I have been using Jim Trelease's Read-Aloud Handbook and Hey! Listen to This since I was introduced to it by my mentor teacher in the early 1990s. It has been a staple in my classroom since the first year of my teaching career. My original copy was gifted to me in 1992, when I graduated from college and became a certified teacher. That copy is so "well-loved" and dog-eared and rubbed worn. I am putting that piece of memorabilia on my shelf, and replacing my desk copy with this updated version.

More than half of this handbook is actual stories to read aloud. Trelease has great information about read aloud research and methodology included as well.

Jim Trelease's Read-Aloud Handbook is a great resource for parents and educators who aim to teach children a love of reading. The book shares statistics on reading aloud to children of all ages and includes booklists that will appeal to each age group. When I was a younger parent, and again as a newer educator, I frequently consulted older editions of this book. I am glad to see that The Read-Aloud Handbook has been updated to include more recent titles in addition to timeless classics.

Thank you to Penguin books for the eARC of this new edition of The Read Aloud Handbook. I’m a high school teacher and mom of two boys, so I loved all of the reminders & affirmation of the importance of reading aloud. I also so appreciate the book lists- sometimes we get stuck trying to find books that we will all enjoy! This is definitely a book I will recommend to colleagues and fellow parents alike!

The latest edition of Jim Trelease’s Read-Aloud Handbook should be required reading for parents-to-be, parents, caregivers, teachers, and administrators. As a reading teacher for more than 20 years, I greatly appreciate the first half of this book and the way that it explains the importance of reading aloud, beginning before birth and continuing. When I was in college, my language arts methods professor read aloud to us during class, and I enjoyed it greatly, as a 20 year old. We’re never too old for read alouds! The remainder of the book provides a ton of suggested read alouds for a variety of ages. Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Very helpful both for parents and library staff. Great book lists which would be useful for creating displays. A quick and easy read.

JIM TRELEASE'S READ-ALOUD HANDBOOK is now available in its 8th edition, revised and updated by Jim Trelease and Cyndi Giorgis. This title is truly a "classic" work worth consulting by anyone with children younger than 8th grade. Trelease has spent decades advising on children's literature. In 2010, Penguin named THE READ-ALOUD HANDBOOK as one of the 75 most important books it had published in its history. This new edition has chapters about the Importance of Dads and on the Impact of Electronic Media on Reading. Giorgis is currently a professor at Arizona State University where she, too, promotes the importance of reading aloud, especially to younger children.

Jim Trelease’s Read-Aloud Handbook
By Jim Trelease;Cyndi Giorgis
8th edition

I not sure how I have been in education for so many years and this book is now on it’s 8th edition and we haven’t crossed paths but I feel like now is the time in my life that it truly has made the most impact. The book is full of current data (I am a data junky) and long term studies. All of which point to the reasons why we read aloud to children of all ages. It has been found to increase their “vocabulary, create background knowledge, provide a reading role model and instill the desire to read”.
As a children’s librarian, my favorite thing to do is to read with the children that come to the library, this book gives the studies to support the things that many adults do instinctively, read aloud to children. The book also has a collection of book suggestions that is vast, very current and diverse. I was very pleased with the selections offered in the Treasury.

I look forward to reading this again and again. I give this a 5 out of 5 stars!
