Although I have read many books by this author, I have not read this particular series. I should have started from the beginning, as I always recommend to readers, but the opportunity arose from Netgalley. That being said, this one reads easily as a stand alone.
The Seekers is a show that searches for paranormal phenomena. Keri Wolf has recently joined the crew as she has the gift of being able to see and talk to the dead.
While researching and exploring a supposedly haunted inn well known for being the site of an ax murder in the early 1900s, the crew discover a very recent dead body in the basement.
Former Detective Joe Dunhill shares the same gift as Keri. He is a new member of the FBI's Krewe of Hunters, a member of the team investigating this newest murder victim.
Is history repeating itself? Who is the apparition they both can see?
For my first stroll through Heather Graham's world of paranormal, I found myself quite riveted to the story ... and the characters. I'm definitely going to take my own suggestion and go back and start at the beginning.
Many thanks to the author / Harlequin-Mira / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this mystery / suspense. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Ms Graham can surely write a book that will keep you hooked till the end and make you turn pages as fast as you can.
I read this book in two settings and I loved it.
It's darker than other I read in this series, some parts are perfect for a horror book and I think I could sleep with the lights on.
I loved every minute of it, the fleshed out cast of characters, the dark and bleak setting, the engrossing plot.
I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
It's been a few years since I read a Heather Graham book, and I don't honestly know why I got out of reading her since she's one of my favorite paranoamal authors. But I'm really happy that' I'm getting back into this series and discovering all of the ghostly fun again. And I had no problem jumping back into this series with such a late book, so I'd say it can definitely be read as a standalone.
The story did start off a little slow as all of the characters were introduced, but once we started to really get into the mystery there was tons of intrigue and I was captivated. I loved how the history of the Inn was weaved into the story so well and was made to be really interesting. Sometimes so much history in a book can make me feel like I'm reading a textbook since it's so stiff, but that wasn't the case at all and this author had me dying to find out more.
Overall, I'm certainly going to be going back and reading the books I missed from this series. Ms. Graham never fails to have me enthralled by her stories and it's like reading a true crime novel but with ghosts and just a little hint of romance involved. I can't wait to see what else she'll have in store for the Krewe of Hunters.
I'm going to let you in on a little secret, I haven't read a book in this series for a while. I'm not sure why. Okay, I know why I got out of romantic suspense and some of my favorite authors went with it. It wasn't like I didn't like suspense anymore, it was I just couldn't read it.
Because of that when I was asked if I wanted to review The Seekers my first thought was, no. But I thought about it and decided to give it a try. like I said, I really enjoy Graham's books so it would be a shame to say no.
I am so glad I didn't. The Seekers reminded me why I enjoy her books so much. She writes wonderful characters and I love how they interact with each other. Her writing draws you into the story and takes you to a different place.
The fun part of this story is the ghost part. I love those shows that are looking for ghosts. I watch them late at night than during the night when I use the bathroom I can't look in the mirror for fear of what I'll see.
Sure me with crazy hair but what else?
You'll love Kerri and Joe. Both are wonderful characters. I liked how their relationship developed. You felt like you were moving along with them.
I loved the ghost but wish they had a bigger roll in the story. The set up of the book was slightly slow but it does pick up, once it does the story really moves. It's funny how even with me being behind I jump right in and didn't feel like I was missing something. The Seekers is part of a series but can be read totally on its own. You'll love the ghost and the mystery that's happening right now.
I never tire of these books. This is #28 and it held my interest as the first one did. Interesting storyline, engaging characters. I was hooked from page one.
As always, Heather Graham knocks it out of the park with her new book with the Hunter Krewe. Joe, of course, is in perfect form and the mystery scares and thrills all at the same time. I like the new addition of Keri Wolf, who tries so hard to prove that the Krewe is full of it with these paranormal investigations. These are awesome books that definitely make you keep the light on. Not for the faint of heart!!
**thank you Mira for the opportunity to review this book***
This is book 28 in the Krewe of Hunters series by Heather Graham. Usually, I stay away from most series that are this far along because so much happens in the previous books that I feel a little lost. I didn’t feel that way with this one; it does work well as a standalone. I enjoyed it so much, I may have to go back and start with number one.
I can see why this author is so popular. She is definitely skilled at storytelling. The scene was set in such a fashion that it added to the overall mood of the book. The characters were brought to life in a way that made them seem very real to me, from the way they talked to the tiny details that made them unique. Heather also added information about Nelson Rehmeyer. She must have carefully researched stories of witchcraft in Pennsylvania, because while this is a work of fiction, the story about Rehmeyer is factual.
Did I already say I really enjoyed this story? It’s definitely a five star book!
The Seekers is book 28 in the Krewe series and the first one I've read.
Overall I liked it but it didn't totally thrill me. It had some very interesting twists and turns. Enough to keep it interesting but it didn't really keep me on the edge of my seat so to speak and I found the beginning really slow and the ending a little too rushed. Should have been a little more balanced.
I would definitely read previous books in this series.
Received ARC through NetGalley.
I sure do like the Krewe stories. An actor bought an old inn that has quite a history. Keri is there to study the inn's past. She writes books about old crimes. This inn had a very gruesome murder in it and she is looking through old files to see if they can shed some light on the murders. The actor also called in some "ghost hunters" because there are rumors that the place is haunted. While in the process of filming, an FBI agent turns up dead in the basement. The Krewe is called in to help. Jo has just recently found out that he can see ghosts. He is getting ready to go to the FBI academy, but is helping out as a consultant. There are plenty of suspects and things just get more gruesome. Will they be able to find the murderers before more people are killed?
Having read and loved every single Krewe of Hunters book, I am sad to say this one just didn't do it for me. I am so disappointed. I look forward to each new release in this series and I'm wondering if it was just me or is the Krewe starting to lose the zing?
I mentioned during my review of book #27 in this series that I felt the Krewe had gotten rather large and there really wasn't a lot of participation by previous members in new books. Again, this is true, but that wasn't my issue with this book. I never became invested in any of the characters and a first for me while reading the Krewe series, I couldn't finish. I gave up.
This series is wonderful. Please don't get me wrong. If you like paranormal in the sense of people that see ghosts or can speak to them, this is the series for you! It really is because Heather Graham does a great job setting up each book with ties between the present day and the past incidents. The characters are typically very enjoyable to read and I usually always care about them. Ms. Graham's plots are quick moving with just the right blend of present day investigation balanced out with flashes from the past incidents.
Thank you to the author, publishers and Netgalley for an ARC at my request. All thoughts in this review are my own and freely given.
The Seekers is book 28 in the Krewe Hunters series by Heather Graham. I have never read anything by this author but my dad raves about her so when given the opportunity to read this book I jumped at the chance. Although this is along way into a long series I had absolutely no trouble following the story and the characters. In fact I feel the need to now go back to where it all began and read the series from the start. For me this was a very quick and fun read but not without its drama and gore. I really enjoyed my first Heather Graham read.
The Krewe Hunters are a group of agents which special abilities - they see and feel things that other people don't. After the brutal and ritualistic murder of a female FBI agent who was working on a kidnapping of a teenager, the Hunters are called in for their expertise. The victim was found in the basement of an old haunted house where historical non fiction writer Kerri is working with a group of ghost hunters on a web series. The crime scenes shows similarities with murders for the 1920's in the very same house. A story of paranormal activity, ghosts, murder and even a love story. This book has something for everyone and is definitely worth picking up.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harelquin MIRA US and Canada for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
The Seekers by Heather Graham is part of the Krewe of Hunters series but its the first one I have read and I wasn't confused at all. Basically, there is a group of FBI agents who can see ghosts and they are called out to crime scenes where paranormal activity is suspected.
Keri, our heroine, is a historical nonfiction author who writes about crime. She is well respected and gives a great deal of attention to the research to make her books accurate from all angles. She is called in to work with a team of ghost hunters from a paranormal web show. She doesn't believe in ghosts, but being there gives her access to a very tragic historical site that wants to write about. Needless to say, there are ghosts. When a real person gets murdered while Keri and the "Truth Seekers" are in the house, the FBI Krewe of Hunters sends new recruit Joe.
The murder mystery is really well done! An FBI agent is murdered in a brutal, ritualistic fashion in a house known for a horrific 1926 crime of torture and murder. But, it's not that simple of course. How did an FBI agent looking for a kidnapped girl end up in this house in the middle of nowhere? Why her? Who could have killed her and staged such a gruesome scene when there was a team of people in house? The plot is winding and fascinating for sure. I love true crime books-they are my jam for sure. So, The Seekers appealed to me right away for that aspect; however, this story is really well written. Heather Graham can tell a fabulous story with well developed plot lines.
3.5 stars.
The Seekers kept me turning the pages—and constantly rethinking whom I suspected in the grisly murder of an FBI agent. As usual in a Krewe of Hunters novel, the present-day mystery is tied to events in the past, the hero and heroine can both see ghosts, and their attraction is nearly instantaneous… but this time, said attraction was offset by their initial irritation with each other. Both Keri and Joe are eminently likable, and despite their mutual prickliness, I had no question where things were headed; it was more a matter of when than if. I particularly liked Joe’s respectful, even courteous protectiveness. It isn’t machismo or alpha-male posturing; he treats Keri like an intelligent partner whose strengths and training lie elsewhere.
Sometimes the books in this series are a little too graphic or creepy for me, and this one came close a few times, particularly in the descriptions of what had been done to Agent Castro, and to the inn’s guests in the past. (shudder)
I also had a few reservations when it came to believability. As good a cop as Joe Dunhill is, he hasn’t been through the FBI academy yet, so he’s not an official member of the Krewe; nor is he still on the Savannah police force. (He was a secondary character in The Summoning.) The police and FBI can both be sticklers about turf, jurisdiction, and civilian involvement. The Krewe are a bit more laid back, but local cops and other FBI units might not be be. So I was surprised that Joe wasn’t challenged more often for acting as a full member of the investigation. There were also some logical leaps and assumptions that I’m not sure real agents would make, particularly in drawing parallels between the past and present. (That, too, is typical of this series; I’ve learned to live with it.)
Nonetheless, I enjoyed the suspenseful ride and the just-creepy-enough atmosphere, plowing through The Seekers at top speed to find out “what happens next.” And by the scenes just before the denouement, I had pegged almost all the characters’ guilt or innocence correctly, which is always gratifying. I like books that can keep me guessing, but I also like being able to figure out at least some of the mystery myself. The Seekers delivered on both counts.
Heather Graham's Krewe books never disappoint! You need to be prepared for a bit of ghostly intrigue and some ghoulish behavior. There is some graphic scenes of dead bodies but no in your face violence. Can't wait for the next one! Have preordered this for my store already!
Historical true crime author Keri Wolf has joined the crew of The Seekers, an online show that searches for paranormal phenomena, as they explore the haunted Miller Inn and Tavern in rural Pennsylvania. The inn is known for being the site of an ax murder rampage in 1926. But the crew have only started to set up when they find the butchered body of FBI agent Julie Castro in the basement. Keri is also shocked when she sees a female ghost appearing beside the dead body. Former Savannah detective Joe Dunhill also shares the strange gift of being able to see and talk to the dead. As the newest member of the FBI’s Krewe of Hunters, Joe is on the team investigating the murder and the kidnapping of a 17-year girl from New York.
This is book 28 in the long-running Krewe series but the first book for me. The book was a bit slow to start and I did not really get engaged with the characters or story.
I received an eARC via Netgalley and MIRA with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and provided this review.
Omg this book was so thrilling and scared me so good, that when a firework went off in the night I fell out of my bed. It was hilarious and I’m now the laughing stock in my house! But I’m not one who has ever had a book scare me and I’ve read Stephen King. This was the first Krewe book I’ve read and as a night owl I love to read at night and this one got me good. Heather Graham’s writing just drew me in with all the details of the haunted inn and I felt as though I was right there myself. I was witnessing it with these characters and it scared me and I had to stop reading the book several times cause I was scared and I thought my little apartment was haunted. Lol I am very scared paranormal activity and this book was so well written and so descriptive that it had me so involved and I’m so glad it wasn’t a paperback cause I’d probably bend the pages back as hard as I was grilling my iPad, Keri is a very independent historian who likes to learn about crime scenes and history and never likes to speculate. Joe is a cop who is now working with the FBI Krewe team. Joe has just recently learned that he can see and hear ghosts and is trying to understand what that means to him and how he can help others with this. Before he goes to training he is sent to on this case to help in Pennsylvania Dutch country where a FBI agent is found dead in an old inn. Keri thought she saw a lady in white when she saw the dead agent but is not quite sure cause no one else saw her. There is some sparks between her and Joe but they don’t know what to think about it. Is it the haunted inn or is it more? Can they solve this case before more are killed due to the possible curse? Or is there a murderer among them? This book kept me on the edge and I literally couldn’t read it fast enough. I loved it so much and I am now going to go back and read more of this series, even though it scared me, But who doesn’t love a thrill. I highly recommend this book especially if you love ghosts and crime thrillers,
I have never read any of the Krewe series but I was gifted this so I gave it a try. In my personal opinion it wasn't for me but I know alot of people love this series so I'm probably in the minority. Anyway this is a series that involves an FBI team that hunt down paranormal mysteries and stuff like that. Apparently in this one two of them get sucked into more than they can handle and stuff gets real... real fast. Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin Publishing for my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley, Heather Graham and Harlequin for this ARC.
I read this book without knowing that it was number 28 in the series. No wonder I was confused! It was a good story, but I need to go back and read the other 27.
This book was such a quick, fast-paced read I couldn't put it down--nor did I want to! Certainly for horror and historical fiction fans!
The Seekers – Heather Graham
The FBI’s elite Krewe of Hunters returns in yet another paranormal adventure!
Joe Dunhill, former Savannah Detective, is the newest member of the Krewe of Hunters. After having a bit of unexpected paranormal help in solving his last case, and seeking to put his new talent to use, he is tagging along with agent Dallas Wicker as they investigate their latest case.
Keri Wolf is a writer who researches historical crimes and then documents her findings. She has been invited to witness and document the exploration into an old building in York, Philadelphia where a mass murderer reportedly lived and killed his prey. The historical story includes the death of a young woman at the hands of the innkeeper, and her father, so deranged from grief, then killed him and massacred the other inn inhabitants, with restless ghosts still haunting the Inn. Along with the new owner, Carl Brentwood, and the “Truth Seekers’, a crew of paranormal investigators, they also plan to try to validate the haunting.
Shortly after Keri’s arrival, a woman is found dead in the basement of the old inn, her body splayed out on an altar of sorts, covered in blood. She also sees another figure, a woman in white, staring at the body with tears running down her face… before she disappears. The York County Police investigate, led by the abrasive Detective Catrina Billings. When the body is identified as an FBI agent, the Krewe of Hunters is called in to oversee the investigation.
As Keri, Carl & the Krewe join forces and share information, they seek answers as to why an FBI agent from NY has become the latest victim of violent crime in PA and begin to suspect a link in their cases somehow. Meanwhile a pair of old ghosts recognize their intent to set the past right, and do their best to steer Keri & Joe in the right direction…
Filled with rich history of the area, likeable characters, mystery, paranormal suspense and a touch of romance, this book will hit the spot for paranormal suspense fans everywhere! Great read!!
I was fortunate to receive this book as an Advance Reader Copy from Netgalley, in exchange for an objective review.
