignettes depict a snapshot of their relationship in a cute and heartwarming way. There are elements in a couple of the stories that may not be universal and may cause some confusion, but otherwise the characters are portrayed in relatable scenarios. Overall, a kawaii look at couple life.
So Lovely!!!!!
I love this couple!!! The short stories told in the book are so similar to any relationship in the real life that it's impossible not to compare to your own couple relation
Thank you Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the review copy.
I like the colour palette used to show the story , in not much colours but still calm and beautiful!!
This is a story of two people from the starting of their relationship , how it did and all the way to making it !! Being real , friendly to each other and being cute !! Both of them.
The story of ordinary people but not so people, Ahh u gotta read it to find. It's really cute , funny story that will make you laugh many times!!!! Be ready for having small laughing every now and then.
Keeping up with each other and teasing is so fun to read in this sweet tale of relationship.
Had a fun time, light hearted and cozy. One of the cutest couple ever.
Aside from the gimmick of the main characters being a croquette and an empanada, this is a fairly boring comic collection that relies on stereotypes, some bordering on the offensive. When Croquette basically fat-shames Empanada near the end of the book, I'd had enough. (Luckily, I was almost done.)
If you like books about gender stereotypes, crazy cat ladies, and the mundane, you might enjoy this. I did not.
Croquette & Empanada is a collection of short stories based on the romantic relationship of the author. The art style is very simple and expressive. Most of the stories felt they weren't connected with each other, but clearly, this book follows a timeline. Towards the end, that became obvious with the appearance of new characters that were introduced. Even though the stories are really short, they express a lot of Croquette and Empanada's personalities over several situations while causing a few laughs along the way.
Long time readers of Graphic Novel Weekly will likely have recognized that I like to feature cartoons here when I can, because they feel like a very tight bond with other comic styles. I grew up reading Calvin & Hobbes, and I’ve featured a number of webcomic here at Graphic Novel Weekly. I was excited to take another crack at a title that seems to blend comics and cartoons, with Croquette & Empanada.
Croquette and Empanada have just moved in together and are beginning to explore what this stage of their relationship looks like. From parties to sharing the blanket, the pair grow in their relationship.
There isn’t a whole lot here in this volume. It’s intended to be cute and funny, but it mostly feels light and airy, without much depth. I had hoped for more from this, a fun, easy read, but instead it was a very quick read that left me feeling unfulfilled. I would love to see a little more depth and complexity out of this title.
This isn’t a bad title to grab for a quick read between books, but it isn’t strong enough to stand on its own.

They are a cute couple but overall I just wasn’t a super big fan of the book. I can’t really explain why...there was nothing particularly wrong with it. The illustrations were great, which is sort of key in a “graphic” novel, so it gets 4 stars in my book. Just because something isn’t my taste doesn’t mean it doesn’t hit all the targets it should or that it’s not quality. Just more suited for someone else.
A comic about boyfriend and girlfriend pastries, Croquette & Empanada, and their daily relationship as they live together, get pets, go on vacation, etc.
This seems aimed at the new adult/adult crowd who will get the humor in the relationship situations brought up. It’s not laugh out loud funny, but several of the strips were entertaining. I don’t think I’ll buy this for our library since middle graders and teens aren’t the target audience and likely won’t get most of the humor.
Notes on content: One mild swear word. The boyfriend and girlfriend live together and are depicted in bed together frequently, but nothing more than a kiss. One comic in which a character drinks so much she forgets parts of the evening the next day.
I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I didn’t dislike this book, but it didn’t really grab me like a lot of other comic style books have.
It’s cute, and easy to follow, but I don’t think I would actively suggest it to other people.
Croquette and Empanada is a graphic novel about two people in a relationship. They’re represented as an Empanada and Croquette who completely fit in a world of humans, with a few other food characters sprinkled in. It’s broken down into a bunch of short comics that explore everything from the hardships of sharing a bed (stolen covers, pushing the other person off the bed, etc.) to going on a trip abroad. As with most graphic novels of this style, it’s a very fast read, easily sped through in around an hour or less.
I found the story to be very adorable, and I think that people in a relationship would really enjoy reading this together, as many parts are very relatable. I just got out of a year-long relationship, and while reading I frequently wanted to show relatable parts of it to him. 😦 Nevertheless, I kept finding myself with a smile on my face, because I could relate so much with the cute, whimsical Empanada.
The art style is very easy to look at with calm, muted colors and simple scenes that aren’t cluttered. The characters are very cute and you can read the emotion on their faces in every panel, which adds to the story. Their expressions are almost comical at times.
All in all, I enjoyed reading Croquette and Empanada. I’ll give it 4/5 stars because while I found it to be very amusing and adorable, I’m not sure if it will stick with me. The majority of the comics reminded me of the type of content you quickly read on a social media site, share with a friend, and then move on with your day. That’s how reading this felt. I felt warm and fuzzy while reading it, but I’m not sure how much I’ll remember in a day or so.
*Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with an e-arc of this book!*
This is an adorable little comic book about Croquette and Empanada, a couple just going though life and having adventures. I really liked that there were a bunch of different stories in this collection but that they still had an overarching story line that they kept to. Some of the stories were just a page long and then some were up to a few pages long. I liked the variety of the lengths of all the different stories. I also really liked the artwork and the color palette in this graphic novel. I would recommend to pretty much anyone. The stories could be enjoyed by any age group with no problems I think.
