This was a wonderfully atmospheric and creepy book by one of my favourite authors. Libby receives a letter from a lawyer on her 25th birthday. The letter is supposed to help Libby discover her birth family as she was adopted as a small child. Instead of answering some of Libby’s questions it brings up more of the mystery as to who Libby is. Libby’s 25th birthday also is a milestone for other people as well. This was a great thriller and the writing was so descriptive you have chills up your spine while reading it. Another great book by Lisa Jewell.

This book was filled with twists and turns. I loved the way Story played out without telling the reader every little detail. It reveled itself at the perfect moment in the book. I didn't see the ending coming.

On her 25th birthday, Libby inherits a mansion in one of London's most desirable neighborhoods. She discovers this through a letter that she has inherited it - 25 years ago she learns that she was found one night in the house with three murder victims and her siblings missing. The more she learns about the house and her family's history, the more sinister it becomes.
The story is told from three points of view and switches between the past and the present. It definitely keeps you reading - more of a slow burn but you turn the pages to find out the mystery of the mansion and the families past. I really enjoyed it and read it in just a couple of days!
Thanks to Lisa Jewell, Atria and NetGalley for the ARC.

At 25 years old, Libby opens a letter to find out the identity of her birth parents--and that she has inherited their abandoned mansion in London. Twenty-five years ago, police were called to the house to find only a baby alive in a crib--and three dead bodies in the kitchen. The four other children were gone. Libby finds herself entangled in the families that lived in the house--and their secrets. Through flashbacks between past and present, as well as from multiple character perspectives, we learn what happened in the house and how the events of the past are still unfolding in the present.

Lisa Jewell has become one of my favorite mystery and thriller writers. She writes smart, solid stories with fully developed characters and without gimmicky twists, and I'm pleased to say that The Family Upstairs follows this pattern. She adds just the right touch of creepiness for a reader like me who is a little sensitive to scary stories. Most intriguing here are the manipulative, dark characters, and the flashbacks told by various characters will keep you guessing about what is true and what is not.

Lisa Jewell has done it again! She is truly a master of suspense with plot twists you never see coming. I couldn't put this book down (sorry kids, you'll have to make your own lunch!) and can't wait to read what she puts out next!

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for a digital copy to review.

This is a fantastic book. Jewell never disappoints. The atmosphere is creepy, and there's never a dull moment. Even the slower sections are interesting. I love how fully realized her characters are. My favorite bits were the sections in the past, and the ending. Highly recommended!

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. It was a little quirky but kept me up reading until the early hours to finish it. A feel good ending too to let me sleep well. The story is about a woman who inherits a large house in Chelsea (expensive area of London) after turning 25. She was adopted as a baby and now sets out to find out about her birth family and the house. She enlists the help of a journalist who is fascinated by the house and its former occupants (3 of whom are now dead). At the same time the story is narrated from the perspective of the children who lived in the house. Lucy who is now living in France and Henry. Henry's narrative is a flashback to the eighties when he grew up in the house. A clever and quirky whodunnit with eccentric characters. Fun read.

It didn't take long into this book to get the feeling there were secrets and I couldn't wait to find out what they were. I finished it in one sitting! The Family Upstairs was one of those books that you couldn't wait to finish but didn't WANT to end at the same time. You're not sure who you can trust and not many things are as they first appear. Full of suspense and surprises and twists you won't see coming.

Last night, I got to interview Lisa and asked her what three words she would use to describe her book and she said, “mysterious, unsettling, and engrossing “. The last word she used was “engrossing” and this is exactly how I would describe this one. ⁣

This book is told from the points of view of Libby, Lucy, and Henry in the past tense and present. Lisa writes various POV’s so expertly. This complex family drama begins with owners of an eight bedroom property in London, in the heart of Chelsea. The Lamb’s are a wealthy couple with two children, Henry and Lucy. After allowing a charismatic stranger named David into their home, their lives completely change. David isn’t as charming as he is made out to be and completely turns their lives upside down. ⁣

Through the book, we see how these three characters start weaving together in a disturbing, chilling series of events. By the end of the book, you are left with a sense that this mystery of what happened at Chelsea mansion might not really be over. ⁣

Lisa Jewell delivers again! I loved the menacing undertone of this novel and how the author makes this a timeless tale that could occur today or in the 1960s.

I have read a couple of books by Lisa Jewell and they always intrigue me. However, on this occasion things were slightly different because the plot and narration were just so confusing, I could not figure out what was happening. You have all these details and all these fragments of past and present. You even have three different POV’s, but what did really happen on Cheyne Walk that day? Who is telling the truth and how is everything connected?
This book kept me reading for hours. I did not finish it yesterday because it was late and I had to be a functioning human being today to teach my classes but I just couldn’t wait any longer for the last part of the story, so yeah, I totally finished it while my students were working in class.
I ‘m not sure about the ending, though…. Everything was a little bit weird. I don’t want to give any spoilers but I did not entirely believe it.
This is a gripping book that is a little bit creepy too but that will make you read until the end. It was just the story I needed between reading romance novels and I will certainly keep reading Jewell’s books.

I really enjoyed the twists and turns of Lisa Jewell's latest thriller. The Family Upstairs is a quick-read psychological thriller that features multiple storylines, a crazy cult, three POV’s, an unreliable narrator, a sociopath, several mysteries, many murders, and much more!

Not my favorite Lisa Jewell. While I always adore her writing, the mystery in this one just fell short for me. I found it slower than her usual and the characters less intriguing. She always astounds with her ability to pull you into the setting.

Now here is a fun and twisted read. The Family Upstairs involves a cult, obsession, love, and misplaced loyalty. This psychological horror mystery starts slowly and continuously builds to an ending that I doubt the reader expects. Each time I thought I understood the big twist, another one reared it’s beautiful and terrifying head. Even now, just reflecting on what I read, it makes me realize just how artfully this story was weaved.

This story is well-paced and places big moments throughout the entire read. It is only until you get to the last page that you realize how it all tied together and why the children did what they did, as well as why the adults reacted as they did. Nobody was ever going to win in this horror story of a family life that was created due to greed, lust, and fear.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an advanced copy to read. All opinions are my own.

There was a lot going on here, especially in the beginning. I have to admit I was a little confused about who was who at the start but then it all came together pretty quickly. This was an engaging, psychological suspense story. I really enjoyed it.

This is a twisted and warped story, all coming together at the end. People who have opinions and thoughts of other people, all wrong, all disguised. There’s a few wolves in sheep’s clothing. A fabulous read. I think that Lisa Jewel has a great way to put onto paper how warped people are, and how good others are, deep into their pschie. It’s a read at one shot book. You won’t want to put it down.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC,

I definitely slept on this book!
It was slow for me in the beginning and I was having a hard time getting into it, but it picked up nicely and was hard to out down.

Lisa Jewell has a particular style of writing that any mystery/thriller fan would enjoy!
