I sometimes wonder if I am reading too many books at once from the same genre as they sort of blend into each other.
This is a reasonable mystery type read, but at times a little slow for me, but as I have said before I now realise I do enjoy a faster paced read, that just keeps me engaged from start to finish.
Gemma is happily married, they have just moved to a new house in a new city because of her husbands job. Gemma’s life is perfect. She is a freelance journalist which she loves doing, but it occasionally means she has to work away from home. After being away for the weekend for work Danny has promised to welcome her home with a home cooked dinner. But when she gets home there is no home cooked meal, and more importantly no Danny. Where is he?
Time goes by and no word from Danny, Gemma goes through all the emotions, confusion, anger, fear, sadness.
How perfect is their marriage?
Gemma then learns that there is a serial killer on the loose, who is killing men who look like Danny, The story keeps you guessing until the end, which I didn’t guess. With a mix of twists and turns we now come to expect in these stories. There were a few bits left hanging, does this mean there will be a second book?
I would like to thank #netgalley and #OneMoreChapter for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest, fair and unbiased review.
Sufficiently creepy and attention holding. I was shocked by how much I read as quickly as I did. While I’ve read this same premise before I didn’t feel like I was doing a reread and that was refreshing.
A perfect couple's perfect life is suddenly revealed to be fiction. But who is telling the story? Gemma tells the police her husband has disappeared yet the detectives can find no trace of him. When it is found that Gemma's husband looks similar to recent serial killer victims, this disappearing husband story looks even more suspicious. Jackie Kabler does an excellent job of keeping us turning pages to find who the killer is and what happened to the husband.
This was a solid 3.5 - let down only by how far fetched it was at times.
Gemma comes home to find love of her life Danny missing!
After that we are led down quite the proverbial garden path - did Gemma kill him? Did he fall prey to a serial killer? Is she the serial killer? Does he have a secret life? There were so many red herrings I couldn’t keep up!
Annoyingly Gemma is totally clueless and that frustrated me!
Not a bad read, but for me there’s way better out there.
Gemma returns home after working away for a few days and finds that her husband Danny is missing.
She calls the police to report this and finds that they are already investigating the murder of two young men who bear a striking resemblance to Danny.
This is a slow moving psychological thriller.
Thank you Netgalley and Harper Impulse and Killer Reads for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was my kind of thriller even though parts of it are far-fetched. Gemma and Danny appear to be the "perfect couple" although we all know that's probably never the case with a title like that! And do perfect couples even really exist? Secrets, lies, a bungled investigation, a bloody crime scene, a serial killer, a missing person...all the elements that are enjoyable to me in a novel. And I never try to puzzle out how realistic things are as I can suspend disbelief pretty easily. So I was caught up in Gemma' story as her husband disappears mysteriously and there is no evidence he's been seen anywhere that neighbors can identify. Just a fun romp and I'd definitely read more by this author!
I struggled with this one. The premise really intrigued me but I was a bit bored and had to push through with it. It felt like too much going on. Everyone’s suspicious. Can you trust anyone? Is Danny killed? Did his wife do it? Is hhe living a double life? So many questions. Nothing is as it seems. I was left with some unanswered. And The ending was a little far fetched.
Gemma comes home from a business trip expecting to find her husband, Danny, with a romantic dinner. He doesn't turn up that night and nor does he answer his phone. As the following day ticks by Gemma starts to worry that something has happened to him. The the police reveal that two men have been killed, each with a surprising likeness to Danny.
This is a book of many parts, some very good, some not so good and some on the unbelievable side.
As the story unravels it appears that Danny has a whole different life and past of which Gemma was not aware. This in itself it not impossible and throughout history people have led two lives. However as the book progressed the story around Danny became quite unlikely & frankly unbelievable in places. I won't go into more detail so I don't provide spoilers. I just feel that the author got carried away & pushed the boundaries of what the reader is prepared to believe.
As a main character Gemma was okay if a bit of a wet drip in places. I had to admire her loyalty to her husband despite evidence of his double life. The police, however, were frankly quite ridiculous. If our police force are like this then it is no wonder that crimes don't get solved! They ignored evidence, failed to follow up on leads and let a prime suspect escape. I know from films and books that you never let a suspect go to the toilet without watching the door and window!
This had the makings of a good story but it never quite reached its potential. I think a slightly less ambitious plot and more focus on the characters would have improved it.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley.
The Perfect Couple was such a nail-biter! Fans of suspense novels must read this book. I hope they make this book into a movie!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC. Gemma and Danny O’Connor appear to be the perfect couple, happily married, both have good jobs and they move from London to Bristol. Within weeks of moving Danny has disappeared. Why? Gemma reports Danny’s disappearance to the Police who investigate this as well as two recent murders. Are these connected ? I thought the book had likeable, believable characters who are described well. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot, some I guessed, others I didn’t. I did enjoy this book, found it a good, well written and easy read which held my attention throughout. It just didn’t wow me and I thought it was a little predictable in places. 3.5 stars
“Cheesy as it sounds, I thought we were the perfect couple, you know. Well, clearly not.”
Gemma O’Conner has recently moved to Bristol, with her husband Danny O’Conner. Gemma returns from a work trip to find Danny gone. This is surprising to Gemma as they had planned to have a romantic dinner when she returned. After 48 hours, Gemma reports her husband, Danny as missing. The police connect him to two recent murders as he looks just like them. The police begin to think he may be the third victim. As the police begin looking into Danny’s disappearance, they find more and more disturbing secrets… Danny has not been seen by any of their new neighbors, he has not had any withdrawals from his bank account since January and he never started his new job even though he was leaving for work every morning. What is really going on?
This book really drew me in when I started it. Gemma was a likable and relatable character. Suffering from burnout and anxiety through her job and just wanting to be loved. You really feel for her when her husband disappears. However as the book goes on, the author makes you doubt if Gemma is really as innocent as she seems.
Throughout the book, the author leads the readers astray by introducing a lot of red herrings. I was constantly second guessing who I thought the killer was. The author also brought up a lot of red flags about Danny throughout the book, which was obvious to us as a reader, but apparently not to Gemma. I kept wanting to yell at Gemma through the book.
The author did a great job of describing the characters. I was able to get a good picture of each character as I was reading. This helped me connect even more with the characters. I felt so many emotions while reading this book and I think the character descriptions helped so much with this.
I did get a little bored in the middle of the book and I’m sad to admit I almost thought about not finishing. However, I am really glad I did. I didn’t know what was really going on until close to the very end. This book reminded me a lot of “Verity” by Colleen Hoover, which I read last year and loved! Fans of “Verity” would absolutely love reading this book.
Gemma returns from a conference and discovers her husband missing. By Sunday she notifies the police who are working on two murder cases of men who look alike. When Gemma shows them a picture of Danny her husband they notice that he also looks like the two murdered men, so they wonder if he also has been murdered. As the police look into Danny they discover that he never reported for work, that the neighbors had never seen him and that he was on a dating site that the other two men had also been on. This is all news to Gemma who thought they were deeply in love. Gemma can’t find any recent pictures on her phone or copies of emails from Danny even though she knows there have been some. While working on the two murders they now include Danny even though a body hasn’t been found. When the police search their old apartment they discover blood all over the master bedroom which is dated by forensics to be around the end of January when Gemma left for their new home in Bristol. Danny had supposedly stayed another week to finish up some work for his former employer and then joined Gemma. When the police find out that Danny didn’t work an additional week they decide that Gemma must have killed Danny and possibly four men. (Two more men had been killed in London the year before under similar circumstances). Gemma meanwhile has been searching on her own and feels she has discovered Danny posing as Patrick at a local gym but the police disregard her. Gemma is arrested. I won’t tell you the rest of the story because it would ruin the plot. This is a great psychological thriller with good character definition. The antagonist is not readily revealed which makes for a good thriller. Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for an ARC..
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
This is a book about happily(although newly)married couple, Gemma and Danny. They move from London to Bristol and as Danny waits for his new phone from his new job, they lose phone communication while Gemma is away on a trip. All they have is email and his last email seems very normal, so Gemma is surprised when she gets home and the dinner he promised her isn't waiting and in fact, neither is he. There is no sign of Danny at all for days and she has no way of finding him. Finally, she is worried enough to go to the police, who have their own worries about a new case. A case that, oddly enough, involves multiple men who look just like Danny. I won't go any further but let me just tell you that this book was one long roller coaster ride...there were so many twists and turns and unexpected surprises all the way throughout...till the very end. If you like suspense, I would definitely recommend giving this book a try. I was never bored and it was a fairly past paced book, all in all.
Bungling police, a ridiculously naive heroine, and a plot that is so bizarre it beggars belief. The story was very dragged out, and the narrative style made it feel even longer than it actually was. So much so that I ended up skimming most of the second half to get to the big reveal, which was just ludicrous enough to make me glad I'd read that far, even if it was just for the laughs. Not one I'd recommend, and not an author I'd try again.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview The Perfect Couple by Jackie Kabler. The "perfect couple" - Gemma and Danny. They really are - they love each other and fall in love passionately. Then one day, Danny doesn';t some home and Gemma gets so alarmed by his disappearance that she notifies the police.
But the police start to think something else is going on because they don't believe Gemma. On top of that, there is a serial killer on the loose and the victims resemble Danny. But Danny doesn't have much DNA in their apartment or anywhere else in Gemma's life. Soon the police start to suspect that all is not what it appears, and things are not what they seem.
Ok book - quick read - What bothers me are characters that don't see the obvious and this is the case in this novel.
2.5 stars.
“Is she telling them the truth, or are there more secrets and lies in this marriage than meets the eye?”
Ooooh!!! A page turning, knee trembling read! Gemma and husband Danny have just moved to Bristol from London. Danny stayed in London for an extra week to finish up work and so Gemma did the main move. In Bristol the police have two murders on their hands. The spooky thing is that the victims look like they could be brothers or even twins, so similar are their characteristics. When Danny doesn’t arrive home after Gemma has been away on a work assignment for a night she thinks it is work and he is pulling an all nighter as he occasionally does. When he doesn’t arrive back after 3 more days after calling around everywhere she can think of she reports him missing. Danny is also an excellent likeness to the two murdered men. What is going on and where is Danny. This is one of those reads so well written that it slightly unsettles you. To me the mark of a well researched and excellent writer. I felt for Gemma and her situation and not really knowing many people being in a new place. A brilliant captivating read that I didn’t want to put down

Thank you Netgalley, Harper Impulse and Killer Reads, and Jackie Kabler for this Advanced Copy in exchange for an honest review.
Gemma has it all...a new home in a beautiful city, a loving husband, the amazing job and nothing but perfection as far as the future is concerned.
She loves her job as a freelance journalist and at times needs to travel for short bursts of time. When she goes out of town this weekend, her husband Danny promises to welcome her home with a home cooked meal. Wow, she really lucked out finding the perfect husband. She finally finishes her business and after a long trip back, she finds her house .....empty. Where's Danny??
Days and weeks go by without a word from him. Confusion, Fear, Sadness and Anger are all emotions she is feeling. How could he do this to her??
The police aren't much help, there seems to be a serial killer that is killing people that look just like Danny!
Just how angry was Gemma that Danny would disappear like that without as much as goodbye. Angry enough to punish him??
I really liked this book as it kept me interested throughout. I would like to see this as a first book of a series and I was left with questions about the ending.
Is there anything better than reading a book about a 'perfect' couple?! I think not... especially when it is going to be creepy and full of excitement! This is a definite must read and I want to read it again!
This was an excellent novel that I very much enjoyed. Strong.characters and a fascinating storyline make for an exciting read. Highly recommended.
Gemma and Danny are newlyweds who have just moved to the suburbs of London to ready to begin the rest of their lives together. Danny has started a new job in IT Security and Gemma has just come home from a trip having to do with her job as a freelance journalist and is looking forward to the promised dinner with Danny only he's not home. Figuring he must have been hung up at the office she waits, and waits and waits. Danny never shows. Finally she contacts the police to report him missing to discover that he matches the physical description of two men recently murdered nearby. Has Danny been murdered as well?
I really liked the premise of the book and I really like the start of the book and then it sort of bogged down. I was not impressed with the local police who weren't very bright and were willing to disregard glaring issues in order to blame Gemma. Without giving away the plot I'll just say that the confession when it comes was pretty ludicrous as well with glaring issues. But did read the entire story so it was okay.
Many thanks to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and #NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.
