This book has a very strong main character Katie Scott, she is very likable, and I found myself really routing for her. The book kept me gripped until the end as I didn't guess who the killer was, although I was a little disappointed with the ending. I would definitely read the next book
Firstly thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced copy. This is my first ever Jennifer Chase book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting and could not put it down. A real page turner. I really enjoyed her writing and the scenery just came to live. Really loved the character of Katie and the scenes with her and Cisco were great. A totally enjoyable read and I would have no hesitation in recommending this book. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Interesting and intriguing story with a good cast of characters and a fast moving plot. Looking forward to the next one.
Katie Scott, former soldier and police officer, has left the military and returned home to Pine Valley. Her uncle, Wayne Scott, the sheriff of Pine Valley has offered her a job at the department until she decides what she wants to do. While overseas, Katie worked with K9 Cisco, uncovering explosives and her uncle has “pulled strings” to reunite her with Cisco. A young girl has been missing for several years and while filing cold cases, Katie sees areas in the paperwork that she feels could be reexamined. With Cisco’s help, she continues to search areas where the girl was last seen. When she accidentally slips down a steep-slope she is near what looks like a tunnel. What she discovers will blow the case wide open…she has found a hidden cemetery. After her discovery, her uncle swears her in as a detective and assigns her to assist with what is now a homicide investigation. An amazing beginning to a new series by Ms. Chase. I look forward to more stories about this strong, capable woman who through her military and police training relied on dedicated police work as well as gut feelings to solve the case. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
I really wanted to like this book. Based on the synopsis, it's exactly the type of story I really enjoy. With that being said, I really didn't enjoy it. It was difficult to get into - the writing was choppy and disjointed, the characters bland. I tried ... really tried ... Unfortunately, this is one series I won't be reading.
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture for the eARC.
This is the first book in a new series and I want more. Katie is a complex, developing character that draws the reader in. The case in this one is full of twists and I didn't see the villain coming. The relationships between Katie, her uncle, and coworkers are interesting and add a lot to the story. I'm very interested in seeing where things go.
Katie Scott is returning home after serving in Afghanistan, following the death of her family. Unsure if she will return to her job as a patrol officer, she takes a clerical position within the Pine Valley Sheriff's office and quickly finds herself investigating the disappearance of a young year years earlier. Katie’s involvement with the investigation outs her in the crosshairs of the lead investigator and a killer.
This is the first book in what will become a series from Jennifer Chase. Overall I enjoyed the book but it was a very slow read because I had difficulties getting invested in the characters. Katie is a strong intelligent woman but the character leads a very solitary life and I would have enjoyed the perspective of other characters in the story. I will read the next book in the series to see if the pacing picks up.
To be honest I struggled with this book and couldn't really get into it. I didn't like the characters and it just wasn't for me.
I don't think I will be bothering with this new series personally.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Little Girls Sleeping........I found that this book had potential for a good storyline however I found the writing style to be choppy.
The characters lacked personality and they were very one dimensional.
Some of the subplots lacked energy and were boring.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read the ARC of this book. Sadly this book wasn’t for me.
Truck comes to stop at cliff overlooking forest.he walks into forest to dig a grave.katie is coming home after many patrols at the last two years as part of k9 team.Katie took leave of absence from police department to work military k9 team. Katie is met at airport by uncle Wayne. I really liked Katie but was creeped out by events
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookoture and Jennifer Chase for the chance to read this novel in exchange for an honest review.
The book opens with an unknown man who is creating his masterpiece: a grave. We then jump to four years later when Katie Scott is flying back home after two years in the army in Afghanistan working with the K9 unit finding explosives. Unsure what career path to take now she’s home Katie takes a temporary position at the Sheriff's Office. One day she happens upon the cold case of missing eight-year-old Chelsea Compton. Reminded by the disappearance and murder of her childhood friend, Jenny, and feeling the crime was improperly investigated, she begins her own search for the girl.
When Katie locates not just Chelsea’s grave, but a row of graves in a remote area, the case becomes more than anyone had first thought. When another girl goes missing Katie vows to find the killer before it’s too late.
This was an easy read but it felt predictable. The elements for a great thriller were all there but that magic element was elusive. Katie was a whiny character that I just couldn’t take too. Though she was lavished with praise in the novel her discoveries were written as accidents instead of the result of her investigative techniques so I failed to agree with the consensus that she was a skilled detective. Only surface details were given for all the characters with Katie’s ptsd not even managing to provide depth for her character and becoming repetitive.
On a positive note, the crime scenes were chilling and the killer began as someone eerie and sinister. His twisted ideology made him a killer I was excited to read but again I felt like his character was underdeveloped and there was no real climax, just disappointment at the way it concluded. It felt like the author tried to do too much so the story and characters were rushed in exchange for packing a lot in. Crime fiction is a saturated market and sadly this one just didn’t stand out among the quality that is out there.
I don't want to ruin this book for everyone who still has to read it, but believe me when I say that you are in for a thrilling read!
The story is really well written and I could not put it away. Can highly recommend!
While the ideas behind this book were very good and had a lot of promise, the execution fell short for me. It was more of a struggle to read this than enjoyable and in the end i had to give up. There was no development with the characters and no depth to the story.
I was very impressed with new series by Jennifer Chase. I have been reading her books for awhile now, and I can say, I am never disappointed! It was addicting, captivating and had me reading into the night.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy!

I must admit it took a good few chapters to really get going and grip me as a reader but once it did its claws were well and truly in!
Katie Scott is a formidable character with a real gritty backstory that I hope comes through more as her book series progresses.
Her relationships with her family, friends and work colleagues are all extremely well written and seamlessly come together to give you the full picture of her character.
A chilling read with plenty of twists the whole way through!
Cannot wait for the second book.
This book was not for me. It was disappointing and I struggled to finish it. Maybe it was me but I didn't like the writing or the characters.
Unfortunately this book just wasn’t for me. It started out well, but I soon found Katie to be irritating and not overly likeable. A lot of time was spent going over details that had already been provided instead of any real character development, so I found that I wasn’t really interested in any of the characters. Throughout I had many questions and wondered why there was no follow through on most of the plot lines - it was almost as though the author was just trying to get us to the end as soon as possible so didn’t try to flesh anything out except to go on about poor Katie and all the near-misses she kept having *eyeroll* I found that Katie didn’t seem to have any real revelations, she just kept stumbling across things. Although I found it easy to read I must admit as soon as I knew who was responsible I thought about calling it a day.
Thanks Netgalley.
This read was a struggle for me. Jennifer Chase has very solid ideas for what could be an exciting novel. I was hooked reading the synopsis. However, the execution is seriously lacking. The entire novel felt superficial and disjointed. Character development was non-existent and what we were told about the characters was only surface details. Relationships between the characters were lacking chemistry, and each character was formulaic, which isn't necessarily an issue so long as you use a different formula for each character. Scenes were not linked together well and were often mired in unnecessary and repetitive detail and dialogue.
There is a lot going on in this story and most of it works quite well. The main character, Katie Scott, an ex-cop, ex-soldier, is not as strong as she would like everyone to think but having recently returned from two tours in Afghanistan she is living in her late parents home while she tries to work out what to do next. Offered a job by her Uncle, who also happens to be the local sheriff, Katie hopes she can find her feet again in familiar surroundings.
There were plenty of twists and turns as Katie and her new colleagues try to find the killer of a young girl which had been downgraded to cold case status until startling new evidence comes to light. This brings her into contact with people from her past as well as new people at work and in her private life, all of whom permeate the case to a greater or lesser extent.
I enjoyed seeing things through Katie's eyes and also the descriptions of the area, new and old friends and the crime scenes. The details conveyed a moving picture it was easy to feel a part of and the final few chapters were original and satisfyingly taut.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who wants to begin a new series of books based around cold cases or enjoys multi-layered crime writing.
This was an enjoyable read. It held my interest and the story moved quickly. There's so many similar books out there on the market and I d8dnt feel like this stood out in any way
