"The perfect couple…or the perfect lie?
A year and a half ago, Gemma met the love of her life, Danny. Since then, their relationship has been like something out of a dream. But one Friday evening, Gemma returns home to find Danny is nowhere to be seen."
This blurb sounds intriguing, doesn't it? I sure was.
But somehow somewhere in between I kind of lost interest. It seemed like the author wanted to write two different books and the merging of the both led to a little hitch-potch. It somehow made it to a little illogical ending. At least according to me.
The story has its entertaining bits and the twists and turns but overall it really didn't work for me.
I don't want to criticise further as I like to focus on the good rather than the bad.
This was a 2.5 read for me which I will bump to 3.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for sending me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Gemma comes home from a business trip to their new home in Bristol to discover that her husband, Danny is missing.
It takes a while but Gemma eventually reports him to the police as a missing person. Unknown to Gemma though, two men, who are scarily similar to Danny have been found murdered recently in Bristol. Is there a serial killer on the loose?
The police soon begin to question Gemma. Something isn’t quite right here. Gemma is saying that Danny has only been missing for a few days – yet nobody has heard from him in weeks. Why haven’t any of their new neighbours ever seen Danny? Why did Danny quit his new job before he had even started and why is there hardly any trace of Danny in the new home?
This really held my interest from the off and I loved the fact that I honestly had no idea of what was going on. Where was Danny? Who is telling the truth? What’s the deal with the weird neighbours?
The ending was disappointing though and the final “twist”, i felt, was not needed and that’s the reason for this only having 3 stars from me.
I would still highly recommend this book though and I look forward to reading more from this author.
Gemma has to pinch herself to make sure her life isn't a dream. She removed the stresses of working for a top newspaper by becoming a freelance journalist, moved from London to Bristol to escape the rat race and to top it all married the man of her dreams. Danny O'Connor is all she ever wanted in a husband even if his family are a bit restrained, cold even. She guesses not even they can have everything.
After spending a night away on assignment at a new spa hotel Gemma returns home rested, relaxed and excited for the future. Something isn't quite right though and as she calls out into the silence of their new home Gemma realises Danny is nowhere to be found. After two very long, difficult days she goes to the police and sets in motion a series of events which will change her life forever.
I really enjoyed this book, Gemma was sympathetically written and her dilemma seemed realistic to me. I liked how her own investigation was so at odds with that of the police but at no time did either appear far fetched. The addition of a serial killer definitely added an original dimension to the storyline but never threatened to take it over and the procedural aspects were frustratingly entertaining.
The author's descriptive imagery was also first rate. I could 'see' the office where the detectives worked and Gemma's home was one I could happily move into. There were also a satisfying amount of red herrings and surprises before the final few chapters definitely increased the tension until the ending which was a a fitting finale to a great book.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well paced psychological mystery. This is definitely worth spending a few winters evenings curled up with.
Although this book didn't pull me in as fast as soon thrillers, I did really enjoy the story and definitely hope this may be the beginning of a series. My first book by Jackie Kabler, but definitely not my last!
I struggled with this book. It was choppy and slow. It felt like half of the book was just filler to add pages. Much of the ramblings of Gemma had any significance to the story itself. I felt disconnected from all of the characters and story. There was no real plot or character development.
A good thriller. Immediate interest with the disappearance of Danny and the murdered men who look like him. The plot offers up a few good twists. Other parts a little more predictable.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’d give this book a solid 3.5 stars. I’m not sure what I was expecting from the title, but I can tell you, the plot of this story was no where near it.
I found myself wanting to know what was coming next and I didn’t guess anything until just when it was revealed. It definitely kept me on my toes. Not to give anything away, but the reason I decided on a solid 3.5 rather than 4 has more to do with how the plot was wrapped up.
If you want an interesting and different psychological thriller, then I’d recommend this.
I feel a little conflicted with this one. On the one hand, it was an interesting plot idea with a fair few twists and well developed characters. But on the other, I saw the ending coming from only about a third of the way into reading, and that's just too soon for me in a book that's meant to be shocking and/or suspenseful.
***I received a free copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Perfect Couple by Jackie Kabler is an interesting suspense novel. Gemma is very happy with her life. She has a wonderful husband, a great job as a freelance journalist, and a new home. Problems arise when she goes away overnight for work and her husband disappears. At first the police are very helpful but then they become skeptical about Gemma's version of the story.
The story alternates between between Gemma and the police detectives. Gemma is in despair about her missing husband and starts to feel desperate as the investigation begins to uncover strange things about her life. She is far from her family and friends in a new town. What happened to her husband, Danny?
I enjoyed this book but I did solve the mystery very early into the story. The story was a 4⭐ star read for me but I had to give it 3⭐ due to predicting the outcome only a few chapters into the book. I do recommend this book and would definitely read more from this author.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Gemma O’Conner is finally living the life she dreamed of: a job she enjoys, a husband she loves and a new home in a new city. When she returns from an overnight trip she expects to spend a quiet evening with Danny but is surprised to find an empty home waiting for her. As the hours pass, Gemma begins to fear the worst and she finds herself as the police’s prime suspect in Danny’s disappearance.
Jackie Kabler’s The Perfect Couple is a well written and enjoyable. This is an easy read for anyone who enjoys mysteries or psychological thrillers.
This was truly a mystery and psychological thriller. This was the first book I have read from this author and I definitely enjoyed it. It was truly a great read with twists and turns along the way. At different points in the book, I thought that it was going one way and then finally the big reveal comes. And what a reveal that was. So if you are a fan of this type of genre of books, I highly recommend it. I never saw the end coming. I might have thought about it towards the end but was truly surprised which is a good thing because it is not enjoyable when you read these types of books that you figure out the end quickly. Back to the book. There were a lot of red herrings thrown out as to Gemma and why didn't anyone ever see her husband in her new apartment. So, there you are wondering is Gemma a suspect in her missing husband and all the other men that look like her husband on a dating site that have been killed. So on top of everything, there is a serial killer out there killing men that look like her husband and her husband is on the dating app. I do not want to go further with my review without giving away any spoilers. I would like to thank net galley and the publisher for the ARC I received for a honest review. Again. It was a great ride.
I'm a bit on the fence with this book. The premise was interesting, but the plot didn't quite hold my attention as I expected. The wife was well developed, but I can't say the same for the detectives. They were a bit lackluster. There were enough twists and turns, and some of them I didn't see coming. The book had a bit of a Gone Girl feel to it, but I preferred that book a bit more.
This book was a surprise to me as I am not sure exactly what I was expecting but gosh the storyline was really very good. I read a lot of crime stories and usually work out who the culprit is very early on but due to the few red herrings thrown in when the reveal came it was something I was not expecting. I thought the police officers involved were very well conceived and all the evidence available and their decisions seemed correct at the time involved. As for the two main characters Gemma and Danny I am still not sure if I would have done anything differently had I been in the same situation as Gemma and honestly do not think I would have done. As for Danny well read the book and decide for yourself. I have to admit though I did see the actual ending coming a mile off but as this does not actually relate to the actual crime it gave nothing away.
I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who has a few spare hours and wants a really good thriller to try and solve. I will look for future books by this author.
Is There Any such Thing....?
Is there any such thing as ‘The Perfect Couple’? Gemma, our protagonist, clearly thought so. In fact, she thought that she was one half of that ‘perfect couple’. Gemma is about to face reality. With red herrings aplenty and an engaging narrative this is an entertaining psychological suspense which may lead the reader down the garden path and back again. Surprising and enjoyable.
Gemma returns home on a Friday evening expecting to find her husband Danny and a romantic dinner waiting for her. Finding no one there and no clues as to where Danny might be, Gemma calls the police. A tale of a serial killer, multiple questions about a marriage, doubts fro Gemma and questions from the police had me up late at night looking for the answers I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend that you run out a grab it if you like good stories and staying up late!
Thank you NetGalley and Harper Impulse and Killer Reads.
Absolutely loved this book! Couldn’t wait to get in bed at night and read! Felt like I was living the story! Can’t wait to read more by this author!!!
This one was alright. I enjoyed the first half more than the second and I wasn’t overly impressed with the ending.
The Perfect Couple was an entertaining book that was full of twists and turns and had me guessing until the very end.
