Thanks to NetGalley, publisher and author for letting me have an ARC in exchange for my honest review. This author is one of my all time favorites. The story is very interesting and captivating from the beginning. Tess is part of Innocence UK - a group that tries correct wrong convictions for innocent people. Carrie is the wrongly imprisoned woman, convicted of killing her husband's mistress. From the first page both characters are interesting and engaging. Slowly I got to know each character better and this made me become more invested in the story. I really liked the many secrets and revelations that were totally unexpected. I really like this book and I always look forward to Ms. Daly's books.
I huge Thank You to The author, The publisher and Netgalley for providing the e-arc in exchange for a unbiased review of these works
Paula Daly has done it again! what a fantastic read
Tess works for Innocence UK, here she starts working on the case of Carrie, who was convicted of killing her husbands girlfriend. flitting from the present to the past when the crime was committed we slowly uncover the real truth
This story is quite a bit different than what I usually read. The main story is how a representative group works to free people who are imprisoned unjustly. The story builds in phases as Paula Daly takes us through how Carrie comes to be serving a sentence for killing her husband's lover. Then you meet Tess. We follow her through the investigation of Carrie's conviction. We see Tess from several different views, including her trainee. As the story advances, the questions pile up faster than answers can be found. So, while different, the book is a really good mystery/ thriller that has me looking for more Paula Daly books.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Clear My Name by Paula Daly.
Tess is an aggressive advocate for the wrongly accused. Whenever a new case is dismissed, she will fight with all of her strength when she feels like someone has experienced a miscarriage of justice. So when she is introduced to Carrie, who is incarcerated for killing her husband's lover, Tess is interested in getting to the bottom of the case in order to determine whether or not Carrie did do it.
This was a great crime drama that hooks you right at the gate. The characters were complex and diverse, and most people can sympathize with the horror of being wrongly accused. There were a lot of interesting dips and turns that this story took, it will keep you guessing until the end.
Very exciting read that kept me guessing. I loved the main character and all the twists and turns. 5 stars
WOW!!!
This book had my emotions everywhere. What a storyline!!
Paula Daly grabs you until the end.
CLEAR MY NAME
BY PAULA DALY
This is my third novel that I have read by the talented Paula Daly. Her first novel called "WHAT KIND OF MOTHER ARE YOU" was a fabulous debut novel that I thoroughly loved and enjoyed. As I was reading her latest installment, I caught myself comparing this to her debut novel and the premises for both of them are very unique and very interesting in both books. Paula Daly is a writer with a vivid imagination and her writing style helped to propel me along wanting to know how this book was going to play out. I would say that Ms. Daly had lightening strike twice in her ability to craft a successful and effective subject that most people would also find very interesting. Her main protagonist let me down a bit in not following through for the very fibers of her character that I felt didn't quite ring realistic to me. It is only the way this one ended that I did not think it was realistic. If you fight for justice your whole career you don't usually aid and abet the very crime you are trying to exonerate and gain freedom for. It is a great accomplishment for an author to skillfully be able tackle controversial subject matter in each of her very accomplished writing. Each book is it's own and masterfully written. It is not easy to repeat the same multi-layered complex characters and render them to be as realistically possible in that you are so engrossed that you forget that you are reading contemporary fiction.
I would have rated this book higher if the last several pages and the conclusion where synergistically character consistantly the same morals and values that the main character had throughout the novel only to switch to the ending that was in principle not in line with the majority of the book. Ms. Daly set up a protagonist so that the reader in me questions how and why she chose the ending she did. I have thought long and hard about this. I do get it. I do understand what and why she chose the ending to be such a departure for the morally and ethically responsible protagonist to deviate could be to add the shocking twist turn that most readers enjoy and have come to expect. The reader is aware that for the whole book her good and honest protagonist is flawed in her personal life. However in her professional life she fought hard for justice for the innocent and put all of her passions in trying to undo miscarriages of justice. Why would someone who is a champion for the wrongly accused turn around and give instructions in how to break the law and help to cover up a crime that she fought to free the innocents from miscarriages of justice. It went against her belief in only helping those who were truly innocent. How am I to believe that she would help to orchestrate the very principles she fought to make things right for the wrongly accused. Paula Daly lost me when she did what she did at the conclusion.
Paula Daly frankly does not have to adhere to my humble opinion of what, how and why she chose to make a professional break the law. I do understand that in deciding her ending she was trying to redeem the protagonist's demons in her personal life but in her professional life a person who frees the innocent wouldn't aid and abet another crime that she stated many times that she would not continue to fight for Carrie if she thought that Carrie was lying. I really loved this book until I came to the ending and I hope that I have clearly stated what didn't work for me.
I do understand the message and the person who got hurt and murdered was a despicable character. Since when does a professional who prides herself in righting wrongdoing take part in acting in the opposite manner our protagonist was ethically and morally bound in the UK Innocence project? Other than that ending where our protagonist breaks the cardinal rule of doing a complete 180 degree action. I did love the plot and characters and found this subject to be very clever and interesting. I am only being honest which is what I set out to do when reviewing a book. I loved this fresh idea and I know that most readers will be fascinated just like I was. It is my hope that I have not ruined a book for staring what didn't work for me personally. Paula Daly is an excellent writer and I did enjoy most of the book.
Thank you to Net Galley, Paula Daly and Arlantic Publishing for providing me with my ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own and I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me to read and review this very talented author. I would still recommend this book as an almost flawlessly written narrative.
This book was fast paced. Hard to put down. It flowed well and it was very well written. It caught hold of me and had me hooked from the start . I was literally on the edge of my seat reading this book.
If your favoured reading material is a compelling tale with a good sprinkling of duplicity, manipulation, infidelity, obsession, anger, hatred, injustice, violence, and murder, then feel free to read Paula Daly’s latest offering - Clear My Name.
The novel was told from the perspectives of Tess and Carrie. Tess Gilroy, lead investigator for Innocence UK, heads back to her home-town of Morecambe, England where she finds herself investigating the possible wrongful conviction of Carrie Kamara in the killing of her husband’s mistress but also having to confront her own past that’s scattered with secrets and heartbreak.
I was drawn into this novel by Paula Daly’s clever writing and I was never bored but instead, was lured deeper and deeper into this really engrossing tale. The author managed to turn whatever I was thinking completely upside down as I tried to work out whether or not Carrie was being truthful.
Well polished and with some superb twisty moments, I really didn’t know where the story would end up and the solution, when it came, was terrific and hugely satisfying. Clear My Name is a book that is certainly well worth reading.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my own request, from Grove Atlantic via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
3-4 stars. A fast paced, well written book that is easy to get into and enjoy. I think all my fellow domestic drama/thriller lovers will enjoy this book and highly recommend to those people,
Will make sure I let others know to give this book a try!
Thank you NetGalley for this book in exchange for a honest review.
Loved this book! The story flows the characters are fascinating and I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend.
What a great spin on the genre. I felt like this novel had lots of unexpected trails and I did not want to put it down because I had to know what was happening next. I have not read this author before but I truly enjoyed this novel and am excited to read more of her work. Good read for sure!
I am a fan of Paula Daly so I was excited to see Clear My Name on netgalley!
When I got the book I dove right and and didn’t look back.....or do laundry or adult until the last word. That is how good this book was! Paula filled the pages of this book with a dark plot that was a rollercoaster. I was on the edge of my sofa and glued to my kindle late into the wee hours of morning.
I look forward to read more from Paula!!
Great read. The author wrote a story that was interesting and moved at a pace that kept me engaged. The characters were easy to invest in.
I was eager to feast my eyes on Paula Daly’s latest offering after being reminded how much I enjoyed her storytelling in the recent tv adaptation of her Windermere novels (‘Dark Waters’).
Midway through ‘Clear my name’ I was reminded what I love about this authors work - Paula writes so intelligently that her novels command respect and this one definitely fulfilled that brief. Main character, Tess, see’s her personal and professional life intersect in this tale of justice, mystery and intrigue. As she seeks to uncover the truth behind the conviction of Carrie, who is accused of brutally murdering her husbands lover, she finds herself confronted by her past in a pretty major way. I’m a sucker for a twist and wasn’t disappointed! Thanks to Netgalley, publisher and author for a great read!
A gripping and entertaining novel that kept me hooked till the end.
Even if it's a bit slow at times I loved it as it's well written and the plot is well crafted.
I liked the well written cast of characters and the setting.
Recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
This book didn't quite grab me at the start and I thought I might bail. But I had read a positive review that I found interesting and told myself to hang on for a bit. Quite suddenly the book changed in scope; the characters upended my expectations and the legal and research aspects of the book's Innocence Project UK became compelling. It features complex and well-drawn female characters plus a big bonus: it was refreshingly serious in that it took the matter of its crime seriously, and didn't resort to ludicrous twists in the manner of certain thrillers in order to maintain momentum.
Previously, I had read and enjoyed Daly's first two novels, but I had fallen out of touch with her writing. But, when I spotted this one, I was so excited to get reacquainted! I really enjoyed this thriller! The plot takes some surprising turns that I didn't see coming at all! It's engaging from the very start with the Innocence UK project drawing in the reader alongside the personal dramas of all of the characters involved. The pacing moves quickly as it shifts across timelines and perspectives.
Daly nicely weaves together the plot with the deepening characterizations. I can definitely see picking this one up and not being able to set it down again! I know that I certainly would have done that had I cleared my calendar before starting to read it! The ending's high drama comes as a shock and I am definitely looking forward to check out those books of Daly's that I have missed! And I will be looking out for anything new as well!
Carrie has been accused, charged, and imprisoned for the murder of her husbands mistress. She has maintained her innocence the entire time. Now, 4yrs into her sentence, and she may have just caught a break.
In walks Tess Gilroy. She works for a charity called Innocence UK where they try to overturn guilty verdicts on people that have been wrongly accused. The problem is that this case is going to take her back to a past that she has been actively running away from. The more closely she looks into the evidence and the more it becomes apparent that her past is about to collide with the present.
Have you ever watched the ID Channel on TV? Oh man, I am such a sucker for that channel and that is what this book reminded me of. Paula Daly will keep you on your toes as I kept wavering in my idea that Carrie was innocent. Then guilty. Then innocent. Then guilty. I just couldn't tell if she was an unreliable narrator or not which made for a fun reading experience trying to figure it all out.
I adored the character of Tess and her trainee side-kick, Avril. Both woman are flawed but relatable. They were both stronger and smarter than either of them gave themselves credit for and I enjoyed watching their friendship grow from one of disdain to one of respect and admiration.
Paula Daly, you have yet to disappoint me. 4 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and Grove Atlantic for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Tess works for Innocence UK, investigating cases to try to help people who may have been wrongfully convicted. She ends up working on a case where a woman has been accused of killing her husband's lover based on DNA evidence, camera footage, and an eyewitness. It's fairly interesting to see her reexamine some of the evidence.
At the same time, she is training an inexperienced woman to do the same work as the demand for her services increases, and there is an underlying reason she keeps a low profile that is revealed as the novel goes on.
I would say this was okay but that some of the pieces didn't seem necessary while others made the ending too obvious.
