9-year-old Josh Lipshaw loves ice cream and wonders why ice cream trucks aren't ever seen in his town. He asks his mum, who helps him to find out that it his been illegal to sell anything on the streets since 1954 - including ice creams!
The book goes on to tell the true story of how Josh campaigned, petitioned and spoke up for those in his town until the law was changed.
Written by his mother, this colourful picture book explains the whole process of the change in the law, started and led by a 9 year old boy. She put together a scrapbook, which was used to tell this story, explaining what he did instead of "screaming for ice cream"
This book shows that even the youngest voices can have the power to make a difference and shows what people can do if they put their mind to it. It also introduces the process for campaigning, lobbying and petitioning (in America) using a subject that I'm sure will engage any young reader with a sweet tooth!
This is the story about a young boy named Josh who campaigned to bring ice cream trucks to his town. I can’t even believe that in 2001 (when this took place) this town had an outdated law that would not allow ice cream trucks.
I applaud Josh’s determination and patience as he went through the civic process to change a law he believed was outdated.
This book was interesting and fun to read. I learned a lot and the glossary of definitions in the back was helpful in explaining some of the words.
I can honestly say I thought the process for this would have been simpler, and I learned something new.
This book is a wonderful example of how children can become civically engaged! Written by the young boy’s mother, readers will follow along as the boy petitions for ice cream trucks, researched, and attends public meetings to fight for ice cream trucks in his neighborhood. Young readers will be inspired to make changes in their own communities. A great tool for teachers to use as well for opinion piece writing.
This is the true story of Josh and his campaign in his town to allow Ice Cream Truck Vendors on his street. Josh loved Ice Cream. When he went to his brother's baseball game they always had ice cream trucks there. Josh asked his Mom why they did not have any on their street. Mom wanting him to research on his own told him to call the town office and see why not. Josh found that there was a law years ago that banned ice cream trucks in his town. Josh wanted to change that law and through going through the process of petitions, going before the town council, giving a speech and learning how to do all this he did it on his own. He waited and waited for a response and when it came he was happy with the exception of one thing. So started the process again. It is a great story to show children how things can be done with patience and that they can make changes in the world. I like that in the back of the book it has a glossary of legal terms. It is a wonderful illustrated book of an event that actually happened written by his Mom and a wonderful gift for him to cherish. I recommend this book for 6+.
This is the true story of a cool kid, Josh Lipshaw, who felt it was time the ice cream vans came to town, at least to West Bloomfield in Michigan, as that was where he lived.
There were no Mr. Softies and Mr. Whippies in West Bloomfield because a law from the 50s banned vendors to sell their goods on the streets.
The picture book tells the story how Josh, with a little help from his mum, went out to challenge and change what was called the peddler law.
The illustrations here are a sweet treat, cheerful and with endless details to discover, they are the true cherry on top and very beautiful and enhance the story perfectly.
Look out for all the space stuff in Josh's room, there's a reason for the rocket posters on his wall, you will see what I mean at the end of the book, where you can read, what Josh does nowadays.
The story itself comes with a lot of complicated words, such a petition, but interestingly it's told in a way, the young ones actually understand very well what Josh did and there's also a very helpful glossary at the end of the book.
In fact, this is much more than your fair share of chocolate crunch, because you get a good basic glimpse at politics and how and why laws exist. This small book is quite big, because it also encourages every reader, young or old, to challenge regulations and laws, if they feel an improvement is necessary. Sure, here we have the USA way of dealing with amendments etc., but at least in every democracy, the path to try and change laws is quite similar.
Now, did Josh win?
Why not sit down with a scoop (or two) of your favourite ice cream and enjoy this lovely and cheerful story of a cool kid who had all the adults in the town hall breaking into a cold sweat over his "I scream for icecream".
This is a brilliant yet short children’s picture book that has an even bigger message: One person can make a difference- even kids! Ice Cream also shows how important it is to stand up for what you believe in.
Josh Lipshaw is just nine years old and he sees the need for ice cream trucks in his town during the summer. After all, other towns have ice cream trucks! He goes campaigning for ice cream trucks and even speaks at the town hall giving his reasons. And guess what: He succeeds!
This story is based off the true incident of Josh Lipshaw and this picture book was written by his mother. This occurred from July 2001- April 2002. Ice Cream shows children how drive and determination help to accomplish something, no matter how big or small. This feel good story had me laughing at the end. This children’s picture book with definitely help kids feel good about themselves and show how important that they are.
There is also a glossary of terms at the end of the story book for the ‘bigger words’ that young children may not understand. The pictures are wonderful and definitely add to the story. This would be a good book for those in the ages of 6 and up.
Special thanks to Warren Publishing me for granting me a copy to read via Netgalley. It was a pleasure to read and review!
This true inspirational story is about Josh, a 9 year old boy, from West Bloomfield, Michigan. He observes during the summer months that in his neighbourhood there are no ice cream trucks. That is truly unfair to the kids. They are missing out on a wonderful childhood experience. With guidance from his mother he takes it upon himself to find out why.
After making an initial contact by phone he goes to his local government and cites his grievance. They work with Josh to change an old outdated law that prohibits ice cream trucks from entering his town. The law has been in effect since 1954. Oh my that's terrible!
Josh never complains or screams but with grace and determination he goes through the judicial process that is necessary and sees very positive results. He never shies away from the hard work of petitioning door-to-door, making a speech when called upon, being diligent to attend the scheduled meetings and always being polite and patient no matter how long things take to work through the system. He learns first hand how his government works, yes, even for a boy who is only nine years old.
The illustrations enrich the text and are full of emotion and heart. The book encourages positive action and tells young readers that by following proper procedures, without complaining and screaming, great things are possible and change can become a reality. The book is both educational and heartwarming and I am sure all the kids of West Bloomfield and their parents will forever be grateful to Josh Lipshaw for his courageous crusade to have ice cream trucks legalized and back in his neighbourhood. Here's the scoop... hot summers and cold ice cream are just meant to be served up together. Don't you agree?
I campaigned for Ice Cream is a fabulous children's book actually written by the protagonist's Mum! This is indeed a true story and we can easily understand why Suzanne is proud of Josh and why she decided to tell his extraordinary story! It is entertaining, empowering (especially for young children because it shows that if they make the effort, everything is possible, even changing laws!), engaging and it is extremely interesting. I also loved the personal note and the glossary at the end of the book.
Thank you so much for this rewarding book!
I highly recommend it!
As I an adult, I've beccame more appreciative of children book with a message! This one was very well written, lovely ilustrations and a powerful message!
Nice introduction to politics
I want to thank #NetGalley for a copy of #ICampaignedForIceCream to review. This book was super cute and I loved that it told a true story. This will be a perfect picture book to show my students (5th graders). This book is a great example of how kids can make a difference in their towns. Kids have all sorts of ideas and learning the best way to get their ideas heard is great. The fact that the book shows all the steps that had to be taken and the length of time it takes to make a change will allow kids to see that change takes time. I can't wait to use this book in my classroom.
This is a fab story about how you can achieve anything no matter age if you believe in yourself and never give up! The illustrations in this book are beautiful and I came away from this book with a smile on my face and wanted to share this story with many others.
This is an interesting book about a boy's quest to bring ice cream trucks to his town.
Now, I can't say I'm entirely on board. I hate ice cream trucks and their noise. They're smelly, price-gouging, and obnoxious. Who wants an earworm to go with their ice cream? Not me.
But, as an introduction to the civic process for kids, the book works quite well. The steps Josh had to take to bring his dream to fruition are clearly laid out in the narrative.
I'm not a fan of the repetition in the text, and the illustrations, while cute, are just okay for me. I think the real value in this book is in teaching kids how they can make change in their own communities. There are plenty of outdated (and, quite frankly, ridiculous) laws out there just waiting to be repealed; perhaps this book might inspire kids to get working on some of those.
What a fine book written by a Mum who encouraged her son to campaign to change a local by law. She must be so proud of his efforts and this short account depicts his ingenuity and efforts to canvass support and state his case before a local authority meeting. No doubt he may be a little embarrassed but equally proud of his Mum’s ability to write such a clever, witty and engaging book.
With the desire to encourage all young people to speak out and tackle issues they believe in.
Josh loved watching his brother play sports. During a hot afternoon relief was sought when an ice cream van stopped and he could have his favourite choc ice.
A simple question. Why don’t ice cream vans stop in our neighbourhood led him with his Mum to investigate and correct a social injust.......ice.
The book is full of clever plays in words and is a delightful read of determination and effort.
Beautifully illustrated it is a real life story to make young people more aware of their influence and that many rules and by-laws are as old as the cranky adults that enforce them.
I liked the story behind this book and it was great to be able to see what a nine year old can achieve with a little help from their friends and family. The story was easy to follow and I liked the images. It is four stars from me for this one - highly recommended!
I campaigned for Ice Cream is short and sweet. The story of Josh Lipshaw campaigning for the change in a local by-line at nine years old is a remarkable commentary on what one person can really do. The illustrations were relevant to the story and eye-catching; perfect for young children. The story itself had a strong, positive message that is emphasized by the revelation that the story is true.
This is a definite must-have and a must read, especially in American lower grade classrooms.
Great storybook! Excellent for older kids. It shows them in a simple, storyline format the process of getting laws to change in their communities. I didn't even realized how lengthy the process can be. Enjoyed it. Glad the boy gets the ice cream trucks to come to his neighborhood
