A delightful fun cozy mystery that entertains you until the very end.
Since this is not the first of the series I recommend you start from the beginning.
In Ghost Trippin', we find John Valentine left home for a science conference and never returned, his family chalking it up to the divorced father’s mid-life crisis. But when a body is found on the old family homestead, his daughter Viola must piece together the clues her father left behind. Along for the ride are her witchy Aunt Mimi, her uptight lawyer sister Portia and her sometimes ex-husband Thibault Boudreaux, otherwise known as TB. What they discover on this crazy ghost trip through Texas will be much more than they anticipated.
Fun read.
I started this on #4 but will be going back to the beginning. I love cozy mysteries but this one wasn't just a funny mystery with a great cast (it was all that) but it had more depth than you normally find. It was written very well and flowed so well that I couldn't put it down. Loved it!
I think I should've started at the beginning of the series before reading this, honestly. The story was ok, I was a little confused on the characters relationships with each other. Loved the incorporation of the supernatural/paranormal. I think this would have been more enjoyable had I read the other books first.
I wasn't totally convinced by this book. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood to read it. It just didn't grab me. Disappointed!
This is book 4 in the Viola Valentine Mystery series and can be read as a stand alone. Viola returns home to her family home to put her life together. She and her off/on husband just fought off some major demons and she wants to decide if they should be back together. Both are hurt from the death of their baby girl several years ago. Now Viola finds her father's ghost who wants her help to get some rest. A good story that readers will love if they are into paranormal cozy's. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book is part of a series and I was really a little lost because I hadn’t read any of the previous books. There are things that happened in the previous books that I felt I needed a little more information about. It would have been great to get a little bit of an epilogue or introduction that let you know a little more about what had happened.
That being said the characters are well written. Viola is a psychic who sees people that have died by water. I loved that little aspect. Not just that see was an everyday psychic. She has a descendant of angels for a husband not to mention her whole crazy family. Those characters alone made this a good book. They are the reason I gave it four stars and not less. Like I said it would have been awesome had I read it after the others.
The book was a little confusing and i just couldn't get into it. Viola's relationship with her ex? current? whatever is odd. Lots of fun being made about the South. I just didn't like the character. Ghosts are a good addition.
I get it that the American South is mythologized and adored unthinkingly and also loathed and despised, often for good reasons, but to start off a book set in the South with a joke that references Deliverance and banjos (and, therefore, rape and the idea of unintelligent and violent locals) is just not a good way to get people to like your book. The other stereotypes that follow aren't any better, nor is the continuous judging of Southern art, homes, terrain, and people. This is one in a series, and the presentation of the background material is disjointed and difficult to follow. Throughout the book, the narrator laughs at the names of people, places, and animals; drinks booze with Tylenol, a combination that could easily make her dead, not just someone able to speak to those who are; is ableist and classist; and does things that make no sense. A heavy edit could make this something good, but as it is, I can't recommend it.
Interesting story and mystery. The characters have a lot going on as we learn the back story of relationships that affect the current mystery. The road trip provides the back ground for learning more of the mystery and why the police are involved. The characters are not endearing. But together they create a family. The book was okay, not great, but okay.
I had bought and read the first book in this series, found it to be somewhat enjoyable, and thought I would see how the series continued. I really tried, several times, to “get in to” this book, but I just couldn’t get interested in the story. The main character still seems a bit apathetic, which should be totally understandable due to the loss of her child and further loss during hurricane Katrina, but for the fourth book it did not seem as if Viola had really moved on with her life. I usually enjoy a story about “seeing ghosts” and helping them to resolve their problems, but I just could not connect with this story. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
A good story. A book which, on the surface, is a cozy mystery, has a much deeper undercurrent. Witches, Angels, God and Goddess, all showing the important things in life.
I loved this book.
Fun, quirky cozy mystery that was fun to read. The story flowed smoothly and it was a fast read.
The characters were funny and I was kept guessing until the end.
Ghost Trippin is a cute story in this series and the first I have read. I think I would have been better off to have read the first books in the series, but still a good book. The characters and storyline are good.
I enjoyed this book very much. It’s different from the norm. I like how the ghosts & supernatural are incorporated with the introspective qualities. It keeps it from being to heavy. #GhostTrippin’ #NetGallery
A big thank you to NetGalley and Kobo Writing Life for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of a series, and I think it would read better with an introduction. A lot of things occurred previously which makes this sort of confusing. If you ignore this it can be read as a stand alone. I was confused and not just because this is the first one of the series I have read. The entire thing with her sister Portia was just odd to me. Vi sees ghosts and TB is her ex?? Current?? See what is their relationship? Friends with benefits? Who knows maybe they aren't even sure. Confusing. Anyway I rate this a 3. I read the entire book but not sure I will read others. The whole looking for dad and not waiting for results was just confusing.
