Thursday is known to be a direct woman, but has made certain choices that have silenced her. Though she is defined by her circumstances, she is willing to play her role as a loyal wife until she no longer can. From that point, Thursday begins to piece together all the missing truths and lies.
“It’s all too perfect, I think. When things are that perfect, something is wrong.”
Narrated through Thursday’s perspective, the story unfolds at a steady pace as the routine of her life sets the foundation. However, when Thursday is presented with details about the other wives, her curiosity becomes insatiable leading her down a path she isn’t fully prepared for.
“This is why Seth keeps us apart – so we won’t focus on jealously and each other, but rather on our relationship with him.”
From the start, I had strong feelings about the characters and storyline then I had to recalculate a number of times due to the clever plot and character development. While at the beginning, it seems one way, there are varying factors that progressively erode assumptions.
“We’re all just waiting for someone to stand behind us, aren’t we? Even if it’s just one person, it gives you strength.”
What immediately drew me into Thursday is her vulnerabilities and the brokenness of her spirit. Though she tries to overcome her feelings of inadequacy, she can’t reconcile how she’s come to this place. Her raw emotional state is a powerful catalyst to the decisions she makes. As for Seth, his true colors were evident and I wish I could say more without a spoiler.
The Wives is a page-turning thriller with a layered plot, stimulating prose and challenging characters. This story had me absorbed to the very last page.
Great thriller that keeps you questioning your own sanity or the protagonist's. The protagonist's thoughts got a little jumbled and rambled on for a bit but it was an extremely enjoyable thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat.
This is the story of Thursday, one of multiple wives of Seth. He visits her on Thursday and spends the rest of the week with his other 'wives'. Seth doesn't share anything about his other wives, but Thursday is becoming obsessed with the others. The more you learn, the more you wonder what is real and what is made up.
The Wives was my first book by Tarryn Fisher. I didn’t know what to expect when starting this book, I just knew from the blurb I HAD to read it.
This book was definitely different from anything I have read before. I will say I thought it was on the slower side in the beginning, but the storyline was interesting enough that it kept me turning the pages. By about the 50% mark the story started taking on an even more interesting appeal, because things started to unravel and reveal itself to the reader.
I don’t really think I have the correct words in this review to do this story justice. I would recommend this story to all readers who like a mind bending story and will keep you guessing all the way until the end.
This book is a standalone novel told solely from Thursday’s POV. This is a story that you can read without reading any other books by this author. I thought this was very well executed and the storyline was unique and thought provoking. This story will definitely have you thinking what you would do in this position.
I don’t want to say anymore about the story, because this is a book that needs to unfold for every reader on their own. I would suggest going into this book blind. I think if you read too many reviews or try to find spoilers, it would take away from the enjoyment of this book.
I know that after reading this book, I need to go back and read more of this author’s work. I look forward to her other books and what she her storylines will bring. This was definitely worth the read and the wait (since I have been hearing about this book for what seems like forever ;)) You will want to add this book to your TBR list and make sure you read this as soon as you can!!! Especially if you are looking for that different type of story…..This is IT!!!!
What. The. Heck. No, seriously. What the heck?
I'm exhausted from reading The Wives. It is a great example of why I love Tarryn Fisher's writing. She's so crafty in her delivery. It may start out in a sleepy thriller sort of way, but when things start to go down THEY GO DOWN. I was on edge for the entire second half of the book. Surprises were lurking behind every corner, people! Just when I thought I had finally figured freaking Thursday and the story out, BAM! I was proven wrong again... and again... and again. I want to say I loved every minute of this thriller, but I can't -- only because my stress level was way up there. My nerves are frayed in the best way.
Wow wow wow! This was absolutely amazing! I can’t believe I waited this long to pick up this author. This whole story had me on my toes and it just kept getting better and better. That ending, holy cow.
I think this is the best book I have read all year! INCREDIBLE.
Four bewildered, beguiled stars for Elliott and his three "wives": Thursday, Regina and Hannah. Thursday is our unreliable narrator and she has quite a story to tell. When I imagine a thriller with a polygamous relationship at its heart, this is the type of book that is interesting to read. Reminded me of Ruth Ware and Alice Feeney.
Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
<b>"He comes over on Thursday of every week. That's my day. I'm Thursday."</b>
Would you ever share your husband with not just one, but two other women, having him all to yourself only one day a week? And on top of that, would you be content to know NOTHING about the other two, not even their names? If, by chance, you happened upon some information about one of the others, would you be able to resist looking into it?
This book was one hell of a ride. I couldn't put it down, the twists were fantastic! I had all sorts of different scenarios going on in my head as to what the possible outcome could be. It would have been five stars but I just didn't love <spoiler>that she had made most of it up in her delusional little head. It was well done, I've just read a lot of books with similar outcomes.</spoiler>
I've wanted to read one of Tarryn' Fisher's books for a while now, but just haven't ever managed to get my hands on a copy. I was very excited when I got to read an ARC of the book (thanks NetGalley and Graydon House!) and will make more of an effort to obtain some in the future!
Thursday is the second wife of Seth. He was married to Tuesday, and recently added in Monday. He has three wives, but Thursday is sure that she's the favorite. Seth spends Thursdays with her in her condo. She makes elaborate meals, dresses sexy and gives in to any of his wants.
But one day, Thursday finds a piece of paper with a name and address.....of Monday. She then spirals out, researching Monday and eventually Monday. But...who is the bad guy? Monday? Tuesday? Seth?
This is an insanely fast paced thriller with unreliable characters. The last 20% of this book is INSANE and that make it excellent. Tarryn Fisher is clearly a talented writer and I hope that this is the first of many thrillers to come.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Wow. Just wow. What in the hell did I just read?! Total mind fuck. I didn't see that twist coming. At. All.
Kudos to Tarryn Fisher for holding me captive from start to finish, in one sitting (this is a feat in itself). Kudos for making me so invested in characters I didn't really like, so much so that I couldn't stop devouring all the words. Kudos for leaving my mind whirling with so many questions, with trying to figure out reality from fantasy/truth from deception, even after turning the last page.
Congrats on writing one fucking hell of a book!
Thank you, Tarryn Fisher for reminding me why I love to read.
I dont even know what to say about this book. Every chapter I caught myself telling my daughter about the story and how it had a complete hold on me. I always look for books I cant put down and this one went one step further than that for me, I literally couldn't figure out what the hell was going on so I had to OBSESSIVELY read. I loved the twist and turns and was questioning my own sanity at times. I wasn't sure what was real and what I was making up in my head but this was a THRILLING ride and I hope Tarryn writes more in the genre. I am a huge Stephen King fan and this book gave me the same vibes. There is so much want to rage on and on about but since this book is not out yet I feel I shouldn't but I also don't know if anything that I have already said could be looked at as spoilers so I will hide it as such. But if you are looking for a truly original, intriguing story with a super interesting subject matter that turns into one giant mind F**k this is the book for you. Well done, Tarryn, well done
Rating: 5 stars but if I could give it more I would!
This book had such an interesting premise I just had to get my hands on it. So when I got the email from netgalley saying I was approved, I geeked the freak out!
This book starts off with you learning about Thursday and her husband Seth. You also learn that he has 2 other wives!
Thursday is always wondering about the other two since she knows nothing about them. She doesn't know their names or anything.
Then the book starts to turn. It turns into a mystery about what does she even really know about them, about her husband, about herself even.
This book had a twist and turn every single step of the way. Honestly, I'm still to this moment not sure if what I read was the full story or not! It was that insane, and I loved every minute of it!
I HIGHLY recommend snatching this book the moment you can! Officially my BOOK OF THE YEAR pick!
3.5 stars, rounded. The Wives is exactly what you've been waiting for if you like your suspense stories full of unexpected twists. This story is like driving a treacherous, curvy road where you can't see anything that's coming. It crosses some believability thresholds for me, but overall it's an incredibly entertaining and soapy read.
I really loved this book by Tarryn Fisher. I’ve read many of her books and I love her style. Her writing is so smart and emotive. The Wives was so good. I went into it blind. I didn’t even read the excerpt. It was so fun reading and not having any idea what was going to happen. I loved the characters in this book. Tuesday was so great. I still don’t know how I feel about the husband. I really ended the book slightly confused and I really enjoyed that.
Reading "The Wives" made me want to go back and revisit one of her other titles, "Mud Vein". I prefer the earlier book, but "The Wives" was also incredibly well-written.
NOTHING is what I thought it was in this book. I was pulled in every direction possible, and then just completely gobsmacked once I passed a certain point in the story. My head was spinning even hours after I put the book down.
I don't want to say more so as not to ruin it, but I don't think you'll be disappointed if you give "The Wives" a shot.
This is Fisher's debut in the suspense genre, and it is a good one. I'm not sure I can give a good summary that won't contain spoilers. Here's my best shot: The main character has agreed to an unconventional relationship with her partner, Seth. With her consent, Seth is involved with two other women. The MC and Seth's other partners are kept separate from each other - not even knowing each other's names - until the MC's natural curiosity gets the best of her. As she starts digging for information, she learns that not everything is as it seems.
Fisher has nailed the unreliable narrator. I read a blurb that said the book would give you whiplash until the very end, and I agree that's an apt description. I was certainly guessing and second-guessing until the last few pages. The plot was fast-moving, and my heart started racing in one scene.
My favorite aspect of the novel was the feminist undertone. Although it sometimes became more of an overtone, I liked the way Fisher explored the plight of exploited women without slipping (too much) into weak-and-whining victim territory. Many of the women in this book are misused, and the MC often vocalizes her solidarity with them.
There were a couple incongruities and editing slips, but the novel is generally well-written. A few times I felt the MC's actions required me to suspend reality temporarily, but I wasn't overly bothered by this necessity. A few threads were left dangling, but none that have me scratching my head. I would have liked to see more from the MC's friend, Lauren; I feel like there was unexplored potential there.
Overall, I'd say Fisher's suspense debut hits the right notes. A solid 4-star read.
Tarryn does it again! Loyal longtime fans will not be disappointed and it's a great intro for any new readers. I flew through the pages of this one. Gripping and twisty!
OH MY GOSH.
This book had my mind spinning! The Wives is a tangled mess of psychological thriller + domestic suspense. Just when I thought the whirlwind was over, the wind picked me up again and swirled me all around in "what just happened?!" mode.
Great book for anyone who likes B. A. Paris or Kimberly Belle.
Wow! This is truly what constitutes a psychological thriller! A twisted, perplexing tale with the reader not knowing what to believe. You will be questioning everything as to what is or isn’t real all the way to the end. Who’s telling the truth and who is lying? Is anyone telling the truth and is everyone lying?! A clever, unpredictable story that I couldn’t put down! A tiny bit disappointed in the ending but still highly recommend.
Wow,wow, wow!!! Tarryn Fisher writes such unique books that blow my mind. I never know what direction she’s going to take me on, but it always ends with the question, “What did I just read?!?” (In the BEST way possible!). The Wives dives into a storyline that is instantly captivating and slightly uncomfortable; polygamy. Tarryn makes you feel the main characters needs and willingness that make the situation somewhat understandable. But we soon see her curiosity unravel and it opens doors to even more questions. The twists and turns in The Wives make this book so, so good. I loved this book so much!!
