I received a free e-copy of Good Girls by J.T. Ellison from NetGalley for my honest review.
This book takes place at an elite all girls boarding school. The girls that are accepted her are demanded excellence. Ash, a new girl, arrives and she along with other girls have lots of secrets.
A murder, rituals and secret societies entangle this story. Although there are plot twists, I struggled connecting with the characters and found certain aspects of the book to be very unbelievable.
I think the story had a good premise, I just felt as though it was lacking in certain areas.
I love school stories. No idea why but possibly because I hated school! Very well written. Drew me in straight away with a murdered student hanging in front of the school. This is a book you’ll love!
4/5 on goodreads
I am a sucker for a good boarding school thriller/mystery! This tale of teenage girls at a prestigious boarding school just for girls, The Goode School, is anything but good! These are some seriously privileged and mean girls.
After her parents' deaths, Ash is shipped off to The Good School. She has changed her name to avoid the publicity of the deaths and all she wants is to study and stay under the radar. Not going to happen. Someone always knows someone who can find out what you want to stay hidden.
The school is full of children of wealth and privilege whose parents are high profile people with little time for their own children, much better to send them to a snooty school that seems perfect on the outside but rotten on the inside. Including the Dean!
I am not sure there was one decent character in this book! Girls start to seriously hurt each other and then the deaths begin. Ash is sure she knows who is behind it, but will anyone believe her now? And is she even Ash??
And once secrets begin to spill out, everyone is left exposed.

Well....this book was really good. Had me hooked from start to finish with a well thought out storyline, a few great reveals and relatable fleshed out characters. Some of the reveals were predictable, however some were a delightful surprise. There was a small amount of confusion over who was who and whose story we were following towards the end, but I think that was more than likely my interpretation rather than an issue with the novel itself. I wouldn't say the story is the most original, but it was a very enjoyable read none the less.
If you are a fan of thrilling, well crafted and interesting novels, I highly recommend picking this up.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Not the usual I expect from JT and started off a bit slow, as well as a few slow parts. However the story still intertwined very well. Rich moody teenage girls in an all girl school, what could possibly go wrong? Drugs, secret societies, affairs, pregnancy and of course murder.
I received a copy of "Good Girls Lie" from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley! I am so glad to have gotten this book when I did. I was in a reading slump but when I started this one the slump ended! Even though I am 38 years old I always enjoy books set in a boarding school/college type environment. I think maybe some of the characters were a little over the top but Ive never been in that type of situation so maybe not? I did love the plot twist though. I didn't see it coming and I loved it!
It is a shame you can't give half stars here, but this book was 3 and a half stars for me.
The whole idea of this book is absolutely very interesting. Although you may think that it is a story like many others, it keeps surprising you along the way. I liked the way the book was narrated, it made for a interesting read. Some parts were very new and smart, while other parts were a bit predictable. The start of the book was a bit long for me to get through, it started out a little slow. But around half-way it became much more interesting to read.
In the end, it wasn't a book that kept me awake at night, but still it really was a very interesting story. I do think that with some little changes it could have been an amazing book. And I will absolutely keep my eye out for any other books by this author.
This book was incredible! I loved the setting, the characters...the storyline. It read easily and although it was confusing in some places I attribute that more to weird kindle formatting for the ARC. This book was excellent and I will be recommending it to all.
Generally, I love the books by JT Ellison. This time, however, after trying multiple times, I just had a horrible time getting into the story. I felt overwhelmed with too much dialogue. I'm sure it's all meant to set up the characters. There is too much insignificant information. This story was just not enough to hold my interest.
This book was gifted to me by NetGalley and the author in return for an honest review.
A fast paced, well plotted thriller! I have read a few books by Ellison and was excited when I heard about Good Girls Lie. It's probably not the most original story, but definitely engaging and a good read!
The book starts with a student found hanging on the gates of a private school. We then learn how this came to happen. Ash Carlisle is the new girl, a secretive Brit who doesn't quite fit in with the rich American girls. The school prides itself on its Honor Code to keep the girls in line but in this book money, power and secrets result in bullying and a handful of deaths. To what length will some of them go to keep their secrets?
There were some good twists and turns and the ending was unexpected and tied things up perfectly. I did find it to be a bit too descriptive and long but still an enjoyable read.
Thank you Netgalley and MIRA books for this ARC.
The author had me at the prologue hook, line and sinker.
There were a few twists and turns that i didn't see coming and I love being surprised in a book.
The wiring was flawless. Though some of the words were big money words that I had to look up.
I'm glad the author included the epilogue it added to the story. Can't wait to read more by this author. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC. This was a solid thriller!
From the summary, I thought this book sounded amazing and I had such high hopes for it. I always appreciate book that keeps me guessing and trying to figure out what is going to happen next. This book delivers!
Ash is one of those characters that you can't help to want to more more about. The bits and pieces of clues and background were dropped in at such a rate that you were engaged the entire time. The twist was something I had not expected and I loved every moment of it. This was my first book by J.T. Ellison, but definitely not the last.
Wow, J.T. Ellison has hit another one out of the park with this book! The story line had some really interesting twists and the characters were so over the top but really interesting. Not your usual rich girl, smart girl, leader of the pack etc. This book would be a good read for young adults, as well as adult fiction. If you've read and enjoyed Ellison's other books you will like this one!
The type of book you don't want to put down till the very end. Great story since I couldn't figure out whodunit till the very end.
Although the whole background of this story is utterly strange to me, I've really enjoyed it. With 'strange' I mean the all-girls boarding school (we don't have them) and the way those rich girls are treated (as if they are more important than others). Not to mention the way those girls treat each other.
It is hard to write a review without spoilers for this book. I can tell you, however, that I liked the pace, the background stories and the way the author gives all characters their own definition. Not all mean girls are equally mean and not all good girls are equally good. I felt sorry for the dean (aside from her ridiculous first name) because she really tried, but failed in reaching her goal with the school. Early in the story it is obvious that there is more than meets the eye, but it is not so obvious that you can see all surprises in the story too soon.
Thanks to Netgalley for this digital review copy.
I found this book took me longer to read than most because I felt as thought I was missing something so I kept going back and re-reading chapters. I eventually just sat and read the book without doing this and was sucked into these characters lives. Ash is a very dynamic character that has had a life unlike most teen girls and you will get this feeling right away. Goode is a school for girls who want to go to the best Ivy League schools and achieve the most out of life. There are a lot of things that happen at this school and the history behind the school is so unique. I don’t want to go into any detail because it will give away so much. This is a fabulous well written book and the characters are well written.
SO good! Full of surprises at every turn, even when I thought I had it figured out, this title kept me heavily engaged throughout! Really enjoyed the depth of characters and the ties of their relationships, and how it all played out in the story.
Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
J.T Ellison brings to us a slightly more grown up version of Pretty Little Liars. It's a quick mystery set in an all girls boarding school where a new student has arrived and questions begin to arise. Will all the secrets cloud the truth so much that a death never gets answers? Or will things begin to unravel and reveal the truth that nobody saw coming? This is a chilling and twisted tale of the boarding school of your nightmares, complete with the elitist school girl mentality you'll be glad you escaped.
Set in an idyllic location in Virginia, the Goode School is an exclusive prep school for the best and brightest female students, who are exclusively the daughters of the rich, famous, and influential. Ash Carr is new to the school. Brilliant, beautiful and haunted, Ash has left tragedy behind her in England. With both of her parents dead, Ash is firmly focused on the future, and on the distractions that only life at Goode can provide.
Ash is soon drawn in to the subterranean world of secret societies, and falls under the spell of Head Girl Becca - stunning, seductive, and cruel. But when one of the students is found dead in an apparent suicide, questions start to be asked. Are the societies responsible? Or is there something much deeper and darker at play?
I LOVED this book. I've read tons of novels dealing with sorority hazing and secret societies, and not one of them did it as beautifully as this. I love how there is a real sense of the sinister creeping in chapter by chapter as the author ratchets up the tension, and I also loved that the characters were so well-developed and multi-faceted. Becca, for example, could have been a black and white villain, but the author allows us insights into her character that show how she too, despite her cruelty to Ash, just wants to be accepted. I think a lot of the focus sometimes goes into the central protagonist and we don't see the intentions or true feelings of the other characters, but this book does a brilliant job of doing both. Genuinely chilling, with lots of cleverly plotted twists and turns, and I LOVED the ending. This author is going straight to the top of my to watch list. Absolutely fabulous. I'll be recommending this one to my book club and reader friends for sure.
