A solid mystery that grabs you right from the start.
I liked the feeling of unease the idea of Siggy was. The idea of not being sure of your own self and what you are possibly capable of. I didn't love the detective story but I did feel like it derailed the mystery at times and I wasn't always into the drama there. Solid conclusion, I enjoyed this one!
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
Not a bad debut, it's an interesting premise and a decent thriller, although the pace is perhaps a little too slow.
3.9 stars!
“You want to know fear?
Fear has a name.
Her name is Siggy.”
This is the story of Ellie (Eleanor), who is 19 years old and has to be locked in her room every night... Or else, her alter, Siggy, takes over and will come out to play.
The book starts with Ellie's boyfriend - Matt- dissappearence, the night before.
Ellie wakes up hurt and quickly discoveres that Siggy somehow took over last night and broke through the bedroom door... And went out.
Is Matt dead? Is that why he isn't picking up his cell phone or is found anywhere?
Or did Matt just leave?!
When every evidence leads to it, did Siggy really hurt him?!
Read the book to find out ;)

Sadly, I didn't love this... hence the rating.
This was a bit predictable at times, but it did caught me by surprise at least 2 times... So I guess it was pretty good.
So, there's a few twists we don't see coming.
Unfortunately, there's barely any Romance.
Then, there's the difficult and complex relationship between mother and daughter, when one is dependent on the other.
I liked the side characters here, especially the American-Korean Detective, Ben, and his colleague, Kit.
By the end of the book, all questions and mysteries are solved, so I guess that's good.
Books about DID often make me worried. It tends to be sensationalized and problematic. Shockingly, it was handled with care. However, the balance of "psychological thriller" and "police procedural" was off, with each distracting from the main drive of the other. The procedural portions are meticulous and felt realistic, but I didn't care for the sheer amount of personal drama DS Mae brings into the story. As for Elle, each time something interesting happens, we were immediately thrown into Mae's perspective again. And the foreshadowing was a little too heavy-handed, making the ending not surprising in the slightest.
A great mystery book! I really like books that have you guessing everything and every little thing that happens! Worth reading!
Ellie suffers from a sleep disorder. She can become unpredictable and violent, so she needs to be locked in her bedroom at night. One morning, she awakens to discover her bedroom door smashed, injuries on her body, and no memory of what happened during the night. Then she learns her boyfriend is missing. As Ellie questions what happened, she delves into her past to learn more about her condition.
This book is brilliant. Kept me hooked throughout. Thank you so much to Kate Simants and for the ARC.
A truly fantastic read, which I couldn't put down. So gripping and brilliant twists at the end. I'm new to the author but will definitely be looking out for more!
A really good debut novel with lots of twists and red herrings . The characters are nicely fleshed out and the pace, plot and tension created had me engrossed.
Looking forward to reading more from this talented author!
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read - this is my honest opinion of the book.
I had trouble at first with this book as I couldn't connect to the story but after about 1/4 way through I did get into it. Good story, good characters and definitely recommend.
Lock me in by Kate Simants kept me interested and captivated within the book, i had a few nail biting moments and times i had to take a tea break as i was very engrossed in it that i hadn't realised how fast time flied by. It is a very psychological thrillers that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. The plot and storyline is very interesting.
I have also read the book as well as listened to the audiobook, each time i was just the same intrigued by it and very much enjoyed, Great dialogue and character development was written perfectly. Overall it is a slow but fast paced book that will keep you interested from beginning to end. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers then this book is definitely for you.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to fellow book readers, family and friends.
Well THAT was a crazy ride!!!
Ellie is happy and loving. Siggy is hateful and bad, or is she?
By day Ellie Powers is just your average young woman except for her secrets. At night her bedroom door is tightly locked by her mother and Ellie believes that she is a danger to herself and others if it isn't done in time.
One morning she wakes to find her boyfriend is missing and her bedroom door forcefully broken open. Did Siggy get out and do something Ellie will be blamed for?
The writing in this was strong. The character are quite likable and I found myself very sympathetic to Ellie's plight and Detective Mae's personal life.
However, the author gave too much detail to Ellie's overbearing mother and at 16% in I was convinced there was something hinky about her. By 25% I was sure of my theory which in my opinion is way too early to be solving the heart of the book. There are plenty of small reveals that keep the book interesting but you won't have a problem solving the main one.
I recommend this book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this title.
Lock me in is the authors debut novel. Which I am sure fans of psychological thrillers will love.
I listened to this on audio and I have to admit that the narrators voice did not cut it for me.
The story is good but I felt like an old lady was telling me her story. Kind of like in the movie Titanic. Which is a shame because this book has so much going for it. But unfortunately the audio version wasn't for me.
I was captivated by this book! Engaging from beginning to end with great dialogue and character development.
I love reading debuts because I have no expectations and the sky is the limit. This was a tense psychological thriller that read like Kate Simants has been doing this for years. It was emotional and unpredictable and you were constantly kept on your toes. The only thing that hindered this novel in anyway was the multiple points of view because it hindered the momentum of the story. Other than that, Simants had a lot of twists and turns that Ll tied up neatly at the end. Highly recommended for fans of the thriller genre.
I very much enjoyed this book. It has a good story and excellent main characters. I would definately recommend this book.
Lock Me In is an exciting psychological thriller. The book at its heart is a psychological thriller with elements of mystery.
Ellie Power has a normal life. She has a stable home, a loving boyfriend, and a bright future. But at night, she suffers from a sleep disorder. She becomes angry, unpredictable, and violent. Her mother locks her in her bedroom every night, to keep them both safe. Then one morning, Ellie wakes up, horrified to find the lock on her bedroom door smashed from the inside. She is covered in injuries, unable to remember anything about the night before. And her boyfriend Matt is nowhere to be found. Will Ellie able to remember what really happened that night?
The premise of this novel is unique (though it explores personality disorders, already explored in many books before). The story is narrated in alternating points of view - of Ellie (who is suffering from DID-Dissociative Identity Disorder) and DS Mae (the detective dealing with the case of Ellie's missing boyfriend, Matt. The plot is unpredictable and despite several twists and turns, the book manages to give a detailed explanation and tie all the loose ends in the end.
Having said that, Lock Me In was severely hindered by Mae’s POV and several characters, hampering the flow of the main plot. As soon as Ellie’s story gathers momentum, the story keeps switching to Mae’s personal story and his family troubles (not connected to the main story) which was quite frustrating. Also, I could guess the main mystery quite early. Though it had several surprising twists, the book felt unduly long in the end. The characters, apart from Ellie, were not very interesting, and as a result, I enjoyed Ellie’s chapters more. The main mystery could have been got more focus.
Overall, Lock Me In is a nice slow-burning thriller. If you love slow-burning psychological thrillers, you will enjoy this book more. 3.5 stars out of 5
Many thanks to the publishers' Harper Impulse and Killer Reads and Netgalley for the ARC.
I almost gave up in the first 20% of the book because I had trouble connecting to the story. It was the good reviews on Goodreads that kept me going though. The book ended up being really good and I couldn't stop reading!
This was a tense book with great twists . It has short chapters and is told by 2 different characters. This book had a dose of mental illness which is a subject I am passionate about. Great twists that I didnt see coming. There is a bit of a time travel theme in it. It was refreshing to read a story with a new plot.. that we havent read about in a while.
This is one intense, twisted, dark and addictive novel! Not only is this a very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters, but the suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Compulsive, gripping and horrifying! Will keep you on the edge of your seat!
