almost never read thrillers, but when I saw Tarryn Fisher had a new one out and read the synopsis, I knew I had to get my hands on it. This book was a wild ride. If I had to describe it in one word, that word would be unputdownable. I read this in one 4 hour sitting, I seriously couldn’t put it down!
The Wives is told from Thursday’s perspective. Thursday is the second of three wives to her husband, Seth. Seth spends one night a week with Thursday. He spends other nights with his other wives. The thing is, these wives know about one another, but not their real names or who they are.
One day, everything changes for Thursday. She finds out something troubling about Seth’s third wife, and she learns her name. This takes her on a bit of a quest to find out more and more and more.
As I said before, I was addicted to this book. I couldn’t put it down. It was so fast paced and intriguing. I especially loved the first 70% or so. The last 30% felt a little off to me personally (hence the 4 star rating) but I was still pretty darn shocked by the ending. I did not see that coming.
Even though this isn’t my preferred genre, I love being surprised by twists and turns and this one definitely caught me by surprise. I love that it made me think and wonder what was real and really true and what wasn’t. I might have to pick up more psychological thrillers in my future because I enjoyed reading this so much.
Tarryn Fisher always writes the best characters. They’re imperfect, flawed, and sometimes a straight up mess, but I love the way you hate to love and love to hate them. Her writing is brilliant and I found this book highly entertaining and unpredictable.
This story just blew me away. It gets you thinking one way, and then bam! I really can't say anymore. You just have to read it.
Whoa, that was like traveling on a rocky and winding road! Lots of twists and turns in this one and I hesitate to say much more lest I spoil it but I will say be sure to buckle your seatbelt!
Perfect for fans of Alice Feeney's SOMETIMES I LIE, Kimberly Belle's DEAR WIFE, and Greer Hendricks' THE WIFE BETWEEN US.
4.5*
In your wildest imagination could you ever be content knowing your husband had two other wives?
Are you serious?!
You don’t know them, you don’t live together.
But yet there they are… out there somewhere, sharing time with him.
Could you possibly be satisfied with this bizarre relationship?
“You say I'm crazy
'Cause you don't think I know what you've done.
But when you call me baby
I know I'm not the only one”. - Sam Smith
This was a clever, unpredictable psychological thriller that had me guessing what’s actually real all the way to the end.
I’d just love to tell you more about this book. Seriously! But I know you wouldn’t want me to spill the beans! Right? So...🤫
Again...this is one of those thrillers that the less you know going in. the better! Lucky for me I went in completely blind...and grateful for it!
This was my first read by this author but I will definitely be looking for her next release.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin Graydon House Books and Tarryn Fisher for an ARC to read and review.
I wasn’t sure what to believe and while things got a little muddled, i liked this. Interesting story and good pace. Solid four star read.

I liked this book until I didn't. The concept of multiple wives knowing about each other but not living together really intrigued me. I understand Thursday's need to want to know about the others. However, after she starts reaching out to them, crazy things happen and the whole story changes directions. It was at this point that I really struggled to finish.
It is a Tarryn Fisher book so I should have known that things were not as they seemed. She typically writes stories that are a twisty roller-coaster ride. This story is no different and ends completely in a different place than what is expected.
I love domestic psychological thrillers so this one checked all the boxes for me. It starts off a little confusing because the setup is an implausible scenario, but stick with it and it will make sense! Lots of twists and turns that will keep you turning pages!
Imagine your husband has two other wives. You’ve never met the other wives…and then one day, you find a scrap of paper in his pocket….
The synopsis had me interested right away.
What starts out as a story about a polygamist relationship with a twist becomes more and more twisted as the story goes one. It becomes pretty clear right away that this is not a story about “Sister-wives”. The wives aren’t allowed to meet each other. Their husband, Seth, keeps his lives and marriages with each wife separate, not even allowing them to know each other’s’ names.
This is a psychological thriller with so many twists and turns that the reader will be confused about what is real and what is not and will stay that way from about halfway through the book to the last page. While that was a strength in the book, it was also a bit of a weakness, there were certain plot points that just weren’t believable.
Even when you begin to get the feel of the ebb and flow of truth and delusion, the end will blindside you.
A fast and solid read, perfect for a book club choice, a winter read or a rainy weekend. A solid 3.5
Thank You to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Imagine if you had a husband. And he had two other wives, except you knew nothing about them. All that you knew is that you got to see him on Thursdays and they got him the other nights. Would that make you feel insecure? Would you wonder about the other women?
Tarryn Fisher breaks down this hypothetical in The Wives. The story is told from the perspective of the second wife. It’s an interesting place to be, the second of three. And when she first met Seth, she was so swept off his feet that when she found out he had another wife, she told herself it didn’t matter. What’s more, he actually legally divorced his first wife to marry her, so she was able to comfort herself by being the “legal” wife.
Second wife works as a nurse and leads a pretty busy life, and tries to keep herself occupied. Because she only gets her husband one night a week. I’m not sure exactly how the breakdown works, but the other wives do seem to get him more often because they both live in Seattle where he works, while second wife lives down the coast in Oregon.
And it all works pretty well, until the second wife starts to let her mind wander. She starts to wonder who the other women are. She starts to follow them- first online, then in person. And the more she learns, the more she questions who the man is that she married.
This one is definitely worth the read and had some pretty surprising twists and turns. Near the end of the book however, a couple compelling details were put in that were later kind of scooby-dooed out, which was the only reason I didn’t rate it higher.
I definitely recommend this one to fans of domestic thrillers and of course, Sister Wives and Big Love. Special thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin Graydon House for an advanced e-galley in exchange for my honest review. This one releases December 30, 2019. My review will be posted on my blog, Women in Trouble Book Blog on December 3, 2019.
The week has slowly rolled around to your day. It’s Thursday and your husband is home. You greet him by having his dinner warm and his after dinner treat even warmer as you seductively await for the pleasantries of his homecoming to end. He playfully slaps you on the ass and plants a deep rooted kiss on you that would knock any woman to her knees. You can taste his wanting and stress from his week, and you’re the remedy to all that ails him. This is your man and you are his woman and what could be better in this happily wedded bliss? Oh…my bad, did I fail to mention you share your husband with two other women—Monday and Tuesday!
The first wife did not want to become a sister wife, but she was sort of thrown into the role by complete accident. After a tragic incident almost but destroyed the union she shared with Seth, the husband, Seth decided that it was best that they try new things—but who knew those new things would include two other women living in separate parts of town. She always wanted to know what the ‘others’ were like, but Seth kept a tight reign over her. Hell, he controlled his entire harem of wives.
That is, until one day she was doing the laundry and found a note that fell from Seth’s pocket. This note was a normal message offering a reminder to Hannah. Hannah? Say what now? Who the hell was Hannah? Seth’s first wife put two and two together and figured Hannah had to be either Monday or Tuesday. What Seth failed to understand was that he may have had a hold over his wives, or so he was led to believe, but women are mentally stronger and when his first wife found that note and decided to become a private eye, the glue that once held Seth’s wives together, quickly began to fall apart.
The Thursday wife finally makes contact with Hannah and she discovers bruises on her body. Seth was never physically abusive toward her, which baffled her as to why he would be this way with Hannah? And not only did she discover that Hannah was being abused by Seth, but Hannah was carrying Seth’s unborn child. Seeing Hannah’s swollen belly took on a whole new meaning for the original wife. And that, readers, is where this twisted story gets even more complex.
Holy Cow, Batman, when I tell you this story flies in several different directions, that’s exactly what it does! This is one of those stories that bends your mind and brings you back and then bends your mind again. I absolutely loved this story! In fact, I loved this story so much, I read it slowly, which is something I normally don’t do when I love a good book. My reason for taking a couple of weeks to read was because I truly wanted to savor the process Fisher took in mind blowing the reader. Gat Damn she wrote this book!!!!! Yasss, I truly loved it! There is so much that goes on, that I can’t really tell you much more than I did because it would spoil the story. And my readers know I don’t do ‘spoilers’ at this blog!
Fisher did an exception job in laying out the foundation of her story, which is why I didn’t devour the story the way I’d normally do. I wanted to give her all the respect her words deserved because she held my interest for two solid weeks and I couldn’t get enough of these wives. Umm hmm, this was a damn good read by all accounts! If you’re looking for something a little different with a new twist, I highly advise you read this book! Of course, I realize not every reader will agree with my opinion, but I have to say, I fell in love with this whole story line. What an amazing story and read!
The concept of polygamy did not interest me so I was hesitant to pick this one up. But you know, it's classified as a psychological thriller so of course I was intrigued. Just when you think you know where this is headed, it does a 180 and you're scratching your head like "did this really happen"? I was stunned by the ending and never expected that wrapup! I look forward to reading more works by Tarryn Fisher.
I 100% don’t know how I feel about this.
Spoilers ahead I’m sure.
Man-hating. This is what I felt reading this whole book.
Weak heroine. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to like her (I didn’t). She was very naive and annoying. And a doormat. She continued this way through the whole book. There would be short flashes of a strong woman in there but sadly it was short lived.
Mental illness. I’m feeling some kind away about how this was written and I’m pretty sure it’s not positive. At all. Seriously. I don’t think this is quite the way to bring awareness if that was the point.
Was men making us crazy the point to the book? Cause it fits with the man hating theme running throughout.
Anything can happen to us to make us break at any point. Tragic loss being the main one.
I don’t know how I feel about this book. The writing was okay. I wanted to see what happened. But idk. It wasn’t for me. It didn’t “work” for me.
I loved this! There were tons of twists and turns and you didn't know who or what to believe! A great readalike for Gone Girl, Girl in the Window, and Girl on a Train!
I was instantly intrigued by the polygamist story line and dived into the book head first. I definitely thought it was strange how the wife Thursday tells us she only sees her husband 1 to 2 nights a week and couldn’t imagine that situation for myself. She seemed stable and happy until she started to over analyze a receipt for a doctors appointment in her husband, Seth’s, pocket. This leads her down a deep path of wondering who the other wives are, where do they live, what do they look like, who are they etc. She eventually starts incorporating herself into Hannah’s life (one of the other wives) and befriends her! It all goes down hill from there.
This book had me guessing every situation and I thought I had it figured out but I didn’t AT ALL! It was craziness even down to the very last page! It was super twisted and I loved it so much. The more twisted the better,. 5 stars from me!
Whatever this may say about me as a person, I enjoy a book with suspicious ex-wives and unreliable narrators. If you enjoyed The Wife Between Us or The Last Mrs. Parrish Lies She Told then you will likely enjoy The Wives.
It's hard to get a handle on what exactly is happening in this book after about 40% in- with new reveals about our main narrator throwing everything into question. I don't want to say to much for fear of spoiling anything, but I will say that the twists and turns are interesting, even if it doesn't feel as though everything is sorted out in a satisfying way by the end. There's enough in terms of reversals and mystery to make it worth the ride though.
In typical Tarryn fashion, this book was a total mindfuck. Characters you love as much as you hate, villains disguised as heroes and heroes disguised as villains. I LOVED every second of reading this book, and I can't wait for everyone else to experience this twisty psychological thriller.
In true Tarryn Fisher fashion The Wives is a nail biting rollercoaster of emotion. Fisher excels at leaving the reader questioning everything. Deceit is rampant in The Wives.
The story of Thursday, Seth, and his other wives stayed with me long after I finished the book. I found myself drifting off in thought, putting myself in Thursday’s shoes, retracing her steps. Always ending up at the same place. The place of awe and reverent applause for the immense talent it took to weave the blanket of lies and mystery that is The Wives.
Truly one of a kind and unapologetically unhinged The Wives will take you on a ride. Buckle up because Thursday isn’t playing anymore.
Tarryn Fisher always leaves me feeling unsettled after I finish her books. This book is my absolute new favourite she has written. The whole time I was torn between Seth and Thursday. What is real and what is not?! The wives is a book that I could read 100 times and not be sick of it! If you love thrillers this book is for you!!
Another book that absolutely gripped my attention front he beginning and held on until the end. I’m never disappointed when I read Tarryn and The Wives was no different.
The Wives' premise starts off strong: a woman who knows her husband has two other wives finds a piece of information about one of them decides to track her down. And once she does, it raises all sorts of questions about who her husband really is.
I was hoping for a fast paced, burn-down-the-patriarchy thriller, but ultimately the Wives is a book about gaslighting and mental illness. Its conclusion is neither surprising nor satisfying...a real shame.
