The action moves offshore in this thirteenth October Daye novel.

The Selkies were created centuries ago, when someone murdered the Luidaeg's children, the Roane. Now the sea witch's promise to restore her children someday has come due--which means destroying the Selkies. And October is bound to help. They and several others head for the Duchy of Ships, neutral territory out in the Pacific Ocean, where the Selkies have been summoned to a Convocation. Politics and murder soon follow.

This series goes from strength to strength. A newcomer could probably get up to speed here, but better to start at the beginning.

Includes a fifty-page bonus novella focussing on Raj, Prince of Cats.

The latest October Daye book has the group traveling to the Duchy of Ships to fulfill the debt owed to the Sea Witch. As usual, things don’t go quite as planned. ARC from NetGalley.

This entry in the October Daye series finds our heroine headed to the Dutchy of Saltmist, having been compelled by the Sea Witch to help her end the race of the Selkies and bring back the Roane. Lots of action and political intrigue, including a murder and a kidnapping, ensue.

I love this series, but I think this is one of the weaker entries. While it's important to give readers new to the series enough information about what happened previously to be able to follow the action, there are long sections of info dump that really interrupt the narrative flow. Toby's best adventures are filled with dread and melancholy, but McGuire fails to get much of a mood going in this book. It's still enjoyable to hang out with Toby and her friends, but the emotional stakes here never seem to quite manifest.

The latest book in the long-running Toby Daye series. This book deals with the Selkies but doesn't really give you much forward momentum on Toby's life. While not a must read, it does have all the pleasures these books offer the long time reader, as well as a nice short story about Raj, the to-be King of Cats.

In the newest adventure of October Daye, the debt between Toby and the Luideag has come due. The Luideag has decided that the time has come to end the Selkies and it will be Toby's task to twist their blood into a permanent solution - turning the Selkies into the Roane, thus resurrecting the Luideag's lost children. So Toby, Tybalt and Quinton are off to the Duchy of Ships - a pirate-like enclave for those between land and sea - to see the task done. But not everyone is happy with the timeline and Toby's heroics will once again get her in trouble as she deals with usurpers, murders and secret plots.

I can't say enough nice things about the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire. There is a rich tapestry of reoccurring characters. They are growing and changing with each new adventure. Toby is truly a heroic figure in all the ways that count - much to the exasperation of her fiancee Tybalt who is also starting to recover from the trauma he endured in The Brightest Fell. I love the evolving relationships in this series. If you are looking for an adventure - dive into The Unkindest Tide. If you want to kow what happened before - start with rosemary and Rue.

In all seriousness, this is, in my opinion, one of the best books in the October Daye series. SO much is tied together from past books, and we finally start to meet the Luidaeg's family! While I'd like to have seen more of Toby and Gillian begin to heal each other, this was just an amazing read! And DONT skip the short story at the end - the PERFECT end to a fantastic book!!

First, thank you so much to NetGalley.com and DAW Books for allowing me access to this ARC.
Second, this review is for Book #13 of a series that isn't close to being done yet. Please keep that in mind if you haven't read Books 1-12. But you should TOTALLY read books 1-12. Now.

The Unkindest Tale is when the Luidaeg FINALLY has her reckoning with the Selkies. These has been a prophecy about a blood worker and the Selkies, but I haven't actually heard or read this prophecy yet, so it must be super vague and basically a rumor by this point.
One of my favorite parts of this book is when everyone shows up at the ship to go to The Duchy of Ships with Toby and the Luidaeg. It was laugh out loud funny as more and more people showed up and explained why they were going.

One issue I have is with Marcia. She walked onto the ship with no reaction to the change from mortal to Summerlands and Toby questioned it...before beginning her vomiting spree. Then it seemed to be forgotten. So what is going on with Marcia? Will this be answered in the future? There were a couple more questions of who she was, but immediately dropped. So now I'm intrigued and I hope I'm not left hanging.

I feel like I can't really tell much more about the book without giving it away. This has been my favorite Toby book so far. We get to see her in all her hero glory and see her reliance on help from others. It's nice that she has finally grown enough as a hero that she allows others to help when necessary. She still feels bad about it, but at least she asks. I like her newly strengthening backbone.

Please, please, please read this series. I am a HUGE urban fantasy fan and this is one of the few that deal with the actual fae. I will be devastated when there are no more books, but since there are several more listed on Goodreads, it'll be a while before I get there.

Another solid entry in the October Daye series! The Unkindest Tide did suffer a little in my view from being about a much-anticipated event involving the Luidaeg and the Selkies -- which kept being put off and didn't really come to fruition until the very end of the book. I wish these books were a little longer so more ground could be covered in one go. Still, considering this is book 13, the plotting is truly phenomenal and I will keep devouring these as fast as they come out.

This is another excellent installment in October's adventures, though this time we've moved to an island in the middle of the ocean. The selkies debt has come due, and as usual with October, things haven't gone quite as planned. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!

Toby Daye returns in the latest installment of this well-written series. Her fiance, Tybalt, is doing much better after the events that occurred 2 books ago, and she is just enjoying life when she is summoned by an ancient Fae relative to fulfill an old promise. Caught up in a tidal wave of political machinations, potential warfare, magic gone awry, and a murder. This is a meaningful addition to this series-things may be quite different going forward in this series.

If you are a fan of the October Daye series, you should read this entry as some previous storylines come to a head. Essentially the whole plot concerns the Luidaeg attempting to make good on an ages old promise to provide justice for her murdered children, the Roane. But nothing ever goes according to script with October around; there are attempted coups to deal with, a new Firstborn is encountered, her daughter is still not thrilled with her, and of course it wouldn't be an October Daye novel without her finding herself repeatedly covered in her own blood.

I'm about halfway through after only two nights of reading. I'll update when I'm finished, but at this point I LOVE finally learning more about the mysterious undersea fae world McGuire has built! This is a series that keeps getting better with each successive book, which is such a rare quality in a series <3

Another awesome October Daye installment (lucky 13!) It went too fast, but this was great start to my Hawaiian vacation.

The Undkindest Tide by Seanan McGuire. McGuire continually brings her A-game. This book feels a little slower to me than her other books in this series but I think its because October gets some forewarning this time of whats about to come. Still loved it.
