Antique Antics…
A box set of the first three books in The Antiques & Collectables Mystery series. Each an enjoyable and entertaining instalment with a delightful sleuth and an eccentric cast of supporting characters. Molly usually finds the unthinkable under the polished veneer of antiques to sniff out a mystery and solve the case.
This box set includes the first 3 books in the series. This is a value is you are looking to start a new series. The books are well-written cozies. The characters are likable and relatable.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
Ellery Adams is one of my favorite cozy authors. I'm not sure how I'd never heard of this series, but I'm so glad I got around to them. Molly is a terrific protagonist, and the mysteries are fast paced and tons of fun. I'd expect nothing less from Ms. Adams.
What a wonderful start to a new series. Being an avid collection adventurer myself I could not resist.
I have written reviews on each book individually so please check them out as well.
Overall what I like best about this series are the characters and their outlook on life.
I also learned so much while reading. We are given insights and background information on various aspects of the antiques and collectibles world as well as small town life and different media.
Set in the backroads of North Carolina and the world of hand made pottery, the first mystery was a behind the scenes look at both the potters and the big money world of collectors.
The greed and deceit of people who pretend to be proper on the outside, and all their back stabbing dealings just to get bragging rights to a better collection.
It is also a look at marriages that hide secrets.
I enjoyed the friendship between Molly and her friends, coworkers, even her mother.
I was fascinated that the author could find enough relevant pottery quotes to head each chapter!
I was very happy that Molly doing the "right thing" had the result that it did.
The second novel in the adventure of Molly Appleby is just as good as the first!
As a writer for an antique collectibles magazine, Molly is sent on assignments to cover remarkable happenings in the antique and collectibles world. Wherever Molly travels, trouble seems to also make an appearance.
Could one of Molly's new friends be a killer?
I learned a lot, it was fun to go behind the scenes, there is a bit of romance, a lot of deception, and most importantly, I love that Molly always tries to do the right thing, even when the consequences may not always be the best she could hope for.
A Killer Collection is the first in Ellery Adams' Antiques & Collectibles Mysteries series. The book was originally published under Adams pseudonym, J.B. Stanley.
I've read one of Ellery Adams books before: Pies and Prejudice, the first A Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery. I was pretty ambivalent about that one, but I've been looking forward to trying another of her books, so getting a copy of this completely different type of cozy series was perfect.
I really enjoyed A Killer Collection. I think it's probably the first time I've ever had read a cozy (or any book really) which had pottery and potters as a central theme. I did watch The Great Pottery Throw Down on the BBC a couple of years ago, so I knew a few phrases but I still felt like the pottery theme provided a brand new experience for me.
One thing I can say for certain is that I have never, ever read a book where the author has made me feel such a connection to an inanimate piece of pottery. That little ceramic rabbit nearly broke my heart!
While I did really like Molly as a character, I wasn't 100% sold on the romance between her and Matt, and I didn't particularly appreciate her gripping about diets, weight etc.
With cozy mysteries, I always think of the first book as a taster, or as dipping your toe in the water to see if you want to continue with the series. I thought A Killer Collection had an appealing protagonist and some interesting side characters. I really liked the premise of the series and the idea that it's going to focus on antiques and artwork -- something I haven't read or seen a lot of in cozies.
I think I'll definitely continue with the Antiques & Collectibles Mysteries.
I enjoyed a few of Ms. Adams’ Supper Club series and thus jumped at the chance to read the first three in this series.
Overall, I enjoyed this set of three well-written stories. I learned about antiques and collectables. There is a lot of variety. The first book is concerned with southeastern pottery, the second book deals with furniture with hidden compartments and the third discusses walking sticks. I suggest reading the chapter introductions separately from the book itself. I found it all interesting.
Too bad Molly’s mother can’t be more accepting of her daughter – size 14 stature, being single & childless. I believe the world needs to be more accepting of people and their individualism.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. These are the first three books in this series. I am always up for a little bit of mysterious. I got the impression that these are cozy mysteries. They are centered around Molly Appleby who is a report and an amateur sleuth. I enjoyed the series up to this point. I understand that there are 7 books in this series so far.
Ellery Adams has several great cozy series and this one is very enjoyable. This is a boxed set of the first 3 books in the series. A killer collection, A fatal appraisal and A deadly dealer. All three feature Molly and her mother, Clara. They make a good team for solving murders connected to the antique world. There is also Matt for the romance aspect. Very sweet and clean. Always some good info about antiques and tips about collecting. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A Killer Collection
Quirky and I like quirky. This novel read differently than her Books by the Bay and Book Retreat series but I think that is good. It shows the wide range in which Ms. Adams is able to write.
I had very limited knowledge regarding pottery before reading this novel and honestly did not care to but found myself very interested in pottery by the end of the novel.
I'm anxious to learn more about Matt and Molly.
A Fatal Appraisal
"Fewer and fewer Americans possess objects that have a patina, old furniture, grandparents' pots, and pans - the used things, warm with generations of human touch... - Susan Sontag, On Photography
Ellery Adams opens chapter 1 with this quote and I tell you I was blown away. It hit me like a ton of bricks because it is so true. Everyone wants new, new, new and nothing from their parents or grandparents. The thought is, "Just throw it away." I look around my house and I have a lot of hand-me-downs from my parents and grandparents and those items seem to be my favorite things to use. I am currently using a blender and food chopper from my great aunt who bought them new in the early 80s. Every time I get them out I think of her and miss her. I feel as if she is in the kitchen with me. This is what Adams does when she writes, she makes you think and reflect on your life. I have no idea if she is aware she does that but she does.
A Fatal Appraisal is one of her earlier books she originally published under Jennifer Stanley. I really liked it and you can see she has always been a gifted writer. Molly, her main character, in The Antiques and Collectibles series is a gem. She is, what I call, average size, but she thinks she is too heavy and is wanting what most of us what in life, someone to love and share our daily life with. Unfortunately, her current interest gets called away on a family emergency to Ohio and she gets to sent to North Carolina to write an article on an antique and collectible show. Of course, she finds a dead body or two.
I could not put this book down and then when I finished I listened to the audiobook. I wanted to see how well the narrator portrayed the characters and I was impressed. Either way, you read this book I do not think you will be disappointed. I suggest starting with the first book in the series, A Killer Collection but you do not have to.
A Deadly Dealer
The third book to the Antiques and Collectibles series is a great addition. Molly and Matt are moving forward with their relationship. Molly and her mom are still enjoying their time together around the antiques and collectibles.
I enjoy how Ellery Adams keeps you guessing until the killer is revealed. I did not guess who it was and thought to myself, "Wow, how did I miss that?"
Now on to the next one in the series.
This is a delightful and cozy set of three mysteries all centering around antiques. It's an enjoyable and easy read with each book concerning a new mystery. These are stand alone mysteries and it reminds me of the popular British TV Show "Lovejoy" in some respects.
Molly Appleby is the author's protagonist, who is a writer for "Collector's Weekly" and the first novel is titled "A Killer Collection". Molly attends an auction with her mother, who is a collector and works as an agent for an auction house. A prestigious collector is found dead and the police rule it a suicide. Molly has her own suspicions and sets out to solve the murder.
"Fatal Appraisal" has Molly out on assignment to cover a traveling appraisal show called "Hidden Treasures" and once again an appraiser dies suddenly.
"A Deadly Dealer" involves Molly and her mom as they travel to an auction in Nashville on another work assignment. Her mother's long time acquaintance is murdered. Molly throws herself into the thick of things and is determined to solve the murder and help her mom.
Ellery Adams has done a great job of combining murder with antiques and the various unique and colorful characters one might encounter during antiquing and auctions. These are lighthearted mysteries and Ellery Adams make good use of the world of antiques and knows how to make the reader not only enjoy the mystery, but we learn a few things, during the course of the books about the world of antiques.
The Antiques & Collectibles Mysteries Boxed Set is a collection containing the first 3 books of the eponymous cozy series by Ellery Adams. Released 24th April 2019, the three full length novels included are: A Killer Collection , A Fatal Appraisal , and A Deadly Dealer . The collection is available in ebook format.
This will definitely appeal to cozy series lovers. This particular series has a distinctly southern American slant with an amateur sleuth Molly, who's a magazine writer, and her antiques dealer mother going on buying and trading trips, auctions, and other gatherings. There are 7 books at the moment in the series which gives wide range for binge reading. The author is quite prolific with at least 5 other series current or past.
I was somewhat uncomfortable with Molly's mom nagging about grandkids and mentioning Molly's size (14) what felt like constantly. The books are written in 3rd person omniscient and even Molly herself "... wished for the millionth time that she was a slim size six instead of a full-figured size fourteen. Her cheeks grew warm and she felt as though every staff member was staring at her curvy hips, full breasts, and thick legs as she hastened around the cubicles and out to the lobby. The sensation made her long for the comfort of an iced cappuccino and a plate of shortbread cookies". There are a number of archetypal supporting characters (hunky is-he-or-isn't-he boyfriend Matt and flamboyant gay pal Clayton).
The plotting and story arc for all three books are well paced and the characters (if a bit formulaic) are fleshed out and believable. Ms. Adams has a good grasp of the technical aspects of writing. I never found myself yanked out of the story and the dialogue wasn't clunky or cringe-worthy.
The books are well written and the background information concerning regional primitive and folk art and antiques seems accurate and gives the series verisimilitude.
The books are a pleasant diverting read. They'd be perfect for summer reading or a book club selection.
Three - four stars for the individual books, four for the collection.
I really liked each book i this boxed set. The mysteries were good and the characters were well developed and charming. I love boxes sets especially on series where I missed out on reading the first few books. This is a series I will read more of, for sure.
A really entertaining mystery series to read any season and any weather but I especially enjoyed reading about the mysteries, twists and turns in Molly's life as an antiques reporter during a stormy summer weekend.
This is a series that I had originally read when first published so I was glad to see that it had been re-released. Molly is a likeable character that I would love to visit. I also loved learning interesting tidbits regarding antiques.
Nicely written with great mysteries.
Killer Collection
Molly Appleby is a reporter for the local Collectible weekly paper and attends a kiln opening where she sees the highest rated collector of pottery in the area die. She's suspicious the more information and interviews she does.
The book is definitely fun, the characters are chatty and I'm looking forward to another in the future.
A Fatal Appraisal
Molly Appleby, reporter for Collector's Weekly is sent to Richmond to report on the Hidden Treasures TV show being taped at the Museum. She is introduced to the different experts in various areas - furniture, toys, jewelry, books, coins, etc. and as she gets to know them through the interviews she conducts, Molly also learns about the knowledge that each expert garners. Following the experts, Molly sees their personal quirks as well so when Frank (furniture) is exposed to a strange mold and later dies because of an allergic reaction, Molly becomes curious.
When Alexandra (coins) is found murdered in the museum after mentioning that the coins on display there are fakes, Molly delves deeper into the backgrounds of various other experts.
The writing for this cozy was easily presented to the reader, spacing and "quietly" presenting the clues at the same time as taking the reader on a pleasant journey through the antique world. Made me want to visit Richmond and its historical district.
A Deadly Dealer
Molly Appleby, reporter for Collector's Weekly, has been assigned to cover the Heart of Dixie Antique Show in Nashville. Clara, Molly's mother, has come along because as an auctioneer, she loves to appraise antiques. However, Molly and Clara get caught in a spiral of murder revolving around an antique chest and old medical devices. Before they know it they're in danger from the killer themselves.
The story is fun, filled with information regarding antiques and especially medicinal canes and walking sticks.
The background info from he descriptions of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel to the antiques themselves was truly fascinating.
A very well written collection of mysteries. I enjoyed each story. I recommend to fans of mysteries. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my digital arc. This is my unbiased review.
I am a big fan of Ellery Adams and requested this set when it first came up on NetGalley. It took me longer than usual to finish as it was three full length books!
Killer Collection
Molly Appleby is a young writer for Collector’s Weekly, and when the reporter isn’t covering auctions and antique shows all over the South, she’s trying to get her new relationship with a coworker off the ground. When her latest assignment takes her to North Carolina pottery country to cover an exclusive kiln opening, she’s certain the show promises surprising offerings and rare finds. What she doesn’t expect to find is a dead body.
A Fatal Appraisal
Molly Appleby loves her job at Collector’s Weekly covering auctions and estate sales all over the South. When her latest assignment takes her to Richmond, Virginia, to interview the staff of the hit TV show Hidden Treasures, she’s expecting a quick, fun trip. Then Molly finds one of the appraisers murdered and tries to help solve the case.
A Deadly Dealer
Molly Appleby’s career as a reporter for Collector’s Weekly is finally taking off, as is her relationship with coworker Matt Harrison. However, the more time she spends covering Southern antiques and collectibles, the more times she finds herself face-to-face with a new mystery. And when she’s sent to Nashville to cover the famous Heart of Dixie auction, where all the major players in the world of collectibles gather, her hopes of steering clear of foul play are quickly dashed when a renowned and well-respected dealer is found murdered.
Each of these mysteries focuses on a special kind of antique or collectible and the author gives the history of the item at the end of each book.
Another excellent edition to a wonderful series! Full of twists and turns that leaves you wanting more and enjoying each moment until the end when the killer is caught!
An entertaining package filled with Molly and her mom Clara exploits in amateur sleuthing. A wonderful three book package that takes you on a tour of the most amazing antique dealer shows. The storylines are similar but vastly different, giving the books their own identity. The romance between Molly and Matt continues to grow and had a bit of a hiccup in the third book, but Matt refuses to let such bumps in the road stop a good thing. A lovely intriguing set.
I hadn’t realized until I started reading this box set, that I had read two of these books previously. But I did enjoy re reading the ones I had read and reading the other. I always enjoy a box set of books that allows me to go from one book to the next.
If you like mysteries then definitely give this box set a try.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by NetGalley.
