Finally, a long waited twist!
Ophelia stops doing things that she’s told to do by others, she finally escapes the life that is no longer hers. It’s such a cool insert, I was waiting for Ophelia to show her personality all thought the second book, but didn’t get much of it. Christelle Dabo is a master of intrigue, with the way second book ended, I was left with so many questions!!! Oh, and one of the first characters to be back is Archibald, what else I could wish for...
Oh yes, to work out whether “God” is bad or good, and work out what that “Other” is all about.
I litteraly can't wait for the full book to be out...
Ophelia spent much of the first two books desperately wanting to return to her home world of Anima. Now that she's back with her family, she's in a deep, dark despair. Thorn's whereabouts are unknown, and he has not contacted her. Ophelia's beloved museum has been gutted. The Doyennes are keeping a close watch on her. And then Archibald, her seemingly frivolous frenemy, appears out of the blue for her.
I really enjoyed the first two volumes and have been chomping at the bit for the third book to be released. What had Ophelia been up to? In the sample I read, the answer to this question appears to be "nothing." We get some promising tidbits— Ophelia has developed claws from her marriage and inadvertently uses them! — and I'm cautiously hopeful this is an early sign of some real character development despite her virtual status on Anima. Archibald's reappearance, accompanied by Ophelia's god-niece, is an exciting beginning. I can't wait to see what happens next, which is a great place to be in after reading a sample.
I have just read the first few chapters (thanks NetGalley and publishers for the free e-ARC sample), but, I am so excited! The writing, the characters, the world building, the story! It is magic! Having read and enjoyed the first two books in the series, I am excited to see where things go next. If the first few chapters are any indication, book 3 will be amazing.
The author does a good job of reminding us what happened in the earlier books without being overly descriptive. If you haven't read books one and two, I would strongly suggest reading them first though.
This is the way the world ends: not with a whimper but a bang! With all due respect to T.S. Eliot, Christelle Dabos offers her readers a deafening third volume they won’t be able to forget.
Her tetralogy The Mirror Visitor is complex and original: a broken world with pieces suspended in the sky, an arranged marriage, shared family powers and never-ending political rivalries. Not to mention two powerful enemies, God and the Other, determined to kill each other without the slightest regard for consequences. And what about the echoes that disrupt all communications?
Ophelia and Thorn have decided to fix the world. Ambitious, considering they have no idea how it was broken in the first place! But they are brave and resourceful, and the wonderful city of Babel is the perfect place to solve the mystery.
Christelle Dabos combines steampunk and international mythologies to create a unique fantasy. Her characters are powerful but not perfect, overwhelmed by guilt and responsibilities. They run from one danger to another, without time to mourn the friends they have lost on the way.
Because their philosophical quest – almost metaphysical sometimes – isn’t without losses and regrets. Despite a beautiful and strong relationship, the two heroes are always exposed. And we wonder if we are really looking for stability or for chaos, and whether the answers have been here from the beginning.
A unique brand of French fantasy!
A thoroughly intriguing start to what promises to be just as excellent a novel as the first two in the series.
I was so excited to see The Memory of Babel available that I had already requested it, downloaded it and started reading it before realizing it was just a sneak preview!
I'm so happy to be back in the world of my favorite ongoing series even if it's just for a moment. The chapters I've read in this preview are incredibly intriguing and carry the same whimsical tone that made me fall in love with the series in the first place. Can't wait for the full story!
I’m disappointed that this was only an excerpt but ecstatic that the full ARC is coming out soon. This excerpt reunited me with some of my all time favorite literary characters. Ophelia, Aunt Rosalind, Archibalde, Fox, Gail and really I adore them all. In the opening pages We are thrown into the action with only the briefest and succinct recap of the previous book’s adventures. Already Ophelia is dealing with her family, loss of Thorne, God and longing for the Pole.
In this short sample from the beginning of The Memory of Babel, Christelle Dabos immediately hooks the reader back into the strange and whimsical world of the Mirror Visitor series. We are dropped into the story over 2 years where we last left Ophelia. Back on Anima, Ophelia is struggling to fit back in with her family. She hasn't heard from Thorn in all this time and hasn't shared what she learned with anyone in her family. Even such a short excerpt from the book, I was immediately sucked back into the world and felt reconnected with all the characters. Can't wait to request the full ARC when it is available later this spring.
