I thought this was a great recent Arthurian tale. A story about no reading in the world? That’s so fascinating!
Friendship and diversity were some of the best parts of this story. I liked Gwen and Arti’s friendship, which was nice, because you don’t see a lot of that in YA. It seems like every character is usually pressured into being a couple these days, so this part of the story was refreshing.
I also like the inclusion of technology and libraries. A lot of Arthurian stories stick to medieval times, but the more modern aspects of this story make it a bit unique from the old tales. The way that the magic was introduced was also fantastic. I love reading magic in fantasy, and magic which doesn’t feel to unrealistic.
The story itself and the wold building was great, but I felt like there were some dialogue and scene issues. Some scenes were too slow or too fast for my taste, but overall the story was good.
3.5 stars out of 5.
**I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange of a review. All opinions are entirely my own.**
This book was pretty good. It read like a middle grade book. It took me a little bit to figure out is was a Sword in the Stone retelling, but with books. It’s was definitely an amazing concept!
I did feel that it could have been written a lot better though. The story itself didn’t seem very organized. The information just seemed very jumbled around.
The work building was very lacking as well. We don’t learn a whole lot about the history of how the society came to be.
The character development was pretty good though. I think the main character definitely became a stronger character. Especially because she did end up succeeding.
(The epilogue though...didn’t seem necessary. Unless there’s another book, we could have done without it)
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with the ARC. I was excited about the premise for this book. Writing a book isn't easy and I'm not an expert reviewer. In my opinion I found the writing to be a little hard for me to get through. Maybe not as fluid as I was hoping. The concept and ideas are all there for sure, just maybe a little more work on execution of those ideas.
I didn’t enjoy this book, found it slow to start and even when I got into it, found it uninteresting and I didn’t want to know what was happening. It’s not constructed well enough to keep you interested, sorry but a no from me
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
I will admit, i did have a hard time starting this book. While it wasn't my favorite and I didn't end up finishing it. It was alright for what it was.
This is definitely an original concept but I think that it could have been executed a little better. The writing is a little sloppy in places and is a bit confusing.
DNF at 4%.
The writing style in this one just didn't work for me. There was a lot of telling and the narrative voice posing questions that are supposed to be character inner monologue.
Might be good for younger readers looking for an adventure story, but it just didn't work for me.
After the first few chapters I started skipping through pages because I found the story boring, it just couldn’t keep my attention and I didn’t like the characters either.
I never finish a book I can’t enjoy even after the first few chapters so I didn’t finish this one. It’s a shame because I found the book’s discription uniques and exciting.
Thanks to NetGalley for my copy.
While this book is well written and an excellent story, I find it is a lower reading level then the type of books I tend to look for and enjoy reading. The premise however, is very interesting and is perfect for fans of books such as The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or The Sword in the Stone. I give it three stars because while I was rather bored with the story I can't tell anyone else to not read it. As I said it is well written and I can imagine many other reads I know enjoying it. I will still probably recommend it to library patrons and friends who have an interest in books like this.
