Good Girls Lie had a real Gossip Girl meets Cruel Intentions (both of which I love!) kind of feel for me. It takes place on the grounds of The Goode School, a private school for super-rich and elite girls on the path toward only the best, ivy league schools. The school is designed to groom girls to be honest, responsible and dignified young ladies. With its exceptional reputation already on shaky ground after some recent and serious past scandal, the school is thrown into panic mode when a student is found hanging from the front gates. Everyone has their own theories but what really happened at Goode?
Every once in a while, I like to delve back into the YA relm and enjoy a little teenage angst and drama and this definitely had all of that! This was a bit of a slow burn for sure, I feel like it probably could have been about 100 pages shorter, it definitely had moments that it felt like the story was really dragging on. However, with that said, Ellison was so good at dropping little nuggets of mystery or intrigue at the exact right moment when maybe my interest was wavering and it would suck me right back in. The characters were so well developed and Ellison set the scene so well I felt like I was right there in rural Virginia. While the end was mostly satisfying, it gave me lots of closure, I was left wanting a more exciting twist to really wow me. Nothing really shocked me, it was good, don’t get me wrong I just wanted more! I don’t recommend reading this if you plan to send your daughter to an elite all girls boarding school but otherwise, this one is worth a read.
Always ready for a boarding school mystery, this was a bit more twisty than anticipated. It was much less predictable than expected.
This book kept guessing until the very end. I didn't love the characters but I doe feel the storyline was well thought out and fun.
This book was not at all what I expected. This book is full of twists and turns with an ending that I didn’t see coming.
The Goode School is a prestigious prep school known as a Silent Ivy. The boarding school of choice for daughters of the rich and influential, it accepts only the best and the brightest. In a world where appearances are everything, as long as students pretend to follow the rules, no one questions the cruelties of the secret societies or the dubious behavior of the privileged young women.
Ash has moved from England to go to The Goode School. She is recovering from a tragedy and wants nothing more than to have a new beginning. She finds that she is not going to be accepted easily by the girls at school. She tries to stay to herself and just get through school. Before she knows it she is embroiled in a life she never expected. How long can Ash keep her secret from being exposed?
This was a very well written book and I enjoyed it a lot. Without giving to much away I really hated the fate of one of the characters. She grew on me and I wish things ended differently for her.
This book was amazing. Much darker than your average YA, and although I predicted the twist pretty early, it did not take away from the reading experience whatsoever. Beautifully developed characters, with touches of shocking cruelty that kept a touch of u comfortableness throughout. Delicious.
I feel as though some parts could have been condensed, because at times I felt a bit lost. Overall this book was very enjoyable and had some memorable quotes. I am a sucker for private school settings.
A fabulously creepy, Gothic-inspired suspense novel by J.T. Ellison.
It’s obvious from the outset that Ash Carlisle is hiding something. She arrives as a sophomore to Virginia’s hyper-exclusive all-girls boarding school, the Goode School, in the Blue Ridge mountains. She’s clearly favored by the dean, Ford Westhaven, but immediately vulnerable to bullying by her fellow students, particularly senior Becca Curtiss. Ash can hold her own, and as she gradually peels back layers of her past, one wonders how much she’s capable of. But with secret societies, cliques, hazing, academics, and her own conflicted emotions, Ash struggles to adapt to Goode. At the same time, as much as Dean Westhaven is eager to leave Goode for good, she doesn’t want to do so under a cloud of scandal like her mother did. With a student’s mysterious death and threats that her own illicit relationship may be revealed, Ford has difficulty maintaining the facade.
Good Girls Lie is impossible to put down and will keep you in suspense until the very last page. #NetGalley #GoodGirlsLie
JT Ellison did not disappoint! I cannot wait for this book to be published in December so you all can get your hands on it. A British orphan gets sent to an all girls school in America after her parents commit suicide. She’s clearly hiding something and things keep happening to her along the way. The ending was not something I thought was coming!
I had a very hard time reading this one. Seemed slow to me and dragged a lot. Often times very confused as to who was who especially when Alex was added to the plot. Ellison is one of my favorite authors so hard to give a 3 star review but it’s definitely not one of her best titles. *thank you netgalley for the arc
The Goode school only accepts the very best girls. There are so many secrets at the Goode school that it makes reading the book quite a thrilling ride. Ash comes to the Goode school from England as a sophomore and quickly becomes singled out. Becca is head girl and seems to be in charge at the school. Camille is Ash's roommate and isn't friendly to Ash at all. As the secrets are slowly revealed, you can not put the book down! I thoroughly enjoyed this wild ride! I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
I wanted to love this book so much, and I did really like it, right up until the end. There's girls dying all over the place in the midst of college like sorority hazing at an all girls high school, intrigue, the dean sleeping with someone years younger, myths and legends abound, and then the end was just BLAP. Over, done, completely anti climactic. It was abrupt and really did this great plotline a disservice. I'd probably still read it, even knowing that, but it was a really disappointing and frustrating end.
This book is a must read! A high class, female only boarding school, with some nice girls, and some not so nice. Lots of secrets exposed. It kept me guessing until the very end.
In sorry but this book delves into a subject matter that infuriates me...school bullying.
The book could be the best-known the world but all I can see off his subject matter.
I did finish it.and it was a good book but not my cup of tea ,sorry.
Many thanks to Net Galley, Harlequin- Mira and J T Ellison for the chance to review #Good Girls Lie
I have read a couple of books by J T Ellison and her book "Tear Me Apart' is a story that still resonates in my mind. At times, when there are so many thrillers out there, to write something that lingers is brilliant and Tear Me Apart was one such book for me. Good Girls Lie is clearly a winner, there's no doubt about it. An all-girls residential school with murder and mayhem, ghosts and secret tunnels , everything that keeps a reader hooked is there in the story.
The Goode School is special, Girls from wealthy and privileged families join this prestigious institution and keep the torch of sisterhood alive but the reality is sometimes dark and malevolent. There are secret societies and ragging and hazing and torture that leaves some traumatized and others on the brink of suicide. The competition is fierce but encouraged by the faculty to be healthy even though the rules are flaunted and broken by most.
The opening chapter itself leaves one speechless but it was the unexpected ending that threw me off. The big mystery reveal I had already guessed but it didn't spoil the thrill ride for me.
A superb thriller that leaves the reader speechless and wanting more!
Goode School, good grief, this is no Mallory Towers!
When Ash Carlisle is accepted into the Goode School in Virginia, a boarding school for young women of affluent families, she is looking to escape her past. Ash's parents have recently died in tragic circumstances. She has been accepted because of her parents' social standing, financial well-to-do'ness and natural talent as a pianist. Ash's enrolment was arranged prior to her parents' passing due to Ash's strained relationship with her father, and the enrolment process has continued post her parents' deaths.
The Goode School presents a dignified face to the world but there are also accepted norms within the school. Goode girls always succeed. The girls aren't allowed access to mobile phones or electronic media.. There are pecking orders and honor Codes. Tapping to be in the secret societies.
Soon, things start happening at the Goode School. One of the teachers has a fatal allergic reaction and one of Ash's suitemates dies following a suspected suicide. The Goode School is at the centre of a police investigation and it is this kind of scandal the Dean has been trying to protect the school.
Things are definitely not what they seem at the Goode School.
Good Girls Lie has some really strong [and seriously narcissistic] characters. Entitled, rich, and self-indulgent. Unstable, calculating, evil. It's a compelling read, yet I found it a little chaotic in the middle third perhaps indicative of everything happening within the plot ? I also felt the female detective was going to have more of an impact as well. Neither issue detracted from the book for me it was just the feeling I came away with.
No spoilers but loved the last few chapters.
Thank you to JTEllison, HARLEQUIN - MIRA (U.S. and Canada) and Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review..
I will post this review and a little closer to publication on my instagram @aplace_inthesun.
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy for my honest review.
What I loved: I wasn't expecting the ending. I had a lot of it figured out, but the ending got me!
What I liked: While slightly predictable, this was a great book full of good twists.
What I hated: Can't say I hated anything about it really.
Easy to recommend. Could be a very nice YA/Adult crossover for younger readers.
A solid 4 stars.
Another turn-pager from J.T. Ellison.... this took place at an exclusive boarding all-girls high school in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The girls are all from very important families when immersed with a new student from the UK whom doesnt want to share her past things start is get interesting. There are some twists & turns that you dont see coming! Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy for my honest review. Pub date 12/30/19 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the second book I have read by this author, Although I did not like this was as well as the other, I did enjoy this read. It was a bit different that I read, I would definately read more by this author.
Thank you to Netgalley for a free e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
My rating is really 2.5 stars, but I've rounded up.
This book had some bright spots. Good mystery, some twists I didn't see coming.
However, high school was not an appropriate setting for this plot. This really should have been set at a college. I was constantly forgetting that these girls were teenagers. And for a book with so many references to current pop culture, that seemed unrealistic given that the girls were not really allowed access to the outside world.
Too many narrators as well. Dean Westhaven really did not need her own chapters, but if she's going to have them, she deserved more than a throw-away ending. But it really should have been the two main characters as narrators. Kate's chapters were completely unnecessary.
This book is in serious need of editing to make it more concise and the thrills more impactful, or else it should be expanded into a duology or trilogy.
I'm giving it 3 stars because some of my dislike came from not liking YA in general. Those who do like YA may appreciate this book more.
Thanks to #NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read #GoodGirlsLie
This is the first book by J.T. Ellison and I enjoyed. I've read a few of the other reviews and I know a lot didn't like the book nor felt like it was realistic.
But I enjoyed the book. It gave me a story that I got into and couldn't put down. I can understand why some had problems with it. But for the story I think the characters fix in.
