Funny book with lots of descriptive language (and puns)! Middle schoolers who are fans of poultry and superheroes will appreciate this book.
I received an electronic ARC from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group through NetGalley.
Second book in the series about Thundercluck.
Thundercluck and Brunhilde return home to Asgard and are summoned by Odin to discuss an overdue library book. Apparently, there are severe consequences when readers don't return their books. Odin forbid Brunhilde from using her magic and sent them on a mission to find the book before the final due date. The penalty for not returning a book is permanent banishment from Asgard. The two set out to locate the book. Along the journey, they encounter evildoers who also want the book and the access to the Book Wyrms. The adventure ends well with Brunhilde meeting her mother and Thundercluck saving the world again.
Tillery presents an action packed story for middle grade readers. My concerns are the pace and how much is packed in. The font density is difficult to read but I hope that's simply the way the ARC was shared.
The humor is subtle and doesn't always work. Hopefully it will for the intended audience. Thundercluck is an interesting and absurd main character. If readers don't know his background, they may not understand how he came to be a hero.
The message of admitting you're wrong and apologizing is clear and comes through at the end.
Thundercluck! Chicken of Thor is the hilarious new adventure starring a mythological chicken with lightning powers and his Valkyrie best friend. This is sure to fly off the shelves. With jokes and laughter this is a fun romp through the mythological nine realms. It is exciting and adventurous, perfect for the reluctant readers.
